Title: Wampus Cat!
Post by: DanG on January 23, 2005, 11:35:28 PM
I know that you snow-bound types have your Sasquatch, which is a fearsome beast if ever there was one.  But we are "blessed" with a creature that bring's new meaning to the term, "terror."  The Wampus Cat is sort of half cat, half something else, maybe man, maybe monkey...nobody really know's. ???  Few men have ever seen one, at least those men that are still around to tell about it. But some of us have heard the Wampus Cat scream in the swamp, an eerie, half-mournful, half-angry cry that can be heard for miles!  It is the kind of sound that make's the hair on the back of your head stand up, so it pushes your cap down over your eyes. I figger this is a natural, protective feature of the human body, so's you won't have ta look at something you will never be able to get out of your mind. The Good Lord is wise about that sort of thing, and that's why he gave us the ball cap.  Anyway, Wampus Cats are large, as swamp critters go, and when they stand up on two legs, they are close to six feet tall. They can run on two legs or four, and on dry land, they can catch anything, running on four legs. In the shallow water of the swamps, I hear that they will get up on their two hind legs and can just about run across the top of the water! I know I'd sure hate to come face to face with one of'em, anywhere! :o

There's a place up on Lake Seminole, where old Jack Wingate has built a lodge with a marina, a restaurant, a campground, and all sorts of stuff.  Tom and Gael went there with me to enjoy catfish and fried chicken, and, of course, grits when they visited last year.  Among the stuff ol' Jack has accumulated is the mounted head of a Wampus Cat that he encountered in the swamp, there, before Lake Seminole was a lake.  Jack won't say exactly how he came to get the best of that Wampus Cat, his eyes just go kinda funny when ya ask him about it. The head sets right next to the cash register, probably so nobody will even think about walking out without paying. I mean, if you knew that the man behind the counter was the one that kilt this thing, would you try to double-cross him?
This is the only Wampus Cat I've ever actually seen with my own two eyes, and I wanted to see if any of you have run across one in your part of the swamp.

I never saw one before, but, I've been warned about them since I was a little tyke in Cub Scouts.  You sure want to be careful walking out into the swamp in the night without plenty of protection, company and everybody knowing where you are. :P   I'm told that those things are ferocious.
