Just got it done. It sure helps to keep the smoke away from the people
around a campfire... It was a salt spreader.

Opps... I think I stuck this in the wrong spot...
I thought I put in the general board...
Sorry...
In todays Heat it can be a solar chimney, thermal chimney or solar updraft tower
Finished...

Did you have an aha! moment at the pig roast?
Not a forum pigroast. He's not been to one yet.
For the life of me, I don't know how that is supposed to work unless you get rid of the legs.
Convection currents, that accelerate going from the big funnel to the small pipe, creating a draft.
Yeah I think it would work if you could get the current flowing. I read somewhere that smoke around a fire seems to follow you because of rising warm air from your body that draws it in.
When I was taught to start a fire in a fireplace, I was told to hold a piece of rolled up newspaper lit up the flue to get the draft started.
You may have to do that.
Jim Rogers
I doubt that pipe is large enough to draw much air through. Might have to put a chimney section on to get much draft, or a forced draft fan. ::)
Those are all enclosed area scenarios. Seems any breeze is still going to blow smoke in people's faces with 6 feet of open air above and everything around it.
Will not work pipe to small and needs to be closer to fire pit and at least a12"x 12"
flue.
I did what I wanted it to do. we are in a tight valley so we dont get much wind.
The smoke does go up the pipe no problem. The biggest reason I made it was
to protect the trees over head and it's doing just that. I'm sure if we get some
wind I will have problems but I dont like burnning when the wind blowing anyway.
I will try to get a picture next fire.
I was always told smoke follows beauty, so I usually just sit next to my brother. Together we create a sort of vortex that pushes smoke away in a very rapid rate.😂
Ah yes.white man build big fire, stay far away .Indian build little fire sit up close.< little big man ,movie.
I got some rocks put around it today...

Venturi effect.
Last place I lived I had to put a hood like that above my fire pit and wrap some hardware cloth wire around it after having a couple of parties around the campfire that a grumpy neighbor a couple of houses down called the police on me. Turned out open campfires were not allowed, but being enclosed it was perfectly legal. I had the local fire department inspect it and notify the police to leave me alone. :)
Sure glad I don't have stupid neighbors like that, >:(
That's awesome I can't see the smoke at all
I keep checking this thread to see if it is puffing. bon_fire
Maybe it ain't close enough to the Smoke Tree. :D
We've had a lot of campfires over the years, near the house. Our kids have been grown and gone for years. One night, at a campfire when our Daughter was three or four years old, she went back in the house. She came back out with swimming googles on to keep the smoke out of her eyes. She said it worked.
Well I got to try it out... I'm very happy with the way it works.
It kept all the smoke away from the people.
It also protected the trees from the heat.

Go on! Throw some leaves on and show these Doubting Thomas's. :D
Yup show me. Throw on some green leafy stuff on a normal looking campfire, and put a little house fan off to the side to simulate a slight breeze and then turn on your video. That roaring fire depicted ain't making any smoke
Yea of little faith, ever see a fire devil?
He didn't say he was trying to create a tornado, he said he was funneling smoke from a campfire.
Looks like somebody stole a corn feeder. ;D
Or the lid off of a whiskey still. :) I just want to see the vortex. :o
It was a salt spreader and a stainless steel dye room roller.
Next time I fire it up I'll make some smoke and snap a picture.
Convection, Jeff, convection.
I know what convection is. I also know science says you have to be within certain limits of certain conditions for specific results. I have no doubts that a roaring fire under that contraption is going to show what is wanted to be achieved. In order for me to change my opinion, it would have to be proven to me that given the conditions of a nice little bonfire that you would typically sit around with the family that generates smoke in the face due to air movement around the fire that this device would eliminate or drastically improve this, in its shown configuration, and I doubt it will.
I'm not a skeptic, I'm an observant realist.
I am with Jeff on this, not sure on dimensions here it looks out of poportion. That hood needs to be closer to the fire, then you cant see the guy on the other side your chin waggin to , if any one is as deaf as me you just smile and nod. :D

:o :o :o lid off a whiskey still :o :o :o who would such do a thing :o
glad kbeitz told us it from something much less useful such as a salt spreader :)
I am sure with a nor'easter the smoke would blow out to irritate the sitters. ;D
It would be cool with easily adjustable legs so you could adjust the height to match different fire/wind conditions. Nice idea. As long as it does what you want, it's great! :)
I'm happy with it. It does what I wanted it to do.
I was worried about the trees over the fire. So
far it has keep the heat from destroying them.
I think it keeps the smoke out of our faces.

Wilber, that thing will never fly..... :D
As long as you are happy with results, it is a good invention.
Keep on thinking outside the box, thats where the interesting stuff lives.
Hey.....I think the Tinman is missing some body parts.Kbeitz you better be careful.
