These logs came in this morning. I just sat a spell and looked at them.

Love to get my hands on some of that...
Those are going to make some very purdy boards. I'm relieved it's not a debilitating caprine dermal condition.
Nice wish we had logs like that up north .
Those are some nice logs. Hopefully one of our knowledgeable foresters will explain to us what causes that.
Pretty interesting. Hope you will post pics of the lumber.
At first glance I was thinking you went to see a remake of a Johnny Cash concert....... :)
Cut into them already the suspense is killing me.
Scares me when I see those white rings in the logs. Too many times that ring can be completely rotten and ruin the whole log. Sometimes you do get the purdy wood. I am still waiting on a good explanation on why sometimes sapwood will not turn into heartwood too.
We get a lot of streaky ones in our crappy field cedars ;D ;D ;D in Missouri. These came from a double that yielded about 3-4 eight foot logs from each half to 5-6" at the top. I'm thinking knobby mantles with a place to hang Christmas stockings. Worth millions... :-\ We shall see if they sell at all.

I'll keep my fingers crossed, but haven't seen any serious rot as of now. This one was never pruned and was selected for harvest to test market the knobby mantles. The branches mostly came off one side.
The vertical face in the previous post is 9 1/2". Them's some fat rings. Cedars love my bad ground. ;D 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) :snowball:
Those logs will make boards like this:

And they can be used like this:

Send it all out to me and I will take care of that bad wood for you ;D
Geeter on the mizer and lets see what going on on the inside 8)
Nice
:P
Never seen that before. But if they're good solid wood it'll make some really killer boards! 8)
I'll post pics of the lumber as soon as I get my Solenoid. :D
I hope that you ordered two. ;D
Wow x2 Magicman
Those are really nice.

But I'm gonna saw just 1 log. ;D
I was afraid to read this, I thought it might be a case of goat hemorrhoids :-X ;D
Very nice, but I have to wonder what would cause that? I see that occasionally, but not to that extent. I'm thinking $300 mantles. 8)
From a "Knowledge lacking forester". God made them that way.

And they can be used like this:
MM - what kind of finish did you use on that ceiling?
No finish at all; planed, T&G, and nailed it up. That is the ceilings, walls, & flooring in the Cabin mud room. LINK (https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php/topic,47709.msg951660.html#msg951660)

I am still waiting on a good explanation on why sometimes sapwood will not turn into heartwood too.
From this article (http://www.degruyter.com/dg/viewarticle/j$002fhfsg.2004.58.issue-1$002fhf.2004.010$002fhf.2004.010.xml)
QuoteThe reddish-violet heartwood of Juniperus virginiana L. contains irregularly distributed and longitudinally oriented streaks of light-coloured wood, described as "included sapwood". A histological study revealed that a blockage of the rays, which is caused by wounds often associated with tiny shakes, branch stubs and included bark, may lead to this anomaly. A study of fresh wood immediately after felling of the trees showed that "included sapwood" lacks physiological activity similar to the adjacent normal heartwood. Cellular UV-spectroscopic analysis revealed a secondary metabolism particularly of phenolic compounds in the pit membranes of tracheids during "included sapwood" formation, whereas the reddish-violet flavonoid compounds do not develop in this anomalous wood. Chemical analyses of petrol ether, diethyl ether, acetone and ethanol/water extracts of sapwood, "included sapwood" and heartwood showed that the accessory compounds cedrol, α-cedrene, widdrol, thujopsene and cuparene increased in "included sapwood" compared to sapwood. As opposed to the reddish-violet heartwood compounds, these sesquiterpenes turned out to be highly toxic against a brown-rot fungus in a bioassay. These findings justify defining "included sapwood" as a heartwood anomaly, since the important wood characteristics of this tissue obey the definition of heartwood rather than sapwood. This anomaly should no longer be a reason to exclude this type of wood from commercial utilisation.
Gotta pay for the whole article. I'm not
that curious :D

You are exactly right....in fact, I may let the coaster go just a little higher. :D
Dodgy Loner, thank you for providing an explanation for the ring in the heartwood.
I was impressed with the guts of these logs. :) Looks like red lines were actually painted down the sides. I still have not seen anything like these. These belonged to a customer but I ended up trading him 2 for 1 on the lumber. All he was looking for was Cedar to make toys out of. I sawed these slabs 2 inches thick for a table top.

I just saw em and
leave keep em. ;D
Actually, I kept the one that I sawed too. :)
Purty cool looking. Like racing stripes.
It amazes me that a old man would drool over a stinken old log , but I can't help it , man thats nice stuff...
Dave
If you need help disposing of that ugly stuff let me know. I'm here to help. ;D
I think I clicked "like" when I saw the photos on facebook. :)
Thanks, Dodgy, for the explanation. If I read this correctly, these sapwood streaks are even MORE resistant to brown fungus than the purple heartwood. Go figure...

Its always good to have caring friends. ;D
A lot of people have seen these boards at the mill, some wanting to know what I would take for them.
But sometimes, I know I do, get excited and wanna put a miter saw or planer on them.
I think I'll just sand them real good, let them air dry for a few months and put them in the shop to store.
I may do a little exploring on Ebay and other sites. Who knows, with Cedar facing like this, I may be crazy NOT to sell it at the right price. :o
$300
