ideas for sorting saw chain
« on: November 05, 2017, 09:58:10 pm »
I have a collection of saw chain I have gathered over the years. I have both 50 and 58 gauge in the same pitch and DL count. very frustrating to think I'm carrying a spare chain and find out I have the wrong one.

has anyone come up with ideas for keeping separate gauges identified? I have thought of spray painting them different colors and just hoping enough sticks that I can see it after a couple hours cutting. anybody have a better idea?

I have a 2x4 screwed to the wall of the shop and placed timber tough screws in it to hang the chains on. Used and paint marker to mark the 2x4 for each type.  I did clean house a while back and tossed quite a few odd balls from saws long gone.

I sort my chainsaw chains by the saw they are for.

echo 310
expandit Pole saw
Ryobi 18v electric
homelite - electric
homelite 4618c - gas
husqvarna 45
jonsereds 81
poulan 1420 14 inch
Multitek 1610 EZ

and FYI i found that some of the saws have inter-changeable bars

Echo 310 and homelite UT43122B - electric
husqvarna 45 and homelite 4618c - gas
expandit Pole saw and Ryobi 18v electric

when i am in the woods i use a saw box i made
i added two additional pallet forks to make a "tractor pitchfork"

from left to right
mixed gas, plastic box for chains, bar oil quart, bar oil gallon, brush hat with veil, hammer

i use the brush hat with veil BACKWARDS so the veil covers my neck, thus stopping branches and leaves from going down my back  8)
