Title: Wrap and strap with fiberglass insulation
Post by: antleo on October 24, 2017, 10:23:03 PM
Hey everyone, first off this is my first post, I've been doing small timber framing projects.. More just making joints in scrap pieces. This forum is a wealth of knowledge and I love it!! Thanks to all who contribute to it.

On to the question, this may be a stupid question, but the wrap and strap method of putting a skin and insulation on a house, what prevents it from being done with fiberglass or denim insulation? Does it need the support of the foam? Fiberglass seems to give a higher r value then similar foam. There is probably a very good reason for it, but my understanding is that you have your inner face(normally like a tongue and groove board), your insulation, then some "straps" across it to hold it in to place, I assume these are affixed into the ends by whatever means, then the outside shell is put on. Is this correct?

Welcome to the Forestry Forum antleo!!  The wrap and strap method would not work well with fiberglass or denim since you would be compressing these materials.  Compressed fiberglass looses most of it's R-value.  Also closed cell foam has the highest R value per inch of any conventional insulation.  Some Timber Frame structures that are wrapped in SIPs (Structural Insulated Panel) are designed with the panel providing some of the support,  but wrap and strap or a simple IP (insulated panel) are designed for the frame to provide or carry the load of the building.  There are exceptions but I'm trying to speak directly to your question.  Do a google and search this forum on Larson Truss - that would be a good way to use fiberglass or denim IMO.
