Yep, its not a good thing cause I dont know nothing about them 'cept I like old stuff.

Could not pass this up for a 20 dollar bill. It came from an estate sale and seems to be well maintained. It says Sears, could it be an old clinton? It turns over, has compression, chain looks almost new, inside of tanks are extremely clean although it does ahve some gas and bar oil in it yet. I have not tried to start it. Can you guys help me figure out what I have so I know what gas mix, etc, before I try to do anything with it?

Most of dem old saws were heavy on da mix. Usually 16/1

Being a sears tool, it could be just about anyones. It looks very much like an old Diston I worked on for a guy.

Hi to Jeff B. Don't know for sure what your saw is but, if you want to go to Mike Acres website: www.acresinternet.com and click on the brouse saw tab and go to Craftsman, you might find your saw. If you know the model number you could find it easier. Give it a try. lonebear30....

Well, don't believe it's a Barker. According to Mike's site if its a Clinton (D-35) the oil mix ratio is 16/1 or 8oz. of oil/gallon of gas. Some of my old saws call for 16/1 and I run them at 32/1 mix using Mobil 1, MX2T synthetic oil. With the newer more improved oils that are made today, I have no problems running at 32/1 ratios and all my old saws seem to run just fine. Just note that I'm just starting and runnig occasionally, for people to see and not actually using them to cut wood. Although I think they would also work fine during that process also using that oil and mix ratios. Take care. lonebear30.

When I get a chance I'll check the saw closer for numbers. It looks now like maybe parts are missing. Chet says its missing a cover, but I cant figure out how it would have been on there.

I think it is a Power Products saw. Those were very strong motors and used in go karts of the bygone era. It does not look like it is missing any covers to me. Those old saws had the chain and sprocket hanging out for all the world to see. Mike

This looks similar to a David Bradley made for Sears after they bought them out.

I'm guessing it's either a a Clinton, a Barker, David Bradley, or possibly an old Sears chainsaw.

Reminded me of when I was a teenager building a '33 Ford hotrod.

The old-timer mechanic dropped by and proceeded to put his hand on each of the flathead V8 sparkplugs, commenting, in turn, that's good, that's good, that's not as good, etc.

I tried it and jumped back so fast I almost dislocated my shoulder!

Reminds me of the time I inadvertantly touched one of the plug wires coming out of the mag on my JD 12A combine engine. WOW

My Grandpa Bob never used an electric fence tester he'd just touch it. He could hold on to it and say it wasn't working so someone else would try it. I did it once

Did ya ever figure out just what saw you have

I picked one up yesterday that looks a lot like it, but it is a CRAFTSMAN (SEARS ROEBUCK & CO.) model: 917.60051 with the gear reduction.
Gave a 20 for it as well!

If you know the model #, you might just find the owners manual & IPL at Sears.com. Find the parts (I think) button, which is easy to overlook. Once you're in the parts section I believe that there's a search function. I was really surprised when I found the IPL for my old David Bradley.

Reading about testing spark plugs that way reminds me of an old electrician who was working on a job that I was putting up knee walls on, converting a walk in attic space into a 3rd bedroom. As I walked by he was testing the circuit by taking the wire and quickly running it across the back of his hand. His hand was all scared up. I said something smart like "they make testers for that" to which his reply was that he always tested for power that way up thru 240 volts but not 3 phase. He said his hand never fails to find if it is hot but he has had testers that failed. I guess it worked because he was probably in his late 60's. ( or maybe in his 30's but looked older because of the effect of the shocks to his system)
