Hi all. Clint here working in Princeton Bc. We got a burner ripping. 4000 plus acres (2000) hectares. 4 skidders on with water tanks. Keeps jumping gaurd. 150 plus fires burning in the province now. 330 000 hectares burned. close to 700 000 acres . homes and airports gone up north. its on youyube. ill keep ya in the loop. nite .
Stay safe!
I enjoyed fire school as a student and worked several fires but dry high altitude conifer fires are their own special animal. Ironic since the SW of the US had such a good snowpack last year.
Hope you get it contained. Curious if the BC agencies do much controlled burning?
Clint, ya wanna try keeping all that smoke contained? ;D We are near Armstrong, I can't see across the valley this morning and the air stinks. We just got through dealing with flooding from high snow pack and a sudden melt, now this.
The fires are racing through grasslands and stands of Ponderosa pine, the crews are really struggling to keep up and contain them. The weather isn't cooperating either, hot and dry for the next few weeks.
Good luck with all sounds like it's going to be a bad year there again. Was about to travel down and help in the Kamloops when that area was burning.Watched a sawmill and all its inventory burn about 12mmmf of inventory. Answered good luck again
Those are some tall flames.

Sorry to hear about the fires.
Still burning into August.

We don't see any improvement anytime soon, hot and dry for at least another two weeks. Lumber prices are shooting up in anticipation of a soft wood shortage as mills are shut down and merchantable timber is lost. On a side note, some lowballs stole a fire pump and 1,000 feet of hose from a staging area. >:(
It's unfortunate but at least from this we're seeing more discussion about using harvest and planned burning to help with removing the largest risk fuel. We (Canada & USA) went away from that some years ago and it seems like the fire season gets worse and worse each year. SK's bad year was a couple of years ago now, but it was getting pretty bad. BC has a lot of population in all those park like settings where we're more likely to have RV's or cabins in those settings. Not bothering Mom in Abbotsford other than the smoke. You all take care in BC, we wanna visit there again.
A controlled burn got away on the crew last week, you should have heard the howling. Apparently some think that is adding to the problem but often it is the only way a large enough perimeter can be created especially in steep terrain.
I read about that. My thought was that there's more to the story but I don't think any reporters want to dig and find out. Any backburn can get a little hairy but usually don't. And like you say, sometimes when fighting a large wild fire that is very destructive you need a little wild back at it. I'm not experienced so I shouldn't say much.
Hindsight is always 20/20.

My son lives in the North Okonagon and he said the fires are out or there is just a few very few little ones.
Hard to believe this picture is from October first.
Active fire list.

how big is a hector there is one that burnt 287k+ hectors of land
1 hectare=2.47 acres, that is a LOT of trees. Much was pine beetle kill but it will be many years before our forests recover, a huge amount of merchantable timber was lost. Mills have scaled back or shut down completely due to lack of supply in spite of the current price of over $400/ thousand. A predicted mild winter won't help the loggers either.
