Title: Sad News Regarding Brother Noble
Post by: NoblesSon on September 29, 2011, 08:46:30 PM
Dear Forestry Forum,

I am the son of Brother Noble (Noble Barker) and I wanted to pass along the sad news that Brother Noble passed away this past Sunday. He passed away peacefully during the middle of the night. I wanted to let you know how much he enjoyed interacting on the forum and how highly he thought of the friendships that he developed on this site. He would always tell us stories about the people and topics on the board. If you would like to read his obituary or send your sympathies you can go to the website of Clinkingbeard funeral home in Gainesville, Missouri to leave a messge to the family.

Our condolences to the Barker family.

We had the pleasure and honor to visit with Br. Noble a couple of times.  Also his dad and son Tom.  Great people in a beautiful garden spot of south central Ozarks.

Here is a link to a page on our web site that has pictures of our visit with Br. Noble.

A sudden hole has appeared in my heart as I found this thread.  Bro. Noble was one of the dearest of friends whose hand I never got to shake.  His wit, wisdom and kindness will never be forgotten until I join him.  He left a legacy on this forum, a thread called, "Standing in the Need of Prayer", where we lift up the needs of any who are in need.  I don't even feel the need to make an entry there in his behalf, but a mental prayer for him and to him will go up every time I see it.  Rest in Peace my good friend.

According to Webster, "noble" means "outstanding qualities."   Mr. Noble Barker's picture should forever be etched in all dictionaries defining "noble."  It will be in my mind.

Only for a relatively short time did I know Noble.  We bacame good friends,we shared notes on farming, he helped save my daughters calf, I advised him on fish stocking and feeding.  His love for his family, especially grandchildren, was contageous.  He was a man I admired and will forever more.  His family will find comfort knowing we shall all meet again someday in heaven above.  Until then good bye my Noble friend.

I love reading Bro Nobles posts, he was so intelligent and so funny. While I never had the pleasure to meet Noble, I did have the pleasure of buying lumber from him. He was truly a class act all the way.

One thread I remember him the most from was about the women in the Bible. I laughed and laughed at the comments. I will search to find that thread so you all can enjoy his wonderful humor.

Well, that ruins my day.  Noble and I were special friends. We met personally awt the first pig roast and found ourselves connected at the hip, both shying from large groups.

We spent many evenings sharing email of intimate personal contacts, including a friend he had in South  America, Tom and the "Stupid Cows". I'm really going to miss him a lot.  His passing leaves a hole in my heart. I hope that he is singing with the angels now and telling  them of his friend in Florida.  Life is short and we'll all be back together again soon.

I have a special file of Noble's talks about Tom.  He sure loved his boy

A poem for Brother Noble about cows and life:

The Cows At Night
by Hayden Carruth

The moon was like a full cup tonight,
too heavy, and sank in the mist
soon after dark, leaving for light

faint stars and the silver leaves
of milkweed beside the road,
gleaming before my car.

Yet I like driving at night
in summer and in Vermont:
the brown road through the mist

of mountain-dark, among farms
so quiet, and the roadside willows
opening out where I saw

the cows. Always a shock
to remember them there, those
great breathings close in the dark.

I stopped, and took my flashlight
to the pasture fence. They turned
to me where they lay, sad

and beautiful faces in the dark,
and I counted them–forty
near and far in the pasture,

turning to me, sad and beautiful
like girls very long ago
who were innocent, and sad

because they were innocent,
and beautiful because they were
sad. I switched off my light.

But I did not want to go,
not yet, nor knew what to do
if I should stay, for how

in that great darkness could I explain
anything, anything at all.
I stood by the fence. And then

very gently it began to rain.

As so many have already said, there is an empty spot in our world.  I never met Brother Noble in person and yet, as a country boy who grew up around farming and hauled many a can of milk from farms to a cheese factory, I felt a certain kinship.  I will always remember Noble and his "stoopid cows".  He and his family will be in my prayers tonight and days to come.

This is not the kind of news one wants to get.  Jeff sent me an email earlier today.  This is now the second time (the first being Mark Mathys) that I am aware of that we have lost a pillar of The Forestry Forum.  If my memory is any good the picture of Noble that Jeff posted is one that I took at Rick Schmalzried's place many years ago north of Peoria. Noble and his wife Nancy would come to Pekin so Nancy could visit her Mother.  So Noble would take the opportunity to come and visit me at my home just outside Peoria or I would drive to Pekin and hook up at a restaurant to chat.  Becky, Jeremiah and I drove down to Noble's Farm in Ozark County MO. The spring of 2003.  That's when I brought back some cedar logs that I bought from him and brought back the tree stump that the beavers had eaten and Noble cut down to have me take to Jeff in Michigan later that summer in July.    One thing that I am sure most of you know about Noble was that his first love was for the Good Lord.  We stayed at Zanoni Mill Bed and Breakfast and the Morrison's (owners)  had arranged for Bryant River Gospel Group (the group that Noble sang with) to have an evening session of singing in the basement.  It was fun to see them and hear them play and sing.  Becky sang along with nearly all of their songs. Since I can't sing for hoot,  I just watched listened and enjoyed.   I also feel a secondary kinship to Noble's father,  Noble Barker Senior cause both of us are Caterpillar retirees.  So that officially means that some of Noble's blood is yellow because Caterpillar is a family also.   Over the many years, I thought of Noble often and I always felt that he had a brotherly love for mankind second to none.  Okay.. I have to stop now cause the tears are welling up in my eyes.  But before I do, I want to say that over the next few days I am going to make an Album in Facebook of many of the nearly 200 photos I took the spring of 2003 at Noble's place.   When I have finished,  I will make the album public and I will post the link to the album back here.  It will take a while cause I have terribly slow internet access speed.    I know Noble is with God now.    We will miss him

Noble and Nancy, and one of the sons, at an early pig roast.  I recognized early on that he was a special person, and his posts were an "always read" for me from that point on.  I always got a kick out of his "stoopid cows" remarks.  I read his obituary, and it's obvious that his legacy is well established, and his place in life highly regarded.  His family might not see the extent of the comments here on the Forestry Forum, but I have hopes that Son, David will see to that. They will see the extent of our regards for Bro. Noble.  Condolences to the entire family.

When I told my wife about Brother Noble's passing,  she recalled the time that the four of us,  Noble, Becky, Jeremiah (my son) and I were riding around Ozark County in my pickup truck with me driving.  Noble would tell me now you gotta keep your speed up going up this hill till you get to the top of the hill. (no prob with V8 pickup) and when you neared the crest of the hill the road suddenly veered to the left and of course the natural reaction is to let off the gas and hit the brakes.  Noble laughed and said "Ah you chickened out like everyone else does"     then he said,  when we were kids, we would take the hill full speed all the time for thrills.    I think as Noble got older,  he got wiser,  cause his pickup truck back in 2003 only had a 6 cylinder,  probably so he wouldn't be tempted to climb the hills of the Ozark Co. roads at speeds capable only in a V8.

At the end of our visit to Noble's in 2003.  Noble was driving in his pickup and we in ours.  We had lunch at a Mexican restaurant about an hour north of his farm.  I can't recall the name of the town.  Anyway, after lunch, he wanted to take us
by an antique equipment museum that he and Noble Sr. were actively involved in getting established.   Noble pulled up to the museum grounds in his pickup truck and I was right behind him in mine.  I pulled into the grass to park (no parking lot)
and got out of the truck.   About that time,  up walked a 6 foot tall Easter Bunny and I started getting chewed out for parking on the grass.   It seems that this Easter Bunny and a few other people had just finished hiding a bunch of Easter Eggs for
a hunt that was about to take place in an hour or so.    Noble never did let me live that one down as he frequently reminded me that I was the only person he ever knew that was nearly assaulted by an Easter Bunny.
Whoever was in the costume was pretty hot under the collar probably both literally due to the costume and figuratively too.

That is a great Noble Story. :)

Riding around in a pickup with Noble either as the driver or a passenger was a treat. One time Tammy and I along with Noble stopped at a small store to get a coke. Tammy and I went in and Noble remained in our truck. Some how the truck alarm was set off just after we entered the store and we couldn't hear it from within the store. When we finished up and went back outside we found the horn was blaring and the lights were flashing and there sat Noble reading a book that had been laying on the dash and acting as if he was oblivious to the whole thing.  The book was upside down. :D

Nobleson,
I am very sorry for your loss.  Your father had and will continue to have a great deal of influence on this membership.  Though I had not met him, he was a model of decorum that all of us appreciated and that I respected greatly.

David, thank you for letting us know.  I've been out of town for a while and am just catching up.  Your dad is going to be sorely missed around here.  It was my honor to chat with him here from time to time and to pray for he and his family.  I'm really going to miss him and am upset that we never got to personally meet and shake hands.

Prayers for comfort to you and yours from Alaska.

I'm coming late to this awful news, but it's no less heartbreaking.

Noble, and Tom, were two of my 'advisors', always good for 'fatherly advice' when I needed it.

I recall one message I got that made a huge difference to me and really made me think about something I was going to do, that I didn't. It was definately the right advice, I just couldn't see past my anger at the time.

It's so sad...

L.
