Title: birds eye pine ?
Post by: catskillpond on June 23, 2011, 05:05:59 PM
We recently repaired a dam on an old resort that had a lodge built in the 1890 on the inside wall was pine with a bazzillion small knots the old caretaker said it was birdseye pine. Is there such a tree or does it grow like that. Thanks for any input I have a few good freinds that have logged since they were in diapers so i dont want to give them the satisfaction of asking a stupid ?

i've seen birdseye in more than one 2x4.  i believe these are typically stamped spf, which is spruce, pine, fir?  anyways, i thought it was remarkable in that i'd only ever heard of birdseye maple.  so yes, i believe it can occur in other species as well as maple...

I've seen birdseye in several species, including oak and poplar.

White pine has limbs in whorls.  Limbs become knots when you saw a log into lumber.  If these whorls occur close together because of slow growth, there is a dramatic effect.  Here, it was always called 'knotty pine paneling".

This knotty pine paneling is different from "birds eye" like  in maple because the knots cause the effect.  True birds eye is a distortion or bump in the cambium and not from a knot.

"not from a knot".  Hmmmm, no wonder English is such a hard language to learn  :).

Those are dimples that are common figure in lodgepole pine.  It's not birdseye, but it is considered figured and similar. Dimples are also found in jack pine on occasion.

Birdseye is also in yellow birch and white ash.

One guy was splitting firewood and he brought some of it in to the marketing board, it was yellow birch birdseye. Had the bark still on it.

I've seen solitary eyes in white ash, actually reminds me of a tiger's eye gemstone.

Do a Google for "lodgepole pine dimple" and it should lead you to some photos and info.

That designation includes jack pine, a species also common with dimple figure.

Ponderosa pine has birdseye lumber on very rare occasions. There are several houses in town with cabinets made of birseye pine selected from the big historic (closed) sawmill.  Usually one of the mill workers will set "pattern pine" material like this aside for a friend.  The lumber market never sees this wood.  The public does not see birds eye pine until it is installed in the friends house.  In pine there is no commercial demand for pattern wood.  The mill worker or friend gets rare/unique/exclusive furniture and cabinetry for a common price.

A lot of that depends on if someone wants to market it and how easy is it to come by to actually meet any kind of demand. I think these angles have been explored by many people. You take birdseye maple, I can go buy some right today locally. Can someone in Georgia? Probably not. It would be shipped in from Canada or the northern tier states and probably cost a lot more. I know several places in the woods I can lay my hand on the trunk of a birdseye figured maple. Not sapsucker peck.

Correct. Birdseye is simply a characteristic. An adjective if you will.

I have seen birdseye pine quite often in the home center piles. Mostly in the 2x stock, but somethimes in the 1x rack. Maybe I should start pulling it and do something nice with it.

The local wood store used to have it in their regular 1x pine rack, but they started seperating it when folks started picking and choosing it out special.

It's funny, I never see jack pine as in SFP framing material here. But they do saw it here. Doesn't grow in the hardwood belt here, mostly a boreal tree on glacial sand. Any outside of that were planted. Irving has planted millions of them down around Sussex and up in the northern regions. They don't plant them tight enough though, they grow too limby and crooked if you space them like a spruce. The best ones I ever see are ones grown back from fires. Some they planted as small plots in Deersdale, it looks like crap.

I have only seen it once and build our two Daughters a table from it.  Not good pictures, but the tables were unusual.

Could have been Scots pine. In the photos of dimple I have seen, they are numerous and conical in appearance.

Nice coffee table Magic. :)

How many knots can you tie in a rope that is moving naught 1 knot? ??? SD- Is the birdseye encountered in the other hardwood species caused by the same thing it is in maple?  I ask for I know not ;)

I would assume so murdock, but I'm no expert on how it's inoculated or what causes it. But, the yellow birch birdseye looks like the maple birdseye.
