Title: '85 slant 6 oil pan gasket
Post by: tyb525 on December 07, 2011, 04:49:28 PM
Has anyone here changed the oil pan gasket on a dodge truck with the slant 6? I'm about to do it, but I want to know if there are any special tricks I should know about.

The Leaning Tower of Power!  I don't know much about your query but here is one place that could probably give you step-by-step instructions:

Good luck!

Been there done that many times in fact.  Usually depends on the truck.  Some of them but very few you have to remove the driveshaft and block the back of the tranny up so you can remove the tranny crossmember to be able to slide the pan back.  Can't for the life of me remember what year the truck was but somehow I believe it was one from the sixties with the three on the tree trans.  ;D  That ol truck sure moved I'll tell you an haul too.  ;D  We hauled a hundred square bales in one load so we didn't have to go back for a second load.  :D

bring it to the car wash with 3 to 6 cans of foaming degreaser before you tear into it, bomb everything on the engine and trany, avoid the distributor and alternator, you will thank me later!

No I'm not sure, since the whole distributor side of the engine is covered in oil and grime. I know the valve cover gasket seeped a little, but quit when I snugged it up (about 3 ft/lbs). I guess I should clean the engine real good so I  can tell exactly where it's coming from. Looks like its dripping from the rear of the oil pan gasket, although that could very well be the rear main as well. I was hoping it wouldn't be, though.

Not too big of an issue right now, just uses a quart every couple weeks (daily driver)

Sometimes you can gain clearance by UN doing the motor mounts and piling the motor up a few inches.  Depending on the condo tion o of the truck, im light cut the cradle and weld it back in.
