Title: Today was a great day..
Post by: tyb525 on January 31, 2009, 11:32:04 PM
Cause I bought a sawmill.  :) A Woodmizer LT10 with the 10HP motor. Slightly used, less than half a log.

Of course it all started when I went to the Woodmizer demo with my mom. I secretly had my hopes up that we would get one, but wasn't sure it would happen. After watching the mills work, and having my heart set on an LT15, I got to see the LT10 run, and I got to cut a board with it. After that, I was bit (by that old sawmill bug). Soon after, I noticed an LT10 packed up on a crate in the corner. I investigated, and saw it had a 10HP instead of the 7. It was about $1000 less than normal price. Seemed like a great deal to me  :)

So I talked to (I forget his name, last name was Mann I think) and he was very friendly and knowledgeable. Actually, the everyone there was. The next thing I knew, the deal was done.  8)

I don't actually have the sawmill yet, as we didn't drive the truck. So next Saturday we're going to go pick it up. I am extremely excited to get it up and running  ;D. I have a feeling this week is going to go awful slow.

What a great way to leave your teens.  With a sawmill!!

You delt with "The Man".  He's the man in charge. If you could get a good deal it would be  from Dave.

Dave Mann, VP of the Sawmill Division for Wood-Mizer Products

And you are a good judge of character.  He is a friendly sort. You should see him joking around at the Forestry Forum Pig Roast.   He has had pie in his face and been dumped in the pool too.  He and his bunch are great with the little kids.

I might be as happy as you to find you with a mill.  Please take plenty of pictures and write down the whole story of your first log.  :)

I figured he was important  ;). I'll remember to take pictures, and maybe video if I can get someone to hold the camera  :D.

I still find it somewhat hard to believe that I own a mill now. It's like a dream come true. I can't wait to use it. I already had a few logs that I was gonna pay someone to cut, but now I can do it myself.  8)

I'll let you guys know, and I'm probably gonna have to invite my friends and family and neighbors to watch, if they don't show up by themselves  :D.

Hopefully I can turn this into a small business after college, which would probably mean getting a bigger mill, but that's ok with me.

Right now I think I'll just cut for myself mostly, but I'll probably end up selling some too.

This is exciting.  :)

WAY TO GO!!!!

Being young, you can whip through all that hard work with nary a complaint.  Me, I still love it, but I don't whip through as much anymore.  That sawmill will open many doors for you.  I want to see some pics of the little beauty in action ;D.

After using a chainsaw mill a little, I think it will be a welcome break. :) I have a 50hp tractor w/crane-loader type thing on the back, cant hook, chainsaws, and 75 acres of nice hardwood. Oh and an old barn to air dry it in, for now.

I'll probably end up putting the mill in the barn, as soon as we get some of the junk cleaned out of it. For now, it'll be under a tarp, but hopefully that won't be long.

I warned you that this would happen.  It's something about that building with all that orange paint and sawdust.   :D  Well you got your birthday present.  Congrats.  Now the fun begins.  Before long you will be looking at an LT-40 or a super.  Then an edger, a logging arch, support equipment, it never ends.  You'll see them in your dreams.  No turning back now that the sawdust is in your veins.

You will enjoy sawing lumber.I had to wait until I was almost 40 to get my mill. That will keep you off the streets.  :D  I should of put mine under cover, meaning a building or barn like what you have. The paint stays so much brighter.I should of built one first thing for it.Please take pictures for all of us to enjoy.

Chris: You were right, although I didn't believe you at the time  ;) As far as blades I used the $250 coupon I got for showing up to buy a box of 10 blades, plus the mill came with one. I plan on using the Resharp service for now.

Norm: I'll have to try to focus on both at the same time. ;)

thecfarm: Yes it will keep me off the streets, I'd much rather be sawing. :)

hoofer: Yes, this is what I want to be doing. I can't believe it is happening though. It's gonna be great when I finally get it. 8)

It's funny when I tell some of my friends that I bought a sawmill. The responses range from "What's a sawmill?" to "What the heck do you need that for?" and there were a few that complained about killing trees. I just had to explain to them all that I love it and money can be made from it. Some people make art for a hobby, well, I sawmill. (Is that an art form?)

Good show TY!

I know what it's like to "finally" own a mill.  I've only owned one for almost a year now and it's great.  Before that, I used my FIL's!
I left word with WM at Hanabal,NY that I was looking for a hydraulic mill if the price was right and about a year later I got a call from "petefrombearswamp" (who was upgrading) and our deal was made.  The feeling is hard to explain.

You, being a 19yo young man are our future!  You've made that first big important step.  Congratulations!

Chuck

I am envious...

I would love to have an LT10

That is awesome.  You best build your Mom something nice too.

Since folks are making suggestions about your future and hydraulics and such.  Let me add to it and give relationship advice.  If the redhead wants to help cut, off load and stack the red oak.  Ask her to marry you. ;D ;D

Snowman: If you would've told me a few years ago that I would be doing this by my own free will, and enjoying it, I'd tell you you were crazy. :D
But now I really enjoy it, and when people ask me if I workout I say no, I cut wood. I really enjoy seeing an ugly log turn into beautiful lumber, and the workout is a bonus.  :)

Bull: The answer: I'm gonna own a milling business when I get older.  :)

Captain: What was the name of the young man? I don't know of anyone my age that has a sawmill, or is even interested in it.

fishpharmer: For my mom I plan on using it to reside our barn with tulip poplar. :) And of course I can use wood I cut from it to make other things for her. I agree with having a woman that wants to help. Actually she has blonde hair, and I have yet to ask her if she would do that.  ;) :D

I plan on sawing some 2x4's 2x6's, etc., to use to build a solar kiln, unless I find a good deal on a dehumidifying or other type. That's probably a ways in the future though.  :)

I have allways aimed at the R/sawn green and recycled contract milling myself we use to also mill all the timber for the building co dad and i had for a fair while  ;D Ive been getting back into alot of wholesale work latley  ;D in the past  when ive had larger orders 4000 bft + of one size or profile i cart it to a large timber training center 60 mile away and they do contract drying or machining for me as i think its better than tying capital up in that side of the buissness untill im processing a large enough vol to justify it Mate  ;) ;D ;D

Yes. I am try more for the end product. I mostly do custom work. I do buy logs and sell the lumber to flooring companies and some exporters but I have had problems lately getting PO#. Flooring companies are buying very little right now and what you can sell you get very little for. Ties and pallet are about the only thing selling right now.  >:(

A lot of local businesses just throw them pallets away. I know a fellow that goes and picks them up for free and sells them back to a local food processor.  "Oh, I just want them for firewood", when asked what he's using them for. :D :D

Gday

Teen sorry to hear things are slowing down abit there Mate I had a pretty tough runn myself for the past 18 months (long story ::) :( ) and things have been picking up since the start of the year Mate  ;) ;D ;D ;D . Anything worth while is never Easy Mate  ;) ;D ;D ;)

Im doing pallets at the moment  ::) fair to good money for the effort  ;) ;D Looong days Tho  for a one man band ;) :D ;D  150 + per week @ $20 ea  and repair on about another 40 to 50 p/week at about 4.50 to 6.60 ea but thats only replacing 1 to 2 deck boards  ;) + i only have to saw about 4000 bft per week and only use about $800 worth of pine logs $150 worth of nails n paint as they are stenciled with the co logo  and roughly $ 140 bucks worth of fuel that incud's mill, loader and the fuel for the tray truck doing the del a 50 mile round trip so i clear about $2 k per week  ;D ;D before the tax man hits me up   :o ::) ::) :(  ;) :D ;D

I just got offered a job yesterday to do 4000 extra H/duty concrete products skidds/pallets but they wil be worth around the $40 ea mark but i havent finnished the pricing and quote on  this job It will be spread out over about 6 months so i should be able to fit it in  ;) ;D 8)

Im also going over to pick up a semi auto pallet line that ive had in storage for about 4 years in the next few weeks

I also Saw some pine sleepers/ties 8x2 8x3 and 8x4"s 8,9 and 10 ' long for a treatment co in melbourne  but i have enough logs in the yard to do about 10mbft so ill have to decide soon which way im heading either pallets or ties in the next 8 weeks when ill run out of the 12 ' pallet logs i have in stock  ;) ;D
I also have about 100mbft of Cypres pine sawlog coming in in the next 3 to 4 weeks  :o :) :) ;) ;D ;D 8) So im going to have to put a couple of blokes on Verry soon  ;) ;D one on the mill fulltime with me and one building pallets parttime
The Cypress is high value timber as its worth a min of $1.55 wholesale to $3.00 a bft

The only thing i dont like about doing the pallets is cutting Inch boards on the Lucas as it slows me down to around the 200 bft an hour on my own  mark esp on the 4x1s   ::) :(

SD I know a couple of blokes that are doing that one here   ;) :D but the trick is to stay small as they cotton on to you and your supply drys up   :o ::) :( >:(  mate  ;)

Ty  only 2 sleeps to go now not long now Mate  ;) ;D How many ton of logs have you got down this week to get yourself going Mate  ;) :D ;D ;D ;D 8) 8)

So far I have a 20" x 40' walnut (that I will have to split into shorter lengths, of course :D)
2 22"x10' Hickory logs,
18"x8' Boxelder that looks like it might have some nice figure in it
a Big old Walnut that looks like it has some burls in it, and it has a nice crotch on one end
2 20"x10' honey locust logs
a 24"x10' Ash, that I'll probably have to trim a little to get on the mill.

I've been acquiring these over the last couple months, I've got them in a nice row (up off the ground of course) so I can put the mill next to them and roll em up on it. I have enough woods that a tree now and then doesn't make much of a dent. (Of course I'm trying to practice good conservation)

Yep got an old barn that could use new siding, and a large stand of tulip poplars. I'll get around to it eventually. :)
Chris, building a shed for my lumber and mill sounds better all the time. ;)

We went and picked it up today like I mentioned before, and I just got started putting it together. :D The hardest part was finding the 14' beams to put it on! I finally was able to find some old beams that were fairly straight left over from who knows what. I should have it finished and ready to go tomorrow.

Unfortunately it is supposed to rain tomorrow, and it was warm today so things got soggy real fast. Luckily I have room to put it together in my workshop/polebarn. And, it came with the head already assembled, I just have to put the rails together and put the lube bottle on.

Hopefully the rain holds off so I can use it, if only a little!

Edit: TheWoodsman, what'd you get?

Sawing is an incurable sickness and I am as sick as it gets!

Gday

Yeah they are a bit close for comfort  ;) the Big One started only 30 odd miles away to the south of us but is  heading NE of us Its wiped  out 800 plus homes and the death toll is up to 110 allready  :( :'(  6 towns just about wiped of the map 80 to 100% of buildings gone and its gonna get a hell of alot worse as the Cfa has'nt got into alot of places yet to search for survivors  its burnt about 500000 acres since sat night  :o 6 large fires are still out of control
The shocking thing is that i think the death toll will rise to the 2 to 300 mark and may even pass that  :) :) :o :o :( :'( :'( as there where alot of ppl that lived in that region as it was close to melbourne which gave them a false sence of secuity and where under prepeared for what was comming even with all the Warnings that where given buy the CFA You cant live on a bush block Overhere without keeping it clear of fuel and having a good fire gear and Plan  :) :o :o ::)

I cant get hold of Rod one of my customers who lived in marysville  :o :) :)   2 sawmillers and a couple of logging contractors i know around there its also 7 sawmills burnt down that i know of and 2 Pine plantations that i was going to log at a later date have been fire killed so there will be about 20000 ton of salvage there and probley about 2  million ton allup  of Salvage to be done in that area alone as there are alot of private and company owned plantations in the affected area

Im on call to go up and drive a D6 cat with open canopy  pushing trees over and making fire breaks infront of the fire on a mates dozer  ;) but he has afew of us to call on  ;) ;D there are allready about 50 dozers working around the clock at the moment

Yep Chris I had to put the bed on timbers, I wish it had feet like the LT15, although it made it nice when I had to pull it out of the barn and into the field where I'm sawing.

As some of you have deduced, it didn't rain today. ;D I didn't start cutting till later, but I still got the bigger honey locust milled up.
I'm addicted already  ;D ;D ;D ;D :o :D

I'm gonna see if I can get another one milled up tomorrow after school.  8)

Today gas one of those days.
The rains didn't come until late in the day, the red cedar logs were nice sized, the saws were sharp and cutting true, the sawyer never had to handle the wood, and the view from up on the mountain was good.

See Wood Mizer Way, spring 08 edition, page 14

That little building would be a good start for the LT-10.  I'd keep the roof gable running the direction of the sawmill rails and then you could add length to the working area, or even width, as time and money allow.

Oh yeah . . . . We need pics of the mill in action.  I don't think we can really believe you until we see PICS.   :D

Well guys I'm workin on getting some pics uploaded. Right now I only have pics of the mill from when I was assembling it and moving it, that I'm working on getting uploaded.
I started on the big Ash today (mainly just trimming it down so I don't have to mess with that tomorrow). Of course I forgot the camera, and when I was done it was too dark. I'll try to remember tomorrow. :)

As far as homework goes, I have plenty of time for that, since it gets dark so soon right now. ::)

Good thing I get the day off on Presidents day, I imagine I'll get a lot done then.  :)

I should have some pics up soon.

And TheWoodsman, I saw that building too, and it looks like a good idea. Except I would build it big enough to store lumber in. :)

Here's a couple I took today. The pile of lumber is honey locust. It's pretty clear and real pretty. And yes, I did put it on stickers after I took the picture. I didn't get to mill up the ash any more today.

Awesome!

Looks super.   What diameter is that log on the mill?  Looks big to me.

Congratulations. 8) 8)
Title: Re: Today was a great day..
Post by: tyb525 on February 10, 2009, 10:02:03 PM
It was 24" on the butt end, and probably around 20-22" on the small end (I didn't measure the small end). I had to do a bit of trimming with the chainsaw to get it between the posts and then had to do some cutting and turning on the mill to get the butt end small enough.

The LT10's max log diameter is 24", but the max. width cut is 17" I believe. I'm glad I got the 10 HP instead of the 7. 8)
I took a couple max-width cuts on the honey locust, and although I had to go slower, it still managed pretty good.
The thing I don't like is rolling logs onto it. Maybe it's just cause I'm not used to it, but I really don't like when I turn a cant or roll a big log onto it, it just sounds bad. :-\ I guess they were made to withstand that though. I try to be careful as possible though so I don't damage it.

I don't think I would want to mill a lot of 24" logs on this mill. 22" and smaller is a good size it seems.
So far it works great. ;D

Looks good TY
Congrats!
At you age you shouldn't have too many problems with the manual aspect of that mill
I expect to see post in a couple of years that you have up graded  to a hydraulic mill.
I had an LT 15 for about 3 weeks, but took it back to WM as I had trouble turning big cants. (especially a 22" X 10' Beech log)
I tried using my tractor to turn the big ones, but managed to knock the mill off of its foundation.
I was only 64 when I had that mill.
Purchased a used LT hydraulic which Chuck White bought from me last spring when I went wild and bought an LT 40SHDD51.
Wow! you must live in a "Banana belt" no snow.
Title: Re: Today was a great day..
Post by: Dodgy Loner on February 11, 2009, 01:20:03 PM
The biggest log my dad and I have sawed with our LT15 has been a red oak log 8' long, 25" on the small end, and 32+ on the big end (over 2000 lbs).  Turning it was no problem.  Anything too big for our mill can be hauled to my friend with the LT40.  Ignore the whispering in your ear about the hydraulic mill, Ty.  You've still got to get that woodshop fully outfitted ;D  You can cut more lumber on that LT10 in a year than you can use in a lifetime :).
Title: Re: Today was a great day..
Post by: tyb525 on February 11, 2009, 04:28:26 PM
I'm using a 48" cant hook and some boards to get them onto the mill, and flipping them with the cant hook. With my young age it's easy, even that ash wasn't too bad. :)

WDH: I do have a bucket of anchorseal, and I sealed all those logs with it right after I cut them. For some reason that Ash split anyway. Might be shake or something. I'll still get plenty of good lumber out of it.

petefrombearswamp: We had 9" of snow just a few days before, but it all melted on a warm day, then froze back up. ::)

As for hydraulics, that might come when I get older and want more volume. ;)
Title: Re: Today was a great day..
Post by: petefrom bearswamp on February 11, 2009, 05:10:42 PM
dodgy, the operative words are my Dad and I .
I saw alone a lot. hence the problem turning a 20" cant.
Ty, ash is a bear to saw, sometimes popping the end of the board slightly before the end.
I also use a lot of Anchorseal on ash it doesn't seem to help a lot..

I have to say, I admire the young man, for doing what he is, by himself, with no adults or experienced sawyers at his side.

Wish I could export him to work for me.

TY, you have my utmost respect for doing the sawmill thing. Your Mom HAS to be proud of you. Teen Swinger did just like you. He has my respect as well.

Please, know you are entering a dangerous time in your life. Logs can roll, unexpectedly. Blades can break. Lumber piles can fall, and you are out of sight of help.

I TRY to explain dangerous things to the guys that work with me. Most of the time, they do NOT listen. They hear me, just don't listen.

Anyway, have fun, be careful, and post LOTS of photos.  8) 8) 8) 8)

What can I say, when I first signed up I thought 16 sounded too young to be credible. I didn't originally expect to get this involved in the forum. I suppose I can change it to my real age. :D

And Hi Mom :D

On another note, I have one log left to saw. Got mixed feelings about that. :D

Does anyone know a good PPB spray. I know of Timbore, but I think there are others. I'm going to need it. For one, our barn has PPB in some of the beams, and I know they like the hickory and locust that I just milled. So I think I need to get some. We already have a 5 gallon backpack sprayer that we spray roundup with, and I believe it can be used for other sprays as well.

Thanks for your support FF members!

Ty, go to your Co-op or farm supply and get a product called Solubor.  It is the same thing as Timbor, at about 10% of the cost.  Do a search on the Drying and Processing board for more info about it. ;)

DanG, I guess you mix the solubor with water? Does it act as other borates and ward against all wood eatin critters and fungus? I must say the price si right. What is the mix ratio? I may get some and spray all my lumber before stickering.

Looks like a sabbatical to Australia is in order ;D.  I went there to look at logging in 2004 and fell in love with the place.  I was in the Tumut area and then on to Mt. Gambier.  Those folks really knew how to log!  I saw some of the old growth eucalypts in New South Wales, and my jaw dropped.  I also loved the meat pies :D.

Hi Ty.  I just now got around to reading this post, and would like to offer my belated "congrats" on your new mill!

Best of success to you as you start down this new path.  Thanks too for sharing your photo's; it's always great to see what others are doing.

DanG, I guess you mix the solubor with water? Does it act as other borates and ward against all wood eatin critters and fungus? I must say the price si right. What is the mix ratio? I may get some and spray all my lumber before stickering.

Okie, I strongly suggest you do that search I mentioned.  There is a ton of info there from two or three years ago, and I can't remember all of it.  I don't want to run the risk of misinforming you. ;)  Some of the folks who have actually used it may chime in here with some info.

Hey guys, y'all are gonna give Ty the big-head if ya don't watch it! :D :D  That ForestryForum hat appears to fit just fine right now.  What's gonna happen WHEN he saw's into his backstops and his head suddenly returns to its normal size? :o :D :D  Well, I think he's gonna tighten up the hatband and show us a picture of it, and he'll be able to join the "REAL Sawyer's Club."

OK Ty, I'm pokin' a little fun at ya here, just to remind you to poke a little fun at yourself now and then.  It makes your life a lot more fun. ;)

I have used it, but I really don't remember the recipe.  I do remember that I made a super-saturated solution with solubor, water and antifreeze.   I remember that I disolved the solubor in water and then heat the mix and kept adding solubor until it would not disolve in hot water.  I added enough water to get everything in solution and then added the antifreeze.  Not much antifreeze.  Maybe a couple cups in 3 gallons or so.  If I remember correctly, the AF is only needed if the wood is dry.  The borates are taken up better if the wood is still wet off of the saw.  If not, the AF serves as a wetting agent and keeps the wood wet longer.  I think the AF of choice is polyethylene (sp?) glycol.  It is the non-toxic AF.  I do think it works both as an anti-bug and anti-mold treatment.  It has kept the lumber in my shop bright and clean.

I would still do a search as the recipe I used was obtained here and I am sure I have forgotten something.

Don't let it worry ya, Ty.  This whole system is well designed.  What happens is, when ya are showing off and forget to check the stops, the excruciating sound of a band blade sawing metal will cause your heretofore swollen head to instantly shrink, and the hat will fall down, covering your red face. ;) 8) 8) ;D

Dan, Lucky for me, I have yet to hit anything other than wood. (knock on wood) I suppose that's because all the logs I've milled so far have been from the middle of the woods, away from people.

old joe, I am going to college (the one my mom works at. Free tuition!) I realize that I may not be able to make a living with it, but I'm sure I could still make a little side income. ;)

Ty, case and point her on what Jeff said.

I don't saw for the locals anymore I am internet only, but I *do* have some retired guys that actually need me. It's so cool to be needed. :) So I do saw for them. No charge they are always doing things for me so it works out.

My mill rarely breaks down. Rarely. But today, the first day in a long time, one of my old-timers calls and says he's in a tight for some cedar. I don't keep many cedar logs anymore have less than 50 in the yard at anytime. So I say come over and let's saw some logs. I have orders to fill and grand baby's to hold and a funeral to go to, but I say c-o-m-e o-n d-o-w-n . . .  just like Monty Hall. Never mind ask yer mom.

So anyway guess what happens in my extremely time-sensitive day? My mill breaks down at the WORST possible time. Broke the middle forward finger of the drum switch. Just snapped plumb off. So paraphrasing Jeff, it'll happen at the worst time demonstration or favor it don't matter.

Moral of the story? Don't sweat the small stuff. If that's the worst thing that ever happens to you - you are in high cotton lad. ;)

re: mill breakdown.

TT here's how to get your mill going temporarily until you can get around to replacing the drum switch. That broken finger is held in place by the same screw that attaches the wire lead, makes it feasible to replace just that one finger. Don't have a spare?? no sweat. If you examine the up-down drum switch closely, you will find one set of contacts that are closed when the up-down lever is in the neutral position. Steal that finger and use it to repair the fwd rev switch. Ill effect ?? Down travel will coast down a bit when you release the down switch. That set of contacts shorts across the up-down motor to act as an electrical brake.
That will get you going until you can build up the courage to replace the switch. If you have big hands like me, it ain't real easy.

PS, pull the ground cable off the battery before you go messing around in there :o

tyb525,you will saw into the stops, but not for a while.Right now this all new to you,so you are learning and being real careful.Nothing is second nature yet,you have to check everything all the time. You're just getting use to the saw.Maybe 6 months you are getting better and better at this sawing. You know how to go faster, but you are still careful and not quite use to to all yet.A year from now you have it down pretty good now.You can really turn out some lumber and not really worry about much. You've been at this for a year now.You are doing great, things are becoming habit now.Don't even have to think about much anymore, just do it,it's all natural now.Check them stops all the time, before each cut.Yep,you checked them every time,10,000 times and no problem at all.Watch out for that 10,000 and one time, that metal sound you will never forget.Than we will let you into the secret club.  :D   :D

piney, we southerners have something in common. ... think it's called (S)outhern (I)ngenuity. ;)

I did rig it but in a way you might chuckle at. Or cringe. I secured a wire to the bottom of the forward center contact (two red wires theres like 18 gauge) and ran it through a toggle switch (did not hard-mount it) and  . . . .here's the really SI part .... cringe .... I used a plastic wire tie to secure it to the topside "common" finger of the rotating switch.

At first I didn't realize that particular contact had to be broken for reverse, so when I tried to reverse after my cut, it wouldn't. Keep in mind I had no schematic available. I have it, but was trying to get the job done and get to the funeral.

Of course there is no fuse in play for the carriage motor so that is something to be aware of. I like your SI fix, I just can't picture it totally without the switch or schematic in front of me.

Here are some more pictures....

From the distance, you can see our firewood cutting area.

An ugly walnut log, which turned out to have a little rot in the middle, but produced otherwise beautiful lumber.

A nice hickory log. I got this log free from an area where the power company cleared a lot of nice trees. This was the only one I brought home. I did mill a white oak and a maple on the spot with my cs mill.

And lastly, the stack of lumber I have milled. (Actually the lumber from the two locust logs is still stacked by the mill, as well as the walnut. I havent had time to sticker them yet, but they appear to be doing fine.)

Might I offer the suggestion to place your stickers a little closer together. Some of the lumber will do a dip on you at wide spacing especially on hardwood. I learned this the hard way. :(

Nice work, Ty, and I also envy your energy.  Heard a saying something to the effect that if I had the energy of youth and the wisdom of successful men, I'd certainly be rich, famous and healthy.  Unfortunately, I'm too old for the youthful energy and too hard headed to have acquired the wisdom which leaves me working twice as hard to make the same stupid mistakes over and over again... sure keeps the days interesting though.

and i agree with the pros even tho i was against further education for along time  as i dont think everyone should do it  ;) When i finnished my Cert 4 in Timber Industry Management  i was offerd a Scolrship for 5 years to get a Dctrt in Wood scinence from the head of the Csiro and I passed it up saying i didnt have Time to gain a qualification that i was never going to use  ::) But it is somthing I wish i had just done every so often   ??? but there was a 99.99% chance i wold never use it but it woulda looked Dang Nice hanging on the Office wall  tho ;) :D :D :D  8) 8)

With needing to take your hat down a notch or two once you have first Destrutive Epasode towards your Sawmill dont worry mate we have all done it before at some point  :D :D ;)  Like Jeff said its usually when some ones waching or when you start to get comfterble with the equipment like one of the blokes said dont pull the band back while its running and ill add if you need to reverse it if its become jamed or blunt in the cut cut yourself some wedges to use it makes the job ahell of alot easyer  ;) ;D ;D

With sticking out your timber i use the following spacings  ;) 1" @ 1' . 1. 1/2 @ 18" and 2" at 2' spacings and the bearers under the pack should be on solid ground or on two length way skids from 6x6 to 8x8 and with the bearers no farther apart than evey third row of sticks layed across thoes  ;) one of the most important things the vertical rows of sticks Must be in line for even weight distrabution  ;) For air drying Hardwood the barn is good but you will have to check to make sure you getting the rite amount of air circulation and pine will be fine out in the Yard as it needs more air cirulation as it has more free water in the cells  ;) ;D 8)

Although there's really no way to saw int the mill itself with a swingmill, you can still do things like knock into it with a loader, or drop a log on the rail. I've done both, for an aluminum machine that things pretty durable :D

Thank for the tips on the stickers guys. I don't think I'd seen them that close together before, but I'll remember that. :) I've sighted down the boards and they all look straight so far, but I'll see if I can't shove some more stickers in there without having to take the stack apart.
They are in line vertically @ 2' spacing, although it doesn't really look like it in the picture. It is sitting on 4 4x4s on level concrete. Hopefully the it will only be in the barn temporarily, until I can build a saw shed and/or a solar kiln (or dehumid., etc).

Once again thanks for your infinite knowledge guys. :)

ps: Radar, it's a northern tool Note:Please read the Forestry Forum's postion on this company 4ft with a fiberglass handle. I got it for Christmas from my dad, so I can't complain. 8) It's done everything I've needed it for so far, it bites into logs surprisingly well, usually on the first try. I hope to upgrade to a Logrite eventually. ;)

Here's a small  update...

Got it moved inside a few weeks ago.
After cutting some walnut.

I use my tractor to get the logs to the door (the doors to the outside are behind me in the picture, the doors behind the mill open to the rest of the barn). Then I use a comealong to pull the logs the rest of the way in. I'm gonna try to get a small winch to do this faster.

Ty,

you could get a snatch block and a choker cable (or a stout rope), and then use your tractor to pull them in by running the line through the snatch block and back to the tractor.

Make sure you have a good strong anchor point, though.

Looks like you're having a blast!

Looking good ty  ;) ;D you could also make up a low single axle trailer and bring 2 + logs in from the bush with depending on the size  the tractor then back it into the shed with the logs on it then just rool them down a sett of ramps onto the mill let gravity do abit of the work mate  ;) ;D ;D 8)

Ive i was working at a mill once and the mill up the road had upgraded to a new mill but the new layout didnt quite work with the way the shed was layed out so they left the old 7 wide by 18 long flattop carriage inplace and loaded the logs onto that then shifted the carriage up to being inline with the log deck then installed a big ram to push them of the flattop onto the deck the bloke in the yard just had to load them on then the sawyer looked after the rest  from the headsaw ;) ;D i would have just shifted the sawdust hopper from the start  ;) :D :D ;D ;)

Meadows, I've been thinking along the lines of the trailer. I know I have plenty of old farm equipment to make something up. The tractor is no problem, have a ~50 horse tractor for skidding the logs, it's just hard to back up with them :D. I would drive through with them but the tractor is too tall. ::)

On a side note, I pulled up 12 tulip poplars today, from about 15" to 24", (educated guess based in my saw bar, haven't actually measured with a tape yet yet), they're all 10 footers and came from 3 trees, which was surprising to me. I'll get some pictures up tomorrow.

I'm on spring break all this week, so you can guess what I'll be doing.  ;) :D

Those tulip poplar should be great fun to cut- when they're fresh, they saw like butter and the colors you find are amazing!  shame to use if for siding but it seems to work great for that.  I make benches and tables out of some and try to stabilize the texture and colors that develop naturally when I cut and plane- look unique to me but then I'm new at this part of the game...  Just remember all the advice on the forum about poplar for siding: keep it up from the ground and rain splash- it will rot fast at the bottom of the boards.

FD, he doesn't help with the mill. I make sure he's not near it while it's running or when I'm moving logs, just in case  ::)

Dan, I'll probably hear moans and groans for this, but Yes I felled those trees, very carefully! I've been doing a lot of reading on here and elsewhere concerning safely felling trees, and I don't do it if I have doubts. I make sure my mom knows where I'm at, and have her watch if possible. I always carry a cell phone when I'm out in the woods.

nas, the biggest log is 2'. :D

I get in your neck of the woods occasionally. If I am headed your direction I would be more than happy to lend a hand with you timber cutting. I've been at it for a long time (18 years) just remember to be safe and don't forget to look up. The only time I have been hurt is from limbs falling after the tree I was falling was already on the ground!!!!

Nobody should give you grief about it, but please do be careful :)

Have you read the info on the OSHA site?

Don't forget the PPE, either, hardhats are a very good idea.

I always wear a hardhat, safety glasses, steel toe boots, and chaps.
I haven't read the OSHA site but I'll do that.

Just like the lonewolf, I got smacked on the head by a limb about 2-3 " in diameter and 10 feet long that hung up after the tree that I was felling, fell.  The tree crashed down perfectly, hinge just right, everything by the book.  I stood back for about 15 seconds as the leaves were sprinkling down, then walked over to the butt of the tree.  Then WHAM! that limb hit me on the left half of the hardhat, glanced off the hardhat and hit my left shoulder.  I ended up with ringing ears and a nice tennis-ball-sized bruise on my shoulder.  Ugly one, too.  Without that hardhat to absorb the force, I would have experienced either a visit to the hospital or the coroner.  Anyone running a chainsaw cutting trees without a hardhat is uninformed, uneducated, or crazy.

Now, I always look up before and after I cut a tree, not just before.  It pains me to see so many pictures and videos of people operating chainsaws without any PPE.

You are doing good Ty by doing it right.

That was one fine stickering job 8) 8) tyb, you must have  a doctorate from the stickering and stacking school.

That sawdust do pile up don't it. You gonna need a sawdust blower. Unless you can pull a Tom Sawyer on little brother.. ;D

Cedarman, thank you :). The "trick" I use is to look straight down from above and line the sticker up with the ones below it. As you can see, it works pretty good, although it probably is a little slower than tossing them on there. I got pretty fast at it though.

The stack is 3 1/2' wide by the way, and as tall as I am (6')

piney, I see one of those in the near future ;D. for now I use a snow/scoop shovels and scoop it into a wheelbarrow every few logs. It's no big deal, and the price is right (free).

Also, what do ya'll use for stickers and how do you make them?
I have a lot of scrap pallet lumber (1x4 mostly), most of it is some kind of pine. I take those, cut them to about 4 ft long, and rip them to 1" wide with a 20 tooth rip blade on the tablesaw. It doesn't really matter the thickness of the wood if you always put the 1" dimension vertically. I can make a bunch up pretty quickly.

I've been kinda leery about cutting them on the sawmill, I guess just because I don't like the rougher surface it leaves.

Stand a few of them up, the 4" high, way, and run the sawmill blade through them. Make however many you have clamped, on every cut.

Make sure your stickers are dry, otherwise you get might sticker stain that will not plane out of the subject lumber.

I believe all of mine are. Most of the boards they're cut from have some kind of grade stamp on them that mentions they are kiln dried or heat-treated (whatever that means).

I am lazy when it comes to stickers. Whenever I get a flitch that is not good enough to make lumber, it goes in a pile. I will peridocally take a stack of them edgewise on the mill and slide off 1" strips. The better strips go into a pile beside the mill and the trash goes into the slab pile.  The better strips are cut to length with the chain saw. Good ones are used for stickers and the rest go into scrap. It is quicker for me to cut three stickers and throw two of them away than to selectively cut the lumber into stickers

All right!  Great!  Here is yet another example of someone who stickers wood that is pretty to look at.  My piles ................ don't look that way.  Good job Ty.

I was also going to congratulate you on the stickering job.  My piles don't look quit that nice, either :)

As far as cutting stickers, what I've found works best is to dry some 1" pine boards, then lay up 10 or 12 of them on the mill, side-by-side, and cut them 1" thick.  You can cut 100 stickers pretty quickly like that.  The rough surface makes no difference.

Gday

Its nice to see a pic of you Mate  ;) ;D 8)
Awsome job on the stickering there Ty  ;) ;D 8) 8) it could take me weeks to get a greenhorn to be able to stack timber like that mate  :o :) :) ::)   ;) :D :D :D ;)

But Just a side note tho Mate  ;)  the spacing just looks a little wide for 1" boards tho i space H/wood at 1' for inch for a guide just cut a couple of shorts at 12" for (1" thick) 18" =(1 1/2thick) and 24" =(2"or thicker) and you can just use them on the first layer to get things even and and started off right as You dont seem to have any dramas keeping them in a vertical line Mate  ;) ;D 8) be consistant with your spacing as it just might save some nasty supprises as it drys  ;) I dont want you feeling like im getting on your back about it tho Mate  ;) :D ;D ;D ;)

You would have just about cut enough now to cover the cost of the mill once its dryed  ;) just keep plugging away at it  ;) and keep up the good work Mate  ;) ;D 8) 8)

Chris, that's my downfall as I seem to space them too far apart sometimes. There are 7 stickers per layer, the boards are 10.5 ft long. 7/10.5=1' 6" ft spacing, minus about 2 inches on the ends, which mean the stickers would be a foot and a few inches apart. I try not to get that technical, it takes enough time to line them up vertically. :D

Chris, and everyone else, don't feel like you're getting on my back, I love learning new tricks and tips. :)
