Was just wondering if anyone uses these. I used 5/16" 70 grade and they seem to break fairly easy. I found some 5/16" 100 grade at the Woodsman Field Days in Boonville and bought a few to try. I love them. Light, easy to carry and very strong...have yet to break one. I went last year to get more and asked the dealer where I bought them the previous year if they had any more and they looked at me like I was crazy. I wanted to replace my heavy 3/8" chokers with them. I will look again this year but have my doubts if I will find any. I may have to go online and buy a barrel or a 1/2 barrel of chain and make my own. Might not be heavy enough for the Big Skidders but for me they work great. Most trees I pull are 24" and under. Sometimes I have to use one choker and two sliders to get them hooked up and pulled out. lol My buddy laughs at me when this happens.
the WLL between 5/16 is 4700 vs 5700. Its surprising you break 70's frequently, but have 100's hold up when there is only about 20% more strength on the g100.
Check with a construction supply house for crane chokers :)
This is from an old Labonville catalog,2011,Pewag G-100 3/8 ROUND-LINK CHAIN. Part # G100R. They also carry overhead chains too. 5/16 through 5/8

If you ever used the two you would see the difference.
We have a company down here called "certified sling". they are great for lifting equipment. find a rigging retailer in your area and they will get you anything you want. (if they are half as good as certified sling)

I have, and I do, but what I was saying was the real rated strengths are not that different.
I source most of my chain from AWdirect. They are near by so shipping isn't too bad on heavy things.

You are right, for strength rating so close you wouldn't think there would that much difference in them. It's like night and day. I will look one more time at the Woodsman Field Days and see if they have them again. If not I will buy some chain on line and make my own chokers.

So I was thinking about this... horizontal use pulling devices are rated with a 4:1 safety factor. so..
WLL Max strength
G70 4.7 18.8
G100 5.7 22.8
so the WLL is only 1k different, but the ultimate strength is 4k different. That strength is in a straight line pull. Once you start doing off-angle things the strength drops substantially. For example a 30-degree angle pull can reduce strength by almost 50%.
You are probably still exceeding the safe working load limits of even G100, and should consider upgrading the chain you are using to something with a higher rating than even the 5/16 G100.

For Big trees or a real hard pull I carry a couple 3/8" chokers, but for the firewood trees or smaller logs you can't beat the 5/16" 100 grade. My buddy has a bigger skidder and runs 3/4" swedged cable and he hasn't broke any yet and he tortures them. lol They are so much easier to carry while pulling the cable, especially if you have to pull it any distance. lol

I know Al real well. Very nice gentleman to do business with. I asked him once and he didn't know if he could get them or not. I am thinking I got the ones i got from Comstock at the Field Days.

AW direct has it.
At AW Direct it is about $5.45 a foot. At Tulsa Chain.com it is $3.65 a foot.

Was there today and they had grade 70 and grade 80...no grade 100 5/16" chokers. I asked for them and they never heard of them. That was around noon.
They did have some 9/32" grade 100 but that is not 5/16".
I'm sorry I did look at that grade 80 it was china made I bought 9/32 us made 100 figuring it would be stronger.

I thought about buying a couple and trying them but they looked awful small. At 100 grade they should be as strong as 5/16" 70 grade...maybe stronger. I think if a guy bought a barrel of 100 grade 5/16" chain and made a bunch of chokers and took them up there to sell they would be gone in a few hours.
I've been pulling pole wood with g70 9/32 for a couple years now. I broke them sometimes not that often. I think the 100 will work out great.
