Title: Felling question
Post by: Tony on September 05, 2017, 10:14:21 PM
I've  noticed on some felling vids, after the notch is cut there is a vertical cut/slice on each side, what is the purpose of this cut??? ??? ??? ???

                                                Thanks, 8) 8) 8)

Are you referring to de-butressing cuts?

They make this marks on each side so it's easier to see where the back cut has to stop, so you won't cut through the hinge wood

It's also to prevent fiber pull to the side of the hinge which can steer the tree after the hinge closes/breaks.  Sometimes this pull is intentional to cause swing, but when you're stuck to the tree at heights with a lanyard, this fiber pull can suck you into the tree with very bad results.  In climbers lingo it is sometimes referred to as "snipping the ears".
