It's just been my personal experience that if you have the right hook geometry and it's sharp, The size of the actual hook doesn't need to vary that much. That said, I've used LogRite cant hooks and peaveys with our standard size hooks routinely on 36" to 40" logs. Bigger than that wouldn't fit on the WoodMizer so I haven't moved bigger logs around.

But, for you folks that just need something bigger, just leave it to ol' Kevie Boy. He's got something up his sleeve that is bound to satisfy your needs. Whether it makes it to production from the drawing board it a whole nother matter. :D

As our crack  Arkansaw R and D team works on this issue, the bean counters at the home office want to know how much would you be willing to pay for a 6 or 7 ft tool with a bigger hook?

That one at the fair looked about right.  At least a pattern!
I would rather have a Baker blue one then a PINK one.  ::) Orangey color is nice and would match my saw, hat and mill.

I have to get the biguns to the mill before I blow one so I do not have to move the chuncks very far. ; :o
If the 48" is $90 and the 60" is $100 then a 72" should be $120 with ARKY mod.  After all it will be the last one you buy till it is stolen.

If you have ever been bowed up on a log and the hook let go or the handle snap the pain will let you know that extra coin in your pocket is not worth it.  Wonder how much time I lost last year trying to move those dozen or so logs?  At $40 an hour I could have been making sawing I bet I lost the cost of several canthooks.  I bought one 60" hickory handle for one hook and I believe it was around $20 bucks.
Maybe I should become the Dealer for Arkansas or the Mid South region?

I am not to sure about that fiberglass Mississippi mud  handle as I have stepped in that black mess after it rained and it is slick and does not come off your boots very well.  A little sweat and a feller will never get a grip on it again.

Finally quit raining. Here's a couple of photos of "our" 2 cant hooks. The bigger-longer hook will grab a 36+ log, no problema. ;D ;D

Logrite this is my dilema.  I think Arky is on to a major point and I know I would buy one today if it was available.  I have dozens of logs on hand right now like the white oak in the picture. Note that 48" cant hook leaning againts the but of the log.  I cant budge this log bymyself with this cant hook.  The log is so big around I cnat get a bite on it at a point that offers me some leverage.

This is a close up of my cant hook.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

There are two schools of thought on how to grab a big log with a cant hook. At least as my understanding goes. Your mileage may vary.

One way involves trying to grab as much of the circumference of the log as you can. Not much regard to the physics involved. The simple term would be, the bigger the log, the bigger the hook you need. Wrap the hook as far around the log as you can and make sure you set the hook. Not many I've tried cause the hook to bury deeper as you apply torque to the handle.

The second way involves gripping the radius of the log. A little more thought goes into this. The hook geometry, the angle it enters the wood and the ability to bite the log for more grip as you put more pressure on the handle are all important factors. If you get it right, you don't really need a big hook for a big log, (I'm sure there is an exception to this.) It is like a pinching type grip on the log, like carrying a 6-pack. The two finger grip would be the same carrying a 6-pack vs. a 12-pack. Same concept, but you get the idea. The woodmizer only handles 36" logs, but I've moved them all day with our standard size hook.

If you look at a close-up of our hooks vs the wood-handle ones, you can see our hook geometry is a lot different.

Does this help?

Just a quick update from engineering. We have in the prototype stage an ARKY GRADE Cant Hook, it will have a 78" handle and a larger hook. This tool is intended for moving logs over 32" inches in Dia. up to 48"+or-

It will only be avalible in ARKY pink. :D

I will post pictures as soon as I get it built. then I will send it off to our Arkansaw proving grounds for finial review.

Kevin, we will need one out here on the West Coast where we have real Timber to move with a Pink Peavy.  Perhaps I could get the "Cow College" (Oregon State University) Forestry department to acquire a couple for the "girly" folks to use while in the woods.

If I used my signed version to move a log I could say "That log was so big It took more then 50 forum members to move it"

Still not to wild about the pink color but I do need the hook.
Talked to LogRite R&D on Friday and they have the proto type ready for testing.  It seems though that Kirk A has been moaning so much and since shipping is less it may get to him first for field testing.   ::)
Since it takes a bigger hook it requires more steel of better grade and temper to "get her done".
I also talked to LogRite about getting my Arkansas dealership.
