Title: stroke processor ctl head
Post by: timbco68 on September 02, 2017, 09:57:08 PM
Anybody out there use an arbor 400 stroke head? I can sell a quite a bit of red pine poles & posts and I was looking for an easier way than picking through them at the slasher. I know of one at a dealer for 15k with less than 100 hrs on it. they look pathetically slow on utube but they don't tear up the tree like feed rollers can. This would be a big plus on the quality side when the treating plant buys them. I work alone so I don't know if it is too slow to get anything done. Any thoughts?

Sort of depends on what other machines you have in your logging system and how well any additional. machine you purchase fits with the existing machines.
Do you ever go to the post yard to see how much processor damage they take as acceptable?
There are lower damage feed rollers for the processing heads. e.g rubber,

Are there any studies for the trees in your area for what causes less damage?

Even the arbro 400 knife takes off a fair bit bark in this video.

I've got a 130 New Holland excavator with a wore out roller head to put it on. Most roller heads take so much oil flow it's hard to find a head that my machine can handle.

H

How good are your NH / Kobelco or industrial hydraulic people? There are usually ways of getting a bit more out of the excavator hydraulics if it is only shifting trees rather than digging rock. How rebuildable/ overhaul worthy is your current roller head? (get the arbro to use while you overhaul the old roller head - to keep as back up or sell etc)
Compare the Arbro with the Kesla stroke machines.

I think the Lake States Forestry Expo is in Michigan this week . I hate to take the time off work ,but I might have to drive over and check out some options. You can learn so much by talking to a mechanic there rather than a salesman. Most of the time they will give you a pretty accurate perspective.

The first thing you have to consider with an excavator being converted to a forestry head is oil cooling. Does the excavator have enough oil cooling and for most excavators the answer is no.

Yeah , that is something I didn't think of. The minute you add more pump ,the hyd system wasn't designed to cool the extra flow even if the engine hp can handle it.
