Title: Bears
Post by: pep on April 11, 2015, 09:36:03 AM
Was cutting firewood at my shop this week with my side kick(4-1/2) year old German Shepard when I hear a big commotion.  When I shut off the saw and look up I see a black shape in a tree not far from me..  I call the dog and she comes, I put her in the truck.  Then I see two cubs(last years) about 30 or 40 feet up the tree with the sow about 20 feet up.  They stayed in the tree for 2 hours.  Ever since the government cancelled the spring bear hunt, I've been seeing bears regularly at home and at the shop. Getting too close for comfort.  Think I will bring the 12 ga. With slugs to work.  Never had a bear problem till about 4 years ago.  Ever since u see them all the time.. Some big boars too.  When we go to the dump on Tuesday or sat the Bears r there and they aren't  afraid, even with Cubs.
Sure wish the DanG Liberals would bring the hunt back.  They have their hands full with the more than 2 million raccoons living in Toronto along with the 2.6 million people.
Cheers
Pep

Hey Pep,

That fish camp up by Pickle Lake we go to, has had a huge bear problem ever since the spring hunt was shut down, the lodge owner has to shoot on average 5-7 problem bears a year. 5 years ago a large boar ripped the door off the cottage that my folks were staying in! Dad chased him out with a mop!  :D  They are so overpopulated that the little one's are starving and will do anything for food. Silly how city folks decide what happens in the bush, just ain't right. say_what

I thought they had opened the spring bear hunt back up in Northern Ontario,or was that just in certain areas?  It would be good for Northern Ontario tourism.

Post by: pep on April 12, 2015, 08:17:48 AM
DonT. They opened the hunt in three areas.  Sudbury, north Bay and I think thunder bay . The liberals think Northern Ontario ends at north bay. Little do they know it takes two days to drive out of ontario.
Pabst79   The north has a huge bear problem.  I've heard of farmers combining their fields and seeing ten bears pop up.  Once the blue berries and choke cherries are done, the Bears start moving north of me to the fields for oats.  The farmers have culled quite a few.  Also been lots of sightings in the neighboring towns.. Just getting too close for comfort.

Two years ago I counted 18 within a mile of the farm.  That was in the spring not quite sure how many were around to den up in the fall. quite a few were harvested in the fall hunt, well the ones that were left.

I think there is a spring hunt south of hwy 11 on the Timmins side.  There's more north of 11 due to the crops but that guy was almost killed south of town, maybe that's why its open there?

We always spend a day or two in Ignace on our way to Pickle, not sure how far East or West on 11 your talking about, but there is a dump just north of town on 599, 9 times outa 10 there will be bears in the road when we travel through.  :rifle:

This might be the smaller one that looks like a pig. They keep trying to avoid the camera. I had moved it to try and get a better picture of the larger one, but it must have swiped the camera as it was moved out of position and the tree attachment strap to the tree was partly broken. It's a good thing that I have a bear cover over the camera.

Napadogan area is full of bears. It's almost like a circus. I managed to see a lynx out there Thursday as well as two moose. Lots of rabbits to eat, at least 6 per mile early in the morning. Two make a dozen and by 3 generations a year you can't count'm all. :D

I've scared off 2 bear this past month off the roads I work along (walking). Amazing how they don't see you and then when they do they are scarce quick.

I think the bear hunt has been declining in number of hunters. Gun laws (err tax) have not helped.

Many counties in WV have open season on them. Ours opened a few years ago. We occasionally have one come across the pasture or yard. Wife saw a cub in front yard last year - I guess mom had already crossed under neighbor's fence. (One stepped on my gas valve several years back while I was overseas and reduced flow on the ball valve. Wife talked with plumber and decided bad water heater and replaced . No change. More troubleshooting found the valve under crossing half shut. I now have it taped open with duct tape.) I have eaten it but don't care for it and my land is posted so I have told all neighbors off limits if he makes it to my place. They don't do any damage to anything I have. Saw first one here last year in October while bowhunting back side of my place.

They are bad around the lake cottages. They have learned how to push up and open those lidded community dumpsters. I bet they could open a jam jar.  ;D :D

We were sitting outside a nice restaurant about an hour south of Anchorage AK a couple years ago waiting for them to open when my BIL noticed a black bear come out and try to get in the dumpster. My wife jumped out and started taking pictures. Bear walked around then climbed on top and bounced up and down trying to get in but no joy so he took a crap on the lid of the dumpster, climbed down and went back in the woods.

Had another bear at my shop yesterday, the eleventh since April. My G-Shepard chased it away.  She was about 10 ft. From it by the time I called her back. Sure am glad that I bring her to work everyday otherwise I would need eyes in the back of my head.  I'm not a bear hunter but I might have to change that.  Ever since the spring hunt was cancelled the Bears have been multiplying like rabbits.

When I worked in West Virginia on the Monongahela National Forest, the bear there would eat and destroy our wooden road and trail signs. We would have to place stiff wire over them for some protection.

I saw a young bear this summer at a new sign post on the highway. It's a treated post and he was clawing and biting it. I put up a bat house on a treated post set in cement and one liked to claw and bite at it to. He only made his mark once and figured it didn't taste too good. ;D :D I think it must relate back to them clawing and pushing over dead wood to find grubs or something.  I know the old rotten solitary logs on the ground get a good role every spring. :D

I see where one bear marked his home territory with some big dung piles. Don't see that too often in this neck of the woods. Used to find it all the time in BC.  ;D

We have blue birds nesting by the garden, but no bears. ;)

A friend of mine is a timber framer and does a lot of work around Lake Tahoe. Two years ago he was out on the Cal/Neva Peninsula which has some large lots and many big rocks and denning sites.  Every day at least 5 bears would go by the job site. They had names for them , and had no troubles. The largest a garbage eating bear was huge, they called "Minivan." He always went through fences instead of over them.

One afternoon a new bear shows up. He was a young male, blondish fur, kind of beat up looking and under weight.  He was probably searching for a new territory.  The bears hangs around the the job site for half an hour.  The guys working there are going up and down ladders and keeping an eye on him. My friend is eye balling this bear.  All at once the bear lowers his shoulder and comes at him at a dead run. No warning signs of woofing or clacking of jaws. My friend runs to his truck and gets inside with about 30 yards to spare. He has a revolver but did not use it. The bear finally wanders off.  After some discussion, it was concluded that this was a predatory charge. We reported this bear to CA Fish and Game and NV DOW.  Black bears are typically not predatory but a few are and you don't know what order they come in.

Sawmills are for bears too. I have a neighbor that wants any band I break. He cuts them in strips and puts them on the door and windows of his remote cabin, claims it helps discourage trouble bears.

Thirty years ago I was working out of a mining camp in SE Alaska. There were about 15-20 guys running drill rigs to identify a molydenum ore body, one of the largest in the world. The camp was created with a portable sawmill flown in by helicopter. It was the only way to access the camp.  In those days the camp had a compost pile for their kitchen waste.  It attracted bears on a regular basis.  They would get 3 chances before they would get shot.  It was hard to scare them off and they really liked the garbage.

We have our share here in South Central Virginia too.  I used to plant some sunflowers and corn for the deer, but it became futile.  The bears would have everything cleaned up by October.  I have some wild pear trees here on the farm and they tear them up every year.  My Dad lost his lab to a bear a few years back.  She made it back to the yard, but was mortally wounded.  Three hound puppies that were with her, didn't make it back.  Dad also had a run in with a sow and cubs in his garden one night a couple of years ago.  He walked up on here in his corn patch.  She was laying down and let him get within 8 feet before standing up.  She advanced and his dog intervened.  She held her ground for about 20 or 30 second until the cubs retreated and then she ran.  Dad is convinced that his dog saved him from certain injury that night.

Here are a couple of pictures of bear damage to a utility pole on an adjoining farm.  I have been told that this is territorial marking.  I have seen plenty of pine trees that have been marked, but this is the first pole I have seen damaged.

This fellow was taken about 10 miles from my farm.  He was just shy of 700 pounds and 9 feet.  There have been a number of bears in excess of 600 pounds taken in the area.

Have you guys noticed more bear activity, or population, recently, than there was, say, a few years ago?

Seems like I'm hearing about more encounters.

There have been several interesting incidents that have hit the news this year, like the woman who was doing yoga in North Carolina when a bear came up behind her and started licking her.

Not really any more sightings, always been quite a few around in my lifetime. Although, in lake cottage country, with more cottages, more garbage, the bears have more pickings from the dumpsters. And they know how to push up the lids off them to.  :D The local town is a ghost town during the summer, everyone off to the cottages. Not too much going on, even the fair week is pretty much 1/3 of it's former self.

I've been here in this area my whole life. I have only seen bear in the last five years and I can count them on one hand. My Father hunted this area hard. He grew up on the farm and got off The Farm when he married my Mother at 40. He never saw a bear here. Not saying there was none here, but kinda odd he never saw any.

The other day I just had the second black bear run across my woodlot and head for the swamp.  This is the second in two years.  I didn't see it, my neighbor told me about it.  Said it was at least 300 lbs.  So yeah - increased bear activity in the last few years from none at all to two!  We've been here for 16 years.

Bear hunting probably began to take shape here in the 50's or 60's. Mostly before that was deer and moose and before the collapse of the woodland caribou herd in the thirties they hunted caribou. But there were a lot of sheep farms around years ago and the bears became a problem. When I was a youngster there was 3 sheep farms close to home. My grandfather hunted bear for at least 40 years, he died 21 years ago, so can add that onto how long bears was hunted here as a province wide sport hunt.

One of my grandfather's adds in 1970 of "Field and Stream" magazine.  Demerchants' Sporting Camps, listed under New Brunswick.

Last week a sow and two cubs walked down the beach at Lake Tahoe and took a swim in the middle of the afternoon. The beach was full of people but the bears are habituated to people, making them dangerous. That is one of the changes, is bears are losing their fear of humans.

One lady in Tennessee was mauled this year while running a marathon. A guy in the northwest, Idaho maybe? was killed by a grizzly this year. we also had a mountain biker in Nevada hit a bear while speeding downhill, and he was tossed off his bike-- he had a helmet cam, and you can find that video. Also there was a video of people in Yellowstone, where a bear opened their car door.  ;D

There have been quite a few spotted in this area.

Two weeks ago, I saw a cub (60 lb or so) cross the meadow behind my house (200 yards), then about 15-20 minutes later, the old sow went across.

I let neighbors know, so that they could tighten the reins a little on their kids!

Early Bear Season opened and no one saw a bear in the local area.

It's against hunting laws to shoot a sow that has a cub with her, but then, when you're hunting and a bear comes out all by itself how are you to know if it has a cub?   :-\

I guess when one sees a bear that they want to shoot, they would have to wait a few minutes to see if a cub shows up!   ::)

Fall is the time of year when bears show up all over the Valley, including the alfalfa fields. People on the other side do not go outside at night without a headlamp and making a lot of noise.  Some bears at Lake Tahoe have figured out how to break into people's houses when they are at work. They also have learned to open up cars.

I know someone through facebook who is always videoing and photographing those bears around Tahoe area. She's pretty smart, but I told her to be careful to. Black bears are what she photographs, they are on a lot of the foot paths people use. I to have been among the black bears so to speak, but I don't trust them to be friendly.  ;)

Title: Re: Bears
Post by: Ron Scott on September 20, 2019, 06:54:32 PM
With the neighboring landowner's large Kubota tractor with front end loader and with the help of him and his wife.;) Lucky that I knew the area well and was able to guide them with the end loader down an old skid road to the gutted bear. Shot it at 7:00 pm and did not get it out of the woods until 10:00 pm so it took awhile in the dark.

Quite a workout for this old body. I shot my only other bear 61 years ago when I was age 22 and  don't recall near this much work. Of course that bear was only half the size of this one.

It was taken on private forest land which I have managed since 1982. Now owned by the 3rd landowner who I still watch over the property for. The property is under the Commercial Forest Act whereby the landowner must allow hunters on the property, and is required to keep the property in timber management. The landowner is then compensated with a property tax break for doing so.

A young woman killed by a black bear yesterday in Swan Hills , Alberta. She was a tree planter and they are pretty bear aware. Has been a death most years for several years. So much for the old story; they won't bother you if you leave them alone.

One of the fella's had his gas jug chewed overnight out on the thinning block. Made a hole in a corner, but had tipped the jug so it never poured out. :D

I was sitting with my back to the window mucking on the computer when I heard a noise, turned around to see a young black pawing at the glass! I am thinking it was a yearling newly separated from the sow. The landlady called the conservation office and was told to wait to see if it left, if not call them back. I felt sorry for it, if habituated it was a goner.  The heat fires and heavy smoke are making life awfully tough for wildlife. Food sources are  limited.

I live in Nevada near Lake Tahoe.  We are down in a valley at 5,000 feet.  The Caldor and Tamarack Fires have displaced a lot of wildlife this year.  The drought makes it even worse.  We have black bears wandering around in neighborhoods surrounded by sagebrush and alfalfa fields.  Bears are everywhere.  They are desperate for food.  Try to work around them as best you can.

The fires have been very hard on wildlife. A number of bear and others have been treated for burns, especially burned feet.

Very Sad for all wildlife. It's hard to believe with the technology and equipment that we can't take care of situations before they get out of control. But politics, rules and regulations that have made situations that could have been prevented or minimized.

Bears have been popping up around here numerous times in the last few years.  Sadly they all seem to end up dead, whether it be some idiot with a gun who has never seen a bear before so he kills it and loses hunting rights for life or whether it be because people who have never seen a bear before follow it around in their car until it ends up killed on a highway.

Good to hear they are coming back.  I killed a legal doe in 1966 when I came back from the service, got written up in the locals for killing the first  legal deer in years in Franklin County,  Had also begun seeing turkey and pheasant.  Seems we Missorians had just about eaten the game animals out during and after the depression and were slow coming back.
