Title: Chainsaw accident (Graphic Photo)
Post by: Haytrader on March 16, 2009, 08:31:34 AM
I recieved a call from the wife of one of my drivers yesterday afternoon. She told me that Brock had an accident while sawing firewood. It was serious enough they airlifted him to a hospital in Wichita, Kansas. I don't know any more details but hope they got him sewed up good.

I am amazed by all the pictures and videos of people operating chainsaw with no personal safety equipment.  Not saying that your guy was not using his, but many don't.

I had a close call yesterday.  :-\  :-\

I had taken my chaps off and then saw some brush I should have cut. Kicked back a little right into my thigh.
Luckily I had some Wild Ass jeans on and the double heavy duty fabric took most of the damage. I had 1 small scratch on my leg.

Of course Jill was right there watchin'  ::)  ::)  ::)

She reminded me that with all the blood thinners I take that I probably wouldn't make it to the Hospital  :-\  :-\

So after seeing that, did Jill offer to do all your chainsaw work?    :o

;D ;D

She probably took all of them away.  A friend of mine cut himself pretty bad with a knife, then did the same thing again a year later and his wife told him he couldn't play with sharp objects anymore. I told him when she get's through with him he'll be hunting with a BB gun and a butter knife.  :D

Brock's cut is on his arm. I don't know if he had any chaps or not. I guess there was another guy there so he may have had the saw and Brock was in the wrong place.
Regardless, probably not good.

Stuff like that usually ain't good.  :-\  :-\  Saw chain and skin just don't get along.

I hope he's doing well.   ;)

His wife called a while ago and reported that they haven't had surgery yet. She didn't know why. She said the cut was 17cm. long and 6cm. wide. It did not reach the bone.

Fer you Mer-cans that's 6.6 inches long and 2.3 inches wide.   Must've been a raking cut.  Sure hope his arm is OK.  Sounds like there is some grafting to be done.  At least he's in the hospital where there's some experts.  Left unattended in the field, it would be harder and harder to close.

I was at a friends place last week and saw his son (20 something) running the saw with no gear on.  I went and fussed at him to put the stuff on.  I also gave him a lesson on starting it properly.  He was holding by the trigger handle and drop starting it.  He had no control of the saw while ripping on the cord.  I sure hope he does not hurt himself. ::)

Haytrader,
I hope your Buddy has a speedy recovery without long term damage.

> so he may have had the saw and Brock was in the wrong place.

This is exactly why I avoid having anyone around me while I am using a chainsaw.

That is the other reason I do not work for a tree company, I do not want to be around idiots running chainsaws and be taken out by stupidity.

You know, these chainsaw shirts/coats are starting to sound like a good idea, this is the second post about an chainsaw arm injury that might have been avoided or lessen with Kevlar.

Sure hope his injury is less then my friend's. It is like a gun shot wound, no such thing as a minor accident when that chain hits flesh.

I visited with Brock today at his home. He is doing well but it will take time for his arm to heal. He was a happy camper due to good drugs.  ;D
I post the picture not to freak you out, but rather to make us all more aware of the danger assocciated with running equipment, especially chainsaws.

You said arm, but, that looks like the outside of his right leg (one of the most likely places to get hit with a chainsaw) ?

Either way, way gross and painful. That looks like it could have been a life ending accident if I have the depth correct in the picture near the right side.

That is his left wrist, not ankle. He is a big stout young man.
Went to see him today and didn't find him home. Talked to his wife at work and she said he was bored so he walked to a friends to visit.

He must be  :D  looks like his arm is about 3x the size of the nurse's or doctor's arm in that picture!

That hurts me just looking at it, I hope he recovers 100%.
