EPS Foam
« on: August 17, 2004, 07:07:36 pm »
I have access to some aluminum skinned foam panels with eps foam for the core. Is the eps ok for kiln walls ? I think someone said that it absorbed moisture  too much.                         Thanks Tom

Aluminum skinned EPS panels almost always fail when used in kilns. The aluminum expands and contracts and then comes unglued from the foam. However, foam-in-place urethane insulated panels stand up well but stainless steel is better than aluminum because of the big difference in thermal expansion. Glued aluminum/urethane panels should be avoided just like  the EPS /aluminum panels. We did an aluminum urethane glued panel kiln once about 15-20 years ago and after a few months the skins peeled off like a banana. The whole thing had to be redone. We use glued up panels in doors but they are completely framed so that we are not depending on the glue. The glue always lets go over time.
