Title: Oil and gas mixture for Stihl machine
Post by: alsayyed on February 25, 2006, 02:58:44 AM

Maybe this question has been asked before, but could not locate the exact answer. I get some confused when it comes to mixing 2 stroke oil and gas for the Stihl 650. I used to have the manual but I could find where did I place it? Could anybody tell me what is the ratio for oil and gas mixture for Stihl chainsaw machines.

Mix ratio for Stihl,40 to 1 as per Stihl.32 to 1 as per Al Smith.Take your pick ,both work well. 8)

For 2.5 US gallons that would be 8 oz per Stihl or 10 oz per Al Smith

I just buy a "6 pack" of premeasured oil ,in little bottles.Easy as pie,one bottle, one gallon.

Now then,if the next question is what brand of oil,my answer would be any brade of quality oil made for use in chainsaws. I have no interest in rekindling the "oil wars" that have circled the internet for several years.

Alsayyed

There's 128 oz in one gallon. So if you put in 1 oz oil it'd be 128 to 1. So 2 oz of oil would be 64 to 1 and 3 oz would be 42.6667 to 1 and to get 32 to 1 you'd use 4 oz of oil. Key would be to measure well since those oz's are small and hard to judge in big ( quart or gallon ) containers.

Everyone on this board emphasizes using good oil and most seem to run between 30 and 40 to 1 with a couple  running closer to 50 to 1 with good synthetic oil.

Good Luck

Thank you to everybody and I appreciate your answers. I was reading and Italian manual about a chain saw and it is use 50:1 ratio. Dose it mean use 50 liters of gas and 1 liter of oil. I am right or wrong.

alsayyed, that's correct.
There's a fuel/mix chart on my web site.
It says millimeters on the chart but it should be millileters.

Stihl recomends 50:1 when using stihl oil, and 25:1 when using other brands. Stihl oil also has a fuel stabilizer in it. You are not doing yourself any favors by mixing too rich as this will reduce performance, and cause excessive carbon build up. You should also use premium gas, and a lot of folks preach octane boost for cooler running which in theory is fine but so many products on the market are BS and it just creats one more unnessary mixing hassel.  Follow the mfgr rec. for any given saw and you should be fine. If it says Stihl oil at 50:1, run Stihl oil at 50:1. Thats 128 (ounces in a gallon) devided by 50 which equals 2.56 or 2.6 ounces of oil per gallon. if you buy the 6 packs of "50:1" stihl oil this shouldnt be an issue, and they are convenient. When in doubt, do the math. ;D
