Title: A Southern Blizzard
Post by: Magicman on January 06, 2017, 07:07:43 PM
Yes Blizzard.  It is a bone chilling 29° here and I just went out and built myself

A Snowman.  OK, it is more of a Sleetman, but it is still ice.   :o

Hope it's all gone by high noon.
Going to be on the cold side here. But it's that time of year. Have to have the cold to get to the warmer temps.

Western NC is getting 3 or 4 inches tonight. Got the scrape setup and ready to go in the am.
Its a mile of dirt road to get to the state road. To much fun...

It snowed in Texas a couple of times when I lived there. Funniest thing ever was watching Texans try to drive on snow. No clue.

There was a headline on Google News this morning "Charlotte Blizzard Fizzles."  Looking out my window the headline says it all.

Clear blue sky and 19° here this morning and not forecast to get above freezing.  I'll only go out to get another stick of firewood.   fire_smiley

The forecast shows 50°'s at night and close to 70° throughout the coming week.  Now that is better for sure.   :)

Same here, only problem is, the firewood is across the road in the barn.  >:(  I get all bundled up and go get a wheelbarrow load. That's enough for maybe 24 hours. ::)

Dave, what happened to the roof of your wood boiler?  If I had one that looked like that it would be from me trying to get one more log "close" to the boiler with the excavator...  Not that I've ever done something like that  :-\

Went to start the NH785 this morning and no start.  Was plugged in all night.  Got down to 2 degrees.  Did a little looky and saw that the cord wasn't plugged into the wall receptacle.  Called and reminded my son that electrons won't flow through an air gap except under extreme voltage.  Plugged in loader and put an external heater on also.  2 hours later, still wouldn't start.  Son comes by to cut firewood and says loader would start just fine if you plug the solenoid wire back up.  Started up just fine.
About that time the first of 4 customers came by to pick up their orders.  Everyone was loaded, pockets full of money and back to the house to rest before moving logs and lumber at a balmy 12 degrees.

Snowstorm, we've got a little lake on the North side of town with some converted cottage's that people live in year round. It's all dirt and a fun little hill down to nto it.  We call it HE- let's call it Heck's Kitchen.  The road agent loves to send me and my little 3/4ton to plow that!  More than once I've finished the offshoots and had to wait for a big truck with sand to get back out!  At least the plowing was done!  Ah, sleet and dirt, so much fun together...

I guess that we need studded shoes.  A former governor walking his dog fell and has a concussion.  A friend going to the mailbox fell and broke his collarbone and a rib.  Both are in the hospital.  I didn't slip or fall, but this sleet/ice is slippery.   :o

We will not have church services tomorrow, and probably no school Monday.  Us folks here in the South know what to do with weather.....nothing.   :D

11 degrees tonight, so of course I had four does (Goats) drop kids over the last two days.  Now I'm scrambling to keep the little buggers warm until later this week, when it should be back up to 50 during the day!  Next year the buck is gonna be on lock down during the July-Oct. months for sure!  He knows when the girls are ready, and will find a way to break/jump/push a fence down, when the time is right!  Right now, I'm just wondering how an old buck's meat would taste on a snowy day....  ;D ;D

-10C which works out to around 12F and no wind which is pretty typical for this area. A bit of snow is predicted but nothing to get excited about. We watched some news footage of the Carolinas and Georgia tonight, that is really something. Welcome to our world.

We got 5" in upstate SC- a lot, for us. It's about 12 this AM, again, cold, for us. They don't plow any of the side roads, and folks here don't know how to drive in the snow, so it gets real interesting. I used to live up north, measure snow in feet, and negative numbers on the thermometer. Some of us eventually wise up and move to places where that's not so common! :D

Currently 29 here in Savannah.  We got down to around 26 this morning.  I put on a big, down jacket to get the newspaper at the end of my driveway.  I remember my years in Maine driving a Ford car with a 428 motor and just plowing through the snow.  Never slid off the road or got stuck.  I did have to stop and pour dry gas into the carb, one time, due to the amount of snow/ice that it had in it from the hard blowing wind.  Also remember driving up to Northern Maine in a blizzard and a deer jumping over the guardrail right in front of the car and it coming from a hillside.  Nope I didn't get the benefit of deer meat since he made a clean, fast dash and kept going.  Have a great day!

Warmed up to 32° at 10:45 a.m.  Freezing cold (Goose, some of us Southerners are Cold Weaklings.)  Both stoves running full out.  Nice inside.  Froze, outside.  I did see one squirrel, but then again, squirrels are crazy.

Still in the low 20s this morning and not going to reach freezing today.. but should be back to the upper 60s by the end of the week. This is one of the few snows that has been all snow. Usually we'll get hammered with sleet, freezing rain and then finish up with snow. I like snow... ice, not so much

Our Roadmaster tells a funny story.  He was plowing a new development that had only about three occupied houses, and he was cruising pretty good with no traffic around.  He was turning a corner, and sent the port-a-john flying.  He did stop to check that it was empty before he went back to the Township building.

You can even use dry grits to mix with tiny seeds like turnips and such so you can see where you have planted. Dad went to our local store one time and told Miz Elsie, the owner, he needed 5 lbs of grits and they could be old buggy ones as he was going to plant them, not eat them. Miz Elsie said she had never heard of anyone planting grits and dad told her "Oh yeah, it works great. The grits sprout first and shade the baby turnips keeping them from getting sunburned and stunted." Miz Elsie did not appreciate the humor in his reply.

They talked quite a bit about the conditions he worked in, at the end of it he was asked if that was the coldest he had ever been. He told them, heavens no, the coldest I heve ever been was sitting in a deer stand in Llano Texas. lol

My neighbor,Butch, was a pipe line welder in Wyoming in the early '80's.

He was workin' with a fella from Texas one gnarly November day and the geese were heading south. The fella started packing up his gear.Butch says,"What are you doing?"Fella says,"I'm going south, them geese aren't smarter than me."

Guys, we are being inundated with Ice.  The temperature is down to a bone chilling 42° and we now have a serious accumulation of sleet.

Lynn, all schools in about 20 parishes are shut down tomorrow down this way. Forecast is anywhere from a dusting to 8" here. Would love the 8". ;D Would be a good time to deer hunt. ;D Just might go.

We get them alerts too. Never use too. Now I know you Southern people started them.  ;D
We get more than 6 inches now and it's a special report for a half hour on the news.  :o
I had them grits once. Maybe if I was hog tied, old saying and someone forced fed me,than I suppose I would have to try them things for the second time in my life.

Tuesday was 84F. This morning, 31F and yes, we got some snow. This happens about once every 7-10 years here. :D

A short walk about in the woods.

Forcast is for 6 in or more here. Just got a Kibota rtv900 with snow plow, however something is not right with it, will barely make it up drive way with no load. Dealer is coming Monday to pick it up or repair it. Totally bummed.
I will be putting chains on tractor and running backwards with blade  scrape ( it has standoff feet to keep it out of the gravel). Works, but had high hopes for rtv, hope they can fix it. To much money for sub standard performance. Neighbor has one that works much better
Time will tell.

tree farmer I have had an rtv 900 for 6 yrs now.
I have found that it wont go worth  a hoot if you floor it.
I barely made it up my fairly steep driveway the first time I tried that.
if I use partial throttle it pulls a load up hill just fine.
Just a dusting here in cny

We got 4-5" here at the Cabin.  It was probably the most that I have ever seen here.

I made a video at the Straw House but it will have to wait until I get some internet service.

Haha 110 inches is only half of a "dry" winter.

I feel bad for you guys down south getting snow because nobody knows how to deal with it like we do in the north country, just like we don't deal with hot weather, snakes, and chiggers. hahaha

Today we probably got 8" of new snowfall and the grocery store wasn't emptied out, national guard wasn't called out, and I still managed to drive 60mph on the way to town. haha

Drove to my son's house in Raleigh NC from Charlotte Friday for his birthday.   We passed at least a dozen cars off the road along I85 near Greensboro.  People not paying attention, observing conditions and adjusting to the conditions.  I might should add maintaining proper equipment.  None looked to serious but definitely a high pucker factor for sure.
