Title: tables and benches
Post by: Tam-i-am on April 22, 2015, 06:25:30 PM
This weekend is the Logrite Open House.  Kevin has been busy making tables and benches for the other exhibitors to set up on.  I will try to get a picture of each as each one is unique.

This first bench is a slab of granite supported by Rosa's bench legs.  This thing is so heavy we have to use a forklift to move it! Which is why the background isn't very nice but there was no way for me to move it. ::)

Now you can check out Kev's handy work just like Peavey did.

Above table top was made with crappy doug fir boards bought at Home Depot but all put together it actually looks nice.  (I documented the whole process and hope to post it some day)  Used Alissa Bar table legs.

This table top is a slab on Danielle bar table legs.  The top is a slab of either butternut or elm.  This piece has gone to several woodworking shows and there is always a debate about what it actually is.  Everyone most certain they are correct.  :D

This table top is maple with live edge on Anne's legs.  Around it are two benches made with live edge maple slabs mounted on Alissa's bench legs.

I have posted the bench on the right in another thread so you might have seen that one before.  The one on the right however made its debut this weekend.  I think it has a lot of character and when no one is looking I hope to load it into my car and take it home. ;D

Elm if wavy parenchyma, otherwise not elm.  ;)

Yeah, that is a mouthful.  ;)

Here is a link to the "wavy" parenchyma (cells found in wood that vary by species) in Bruce Hoadley's book. Scroll down to page 60 to see the elm pic and the characteristic that separates elms from other woods. Usually can see with the naked eye, and should see on the polished end of the table slab, as well as the surface between the rings.

BeenThere

wow that is a lot to take in.  I can identify trees by their leaves.  And only generally as I can't tell one oak from another.  Kevin has tried to teach me to id from its bark.  I learned on the forum the way the branches grow is another way.  I found looking for parenchyma even more difficult.  I think I am correct that it is not elm.  I believe it is butternut because it is very light and elm is usually heavy.  Elm is hard to come by around here.  And take a look at the parenchyma. I should clarify I was told it was one or the other, for all I know it could be something totally different. ;)  To look at these I found it really helpful to blow the pic up on my phone.
