Title: Any Southern or Central Maine loggers out there?
Post by: Jimmy Chitwood on November 05, 2009, 05:31:56 PM
I was born logging in Eastern Maine.  As I'm sure you all know, Bangor was once the logging capital of North America. My dad used to pay the Old Town Mill $10 for stumpage and we would pull out 12-16 cord per year.  I've recently moved to Southern Maine, and I'm having a very tough time finding tree-length hardwood.  I'm willing to pay a good price, but who can I trust to deliver what they promise?  I'm really hoping to connect with a reputable source for many years to come.  I can buy it cut, split and delivered, but I love to work the saw and maul.  As a school teacher with a stay-at-home wife and two babies, I need to save all I can.  Any help out there?

Welcome to the forum.

Probably are loggers out there just wishing they knew where to sell some of their low grade logs as firewood logs. Maybe Craigslist would be another place to start for you.

Hi Jimmy, I'm not from Maine but have been to Maine a few time. Something to think about to save you money from buying tree lenght logs to be processed into firewood. I sell firewood in Boston area and I opened a tree recycling area a few years back and I process all my firewood from that. I also charge a dumping fee for everything thats brought in. Its more work to process firewood from unwanted logs, but you are also protecting our enviroment when you recycling logs that no one excepts or wants. So there is a way to have a less expense in purchasing logs. Just an idear you might want to consider. I think others on this forum will also post alot of good idears for you. Good luck

Hey Jimmy,

I just joined the forum.  I live in Mass. but have a 48 acre lot in Brownville, Me.  I'm an amateur woodworker, contractor and part-time college teacher in Mass.  I may be starting a logging operation up there this winter/spring.  Have mixed hardwoods and softwoods and need lumber for my business down here.  Also thinking about a custom wine racking business.  I've built some cellars for collectors before and designed my own racks and storage units.  I always seem to be able to use wood, so I decided to try some small scale logging as part of my land management plan.  I will have an abundance of cordwood from this if it goes well.  Where are you in Maine?  I've been reading on this forum for over a year and its a tremendous resource.  I've learned a great deal already and looking forward to getting to know some folks here.  Best regards, Steve.
