saw overheats
« on: November 16, 2004, 02:02:36 pm »
After i use my stihl 044 for a couple minutes under load cutting a 25" log the saw shuts off either once i done cutting the log or in the cut.

The muffler has smoke coming out of it and the engine is hot.

Took the saw to my stihl dealer and they had no over heating and said it seem fine.

I noticed next to the spark plug there is a black cover that goes over a hole next to the carb. there is summer setting closed and winter setting opened.

The setting was on the winter opened.

If i close this to summner setting do you think the overheating was caused by it being opened on the winter setting.

My MS460 has a winter and summer setting on the inside of the air filter / spark plug cover.  The idea of the change is to draw pre-warmed air from around the motor housing in the winter, and to draw fresh cooler air from the outside environment during the summer months.  I would say that if you were running your saw on the winter setting during the summer months, this definitely wouldn't aid in the cooling process.  Change it over and see if the problem is rectified!

This may be a long shot but when was the last time that you cleaned the cylinder cooling fins? Remove the starter rope cover and look inside onto the cylinder. See if their is sawdust covering the cooling fins. Maybie a lean mixture? I hope this may help, Ken

You might want to try a different two stroke mix what brand and ratio are you using I would try a synthetic oil like amsoil oil or equivilant.
Two Things in life to be proud of a good wife and a good saw.
