Any Ham Radio operators out there ?
« on: January 02, 2005, 04:41:32 pm »
Are any of you fellow loggers lisenced ham radio operators ?
I just got lisenced a few weeks ago and it is very interesting.
I can be just about anywhere in the woods and reach a repeater ( a tall tower and antenna which receives my siganl and retransmits it much further ) with a mobile rig if needed or just "shoot the breeze" on a lunch break. I've been many places in the woods where a cell phone or CB was useless but a ham radio would have been ideal.
Just curious. Might be somthing some of you might want to look into.

we had some radios  in the trucks for an outfit I worked for a couple of years ago I dont know what they are called in english but did not need a tower and they could transmit from 20 to 50 kilometers , those where way ahead of the cb when it came to logging in the winter on a one lane road with meeting places every 4 kilometers  ;D :)

Welcome to the Ham community Madman.   I've been a ham for just over 25 years, son in the Navy is a ham and wife also.   I operate on all bands from 160 thru the microwaves. But do mostly 2 meter repeaters during my hour and 15 minute commute each way to  and from the office down here in Northern VA.

What is your call sign?

stump jumper (Jeff) and I are tech no codes Jeff got his
5-12-97 KC8HJT and I got mine 6-17-97 KC8HVR.

We went to ham because of all of the BS on the regular CB it is to the point where you can't even have a cb on in the home if you have kids and you don't  even want to listen to it as an adult it's that bad.

Do you have an HT or mobile or Base Unit?  We run mobile units one in the house and one in the truck but we don't have them in operation at the moment.  We just have to hook up antennaes. We stick to the 2 meter and 440 (70cm).

Would be nice to know if we do have any more HAM operators out there on the Forum.

I have 2 mobiles, one in the car and one will be going in the house next week. I'm only on 2 meter now but may upgrade in the future.
My callsign is VE1MGA.
Do any of your local repeaters have an IRLP node ?
I'll have to check the website to see.
If so we may have to have a QSO sometime.
Amazing what can be done with 2 meter.
There are 3 in my area that I can reach mobile.
Good to see that there are lots of other hams on here.

I'm not a logger but I have been licensed for 29 years and my call is KS0G. I've been inactive for a long time but have been thinking about stringing up a dipole so I can work a little CW. My wife Cindy is N0JJW. My favorites were 20 meter CW and RTTY with the old mechanical teletype machines at 60 and 100 word per minute.

Yep, there's a few of us around.  Just renewed for another ten years.  Call is N1UHH, no-code technician.  Haven't been on the air for about four years but I used to do mostly just 2m and experimented with electronics and packet radio.  Also spent a LOT of time working field days in June.

I don't have HAM but I know someone who does and he's up at all hours of the night on it. He also goes to the states to pick up parts all the time. You can't even get in the house for all the loot this guy stores up and not all of it has to do with radio. ::) ;D

Mark,

Both my dad and I are and have been for about 15 years.

Worked mostly 2 meters, even worked upstate NY one night from MD with a 4 element beam:) Over Easter we were able to reach about 120 miles, I had a HT working a repeater on about an 1800' mountain and dad was using a 50 watt mobile/base with a discone at about 50' above ground, even the wife was impressed:)

Anyone out there have any experience setting up a repeater, I've been thinking about doing one for 440 but need to figure out how you go about tuning duplexers??

Great thread, I was going to start one my self and ta-da!!

isawlogs, I spent a lot of time on B.C. logging roads with those vhf "bush radios" Would not dare be without it.
When I as a kid I got into shortwave as my uncle, a radio tech, kept me supplied with receivers and parts, much to my mothers disgust. Strung an antenna  wire through the rafters of our summer cottage and a ground to a tent peg. I spent hours listening to Voice of America,  Radio Free Europe as well as ham broadcasts. Radio Moscow's english language broadcasts were ridiculous and a hoot to listen to.

Currently preparing to take Technician exam.

One limitation for some here might be the illegality of using amateur radio for any business purposes.

Our local repeater IRLP node # is 2050 (146.940 Mhz, 600 Khz negative offset) in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. My call sign is VE1 MGA and the name Mark.
I'm set up in the car, in the house and even throw the handheld in my back pack when I work in the woods, hunt, fish etc...
Link up and give a call sometime.
If I'm not around there is always someone on the repeater, it stays fairly busy.
73's.

 8) Just passed the test last night! I have purchased a 2m handheld, yaesu vx-150. I have been around different people who have communicated with them and became very interested. I don't have a callsign as of yet but hope to get ve9dks. I will confirm this here when I get it.

You may have heard or have one of these antenna's for your handheld but I thought I would post it here. http://www.atlanticwebpages.com/ve1ke/ This is the guy that issued me the test. He has sold hundreds of these all over the world. I got one from him and can't wait to try it out once the radio comes!

**UPDATE** I have since obtained my callsign of VE9DKS, and been on the air quite often on 2M. Really enjoying the hobby. I blew the PA in my HT and had it repaired, and is now on it's way back from Radioworld. Luckily a fellow ham loaned me his HT for a few days. If your ever in New Brunswick, give a call!

I don't have a licence yet, but plan to do it shortly.

I am a pilot and my hand held aircraft radio is also a 2m amateur transceiver, on quiet days I switch over to the 2m band and set it to scan that range of freq.'s, lots of neat stuff to listen to.

It's amazing what a 9" long flexible antennae will bring in from 6,000' up.  :D

Just bumping this topic to see if anyone else may be around. Recieved a new radio in October from my dear wife. Yaesu VX-170 HT. Nice working little unit. Now looking into a mobile and a base 2m. I am currently studying to upgrade to HF. I also spend some time on echolink. 256701 if anyone else uses echolink.

Well it has been a year since the last post on this thread so  I thought I would bump it up to see if we have any new members or old that have their license.

I now have a kenwood mobile rig and a Yaesu rig in the house for a base station. Driving a 11 element beam on a rotor on top of the house. Having lots of fun. Getting a Icom 706 for christmas and hope to be licensed for hf in the new year. Acuired a g5rv antenna to get started with..

Have had a ham ticket for many years but have not been active for some time. Don’t have any operative equipment at the present. Have thought about getting back on the air but there are just too many other things that keep me occupied.  Still have the ticket though.

I've been studying a bit to get my tech license. There was supposed to be a change in the questions as of July, 2006, so I got the newer book, too. The questions have gotten even easier. There was talk of getting rid of the code requirement for most licenses; I don't know if that change ever happened. I need to brush up (again) and go take the test. On sample tests, I usually get at least 32 out of 35, so I should be good to go.

I just wanted to jump in. I don't have a license but since I was a kid (long time ago) wanted to. The theory wasn't the problem but my fastest code was about 15 words. I had two old men who were very dear to me. W5DIJ and W5NWF. I think they got their licenses in about 1933. One worked code until he died. The other worked ssb mostly and I seem to remember 75 meters.  Being too lazy to pursue ham I resorted to C.B. back in the 60's. Both helped me designed beams.  Really good guys. I owe both a lot.

Glad this topic came back. My radio was in my old Tbird that laid down on me so, had to get some new wheels a 2001 Tundra. Now reading the Toyota book it says that installing a two way radio in it may mess up some of the electronics??
So I have been a little scared to put that radio in the rice truck. Anybody have any idea what it could mess up?
Love my truck don't wanna mess up nothing.

I have  50 watt 144/440 radios in both vehicles and a 100 HF rig in the truck.  The truck is a 2003 Ford F350 and the car is a 2005 Toyota Highlander.  I've had no interferience from either the vehicles into the radio or the radio into the vehicles.   All work fine without problems.   My "add-on" GPS in the truck causes some interference on select frequencies to the 2 meter band.

I have been having some fun with my new Yaesu FT-2800M mobile rig in the car... It as a 65 watt max output, which makes the difference in some of those hard spots. Really like operating 2 Meters, fun to see how far you can get from the high ground. Working on building a 3 element portable beam for playing around with.

My dad and my cousin got licensed at the same time years ago, one is KA0ZPM and the other KA0ZPN don't remember for sure who is who, but I remember when dad set up his base radio and would listen for hours trying to write down and keep up with the morse code.  He was a radio operator in the army so he did pretty good, I couldn't even begin to.

I haven't been active in decades, w5aqm and dl4eb. Got stationed at an isolated base in germany, not much to do and no money, so I got my german ticket and had dad ship my stuff. We had an old buss body out behind the barracks, long wire antennas strung all over the place. Arranging a phone patch back to the states was good for lots of brownie points..

I had a license back when I was 14 or so. My sign as a novice was WN8ZLL, if I recall correctly. It may have been switched to WB8ZLL sometime down the road. Novices were limited to Morse Code only back then. Is that still the case, or have things changed?

I've often thought about getting back in to it, but it's been 35 years... and I've got too many expensive hobbies already.
