Sunbelt Ag Exposition Moultrie, Ga. 2004
« on: July 17, 2004, 04:40:28 pm »
Sunbelt Agricultural Exposition
Moultrie, Georgia
October 19-21, 2004

I sure hope that those who congregated here last year can make it again this year  We had a good time.

The Second day, Oct. 20th, is usually the best day.  The first day, many are still setting up.  The last day, many exhibitors are tearing down early (even though they aren't supposed to)

I plan to arrive the 19th and stay through the 20th.  If funds and schedule hold out I may even stay the third day. That's probably a stretch though.

Those who attend, we need to meet and visit again by late morning.  We should all try to go to lunch together at the Amish resturant, about $10.  Pairing off to visit the show is definitely allowed ;D  although perusing  enmase would be quite a spectacle. :D

I have a suggestion for a tentative meeting place.  Since Peterson Saws will be exhibiting as a company for the first time there, why don't we use them as the point of congregation.  We will be in the area of the other sponsors too so nobody should feel slighted.  Do you think that Teddles can stand the rowdiness? :D

They'll let me in.  I'm not so sure about Harold and Edward.  The woman clerk wouldn't let Edward and Harold stay in the same room. ??? :D :D

The real question is whether Shoney's will let us eat in their resurant again.  We put a hurtin' on their Grits Bar.   ;D

It is barely more than a month till the big show, now. Seems like we oughta engage in some serious chit-chat about it in hopes of getting some more folks interested in joining us there.
I plan to be there, hopefully for at least 2 of the 3 days, and maybe all 3. Of course, I may have to scale that back to one day due to the storm situation and my own financial outlook. I'm expecting a check in the mail on Oct 1 that should put that last part back on track. But, I was expecting that same check on Sept 1, too. If it don't make it this time, I may hafta hitchhike. :-/
Looks like we're going to have a good turnout of FF sponsors and participants there. I really look forward to meeting some of them. We also have several new members since last year that are within driving range. How 'bout it, guys? :)

Is it any closer to Tom's than to Moultrie ??? We got this BIG truck now, with a back seat and LEG ROOM. Gotta get some logging and sawing done so we can make it. Tom and I are going up one day, maybe next week and reserve rooms. I just gotta play with them Peterson's.  8) :D :D

We SHOULD be able to get at least 10 members to show up. It isn't all that far for a LOT of the members. I'm gonna try to remember to take a bag of grits for Hammond. He should be converted by the time he goes back down under. ;D ;D ;D

Atlanta might be about the same mileage if you are looking for an international flight.  Lots more auto traffic though. It's been said that "you have to go through Atlanta to get to Hell!"  It's the hub of the Southeast.

Jacksonville is a full service International Airport too, but smaller and fewer flights.  Auto traffic is minimum.

If you're flying your own private jet, ;D  , The Moultrie show is next door to the Moultrie Airport. 8)

Captain, it depends on what type of service you need. If you're just gonna fly in on an airliner and rent a car, Atlanta, Jacksonville or Tallahassee would fill the bill. If you're arriving on a private flight, just come in to Moultrie. The Expo is held at Spence Field, a retired AFB. It also serves as Moultrie's municipal Airport and industrial park. It's about a 15 minute walk from the flight line to the sawmill displays.

I was planning to be there till I found out it's in the middle of the week, I could take off from work but Linda can't take off from teaching as no subs are available, and I would like to take her to see if any interest could develop. According to yahoo maps it's a 7 hour drive. Wish there were a show closer to me, But i would like to meet all of you.
Been doing so much with so little for so long I can now do anything with nothing, except help from y'all!

That's great news, Rbarshaw! 8)  I'm glad you'll be able to make it. Too bad your Linda can't be there, but my Linda can't make it either. :-/

Accomodations are sparse in the Moultrie area, and the show is huge, so finding a room right there is out of the question. Tom and Harold are staying down at Valdosta. I'm sure they'll chime in here with the location.

Just a couple of tips:  Come prepared for any type of weather. I've been there when it was cold and windy, and other times it is really hot. October weather in S. Ga. is very fickle.  Wear some very comfy shoes. You WILL do a lot of walking. Travel light, but bring a camera. Use a fanny pack or knapsack to keep your goodies in. You want your hands to be free to "handle the merchandise." ;D  I suggest you approach the Expo grounds on hwy 33 from downtown Moultrie. I've tried it from all angles and have found this to be the least stressfull. Expect to creep along in traffic for 30 min to an hour just waiting to get parked. Check out the website  www.sunbeltexpo.com  for the location and other details.

I look forward to seeing you there. I will be there each afternoon, as I will be hauling in logs for the Peterson folks to saw each day.  The FF bunch will be checking in at the Peterson/Logrite booth.  BTW, the approach from downtown has you entering at the gate right next to the sawmill area. :)

Captain will be there, along with several members from NZ, doing the Peterson thing.  Along with them will be the Logrite bunch, all of whom are FF participants. Haven't heard if Sawmill-John is coming or not.

Rbarshaw, did you find a motel room, yet?  If not, I'd start looking from Tifton northward along I-75. Cordele, Perry, and Macon all have a good many motels. :)

I'll be sure to look for Tom. I also forgot to mention that Arthur Dyason of Eco-saw, who has been an active member, lately, will be there.  I spent a week stumbling around in his territory in 1969. I look forward to seeing him. 8)

Just got some bad news. :(  Neslrite(Kevin) and the Logrite folks won't be able to make it, personally. Kevin is shipping their tools to me, and I will turn them over to Captain at the show. The Cap'n can't bring them, because the Kiwi type folks have his truck. Geez, I hope they keep it on the RIGHT side of the road. ::) :o

I'm really excited to be playing a role in our sponsor's efforts at the Expo. This is gonna be a big week for me. 8) 8)

Tom, Harold, Ed, y'all might oughta bring a pair of work gloves with ya. There's gonna be logs to unload, and lumber to load every afternoon. It'll help yer appetite. ;D

Well, I could bring gloves, I guess. Problem is, I got 2 piles of gloves. I got a pile of left ones, and a pile of right ones. I don't know which pile to bring. ???

Well, did I ever have a splendid day at the Pre-Expo! ;D  I hauled a load of logs up there this morning. I arrived about 11am and found Chris and Hammond all set up and waiting for me. We were unloaded most quick. Ain't gravity a wonderful thing? ;D

While Hammond went off to find them some better accomodations, Chris and I headed to Cairo, Ga to get another load of logs. Don't tell Hammond, but we stopped off at a buffet house and filled our bellies to the brim, along the way. ;D  We made it to Cairo, and loaded a couple of tons of oak, then my logger buddy showed up. He made a quick phone call, and, PRESTO, the rest of our logs will be delivered to Moultrie, tomorrow afternoon!

When we got back, Captain had arrived, and was helping the D&L Double Cut folks unload their logs. Before you could wink twice, the D&L people, and maybe some of the Lucas folks were all over my trailer, and had it unloaded. I almost couldn't get out of the way fast enough! :o

I took along a little Juniper log for the guys to play with. By the time Chris and I got back from Cairo, Captain and Hammond had already sawed half of it. They were gentlemen about it, though, and saved the rest for Chris to saw. I think they kinda liked the stuff.  :D

I have Kevin's Logrite tools on the back of my truck. I'll get them up there, first thing in the morning.  :)

Also had a good look at the D&L Double Cut sawmill. It is an impressive machine. Essentially, it is like the Mobile Dimension mill on a four-poster design, but it uses some other refinements as well. That Kubota diesel really makes it sing! 8)

I was so busy, I didn't even think to take any pics. sorry :-[  I'll be sure to get some tomorrow.

Hello,
As most of you now know nobody from LogRite Tools will be making it to the show. After the success at the Paul Bunyon show we have been a little behind in production and felt that our energy would be best spent at the home front.
I would like to give a special thank you to captain for representing LogRite Tools and to DanG for bringing the demonstration tools to the show.
Once again it proves to me what a special place the Forestry Forum is!
So if you want to see one of our tools in action you can visit the Peterson Booth.
Sorry but there will be no brownies, I figured that if I sent along a pan of Tammy's brownies the chances of them making it to the show would be slim.

One down and two to go. We had a really nice first day at the Expo. The Peterson guys have cut a WHACK of nice oak for me, and I got to spend the whole afternoon with Tom. ;D  I got pics, but the Forum is acting up, and we got some really bad weather coming SOON! :o  Mucho lightning, and two tornadoes, so far. One going north of me and the other south. I gotta shut down. I'll check back in when it settles down.

Well, it stormed on into the night. Lots of lightning, some of it pretty close. It was one of those kind where the sky just stayed lit up for about a half-hour, with lightning flashes in every direction. There were reports of hail and tornadoes, but we got neither.

I'm gonna try to post a couple of Expo pics;

Here's Captain and Chris Browne inspecting my kitchen floor.

This one fellow has a unique way of photographing a dragsaw.

I also got to meet a gaggle of Tom's customers that just happened to spot him as they were passing by. Nice bunch of guys! :)

The pic upload seems to be working, so here's a couple more. :)

D&L Double Cut in action.

My Sister-in-law's neighbor brung us a WHACK of oak logs on his Metavic trailer. MAN that is a nice machine! 8)

The Expo folks were really good to us. I arrived just before noon with the Logrite tools. I asked at the gate about getting the packages in, so they dispatched a Chevy Avalanche to pick me up.  Tom and the Kiwis were surprised to see me and the tools pull up to the Peterson tent in a chauffuered limo! ;D :D  They helped us out again in the evening, when our log truck was late arriving. The gate was supposed to be locked by 6pm, but they held off till 7 for us. :)

Hope the weather holds. Doesn't look good. We went to the camp yesterday. One Pontoon on the Barge was underwater, along with the Yamama outboard. Got it raised and pumped out and even got the engine running.

Had a wicked storm to drive through in Daytona.

If you keep posting pics, yer gonna make me sick. I was dyin to go to that show.  Keep it up and get that house sawed out. Thanks for your help, Dan

We're really missing you and Ed, this week. Poor Tom had to eat the entire Shoney's Breakfast Bar by himself. You know that took a toll on him, as he couldn't even eat lunch! :D :D  We're keeping you in mind, though. We keep seeing neat things and saying, "Harold and Ed could build us one of those." ;D

We got lucky on the weather. Big T-storm slid by just to the north. We just got a little squirt out of it for a few minutes. I drove all the way home in rain, though. :-/  Looks like it has cleared up this morning. Hope it holds.

No problem, Pete. :)  I just put'em in the truck when I left, and took'em out when I got there. It really wasn't much trouble, at all. ;D

Had another great day at the Expo. Met a whole bunch of ForestryForum folks. I'm not gonna even try to list everybody, cause I'd be sure to miss one.  Took some more pix, but I'm too tired to post them right now.

Hauled home a big pile of oak lumber. Got an even bigger pile to haul tomorrow evening. ;D  Blew a trailer tire on the way home. :o :'(  Called a buddy and asked him if he knew anybody with a road service. He sent the guy that does his tires. He brought a decent used tire out there, about 20 miles out of town, installed it without even taking the wheel off the trailer. Charged me a grand total of forty-five bucks! I couldn't believe I got off that light!

Yep!  Old tractors galore.  They had an antique tractor parade at noon every day.  It was lots of fun.  You should have seen the John Deere with the steel wheels and spikes clonking along on the asphalt.  The tractor wasn't heavy enough to damage the asphalt but I'll bet the driver had a sore back and butt when he got home.

There was another of the little rear engine allis chalmers this year.  That made three.

When I  was at Spencer's I saw an old Plymouth tractor.  Didn't see any at the show though.  How rare is a Plymouth tractor?

Captain, it was good to visit with you.   I sure enjoyed seeing you and Chris and Hammond and Lindsey and Arthur and Nathan and Tom Stout.   Felt like I was surrounded by my kind of folks.

I love all the sawmills and would have no qualms owning any of them.  They all have their place and it does my heart good to see so many manufacturers be friendly with one another. It's a lot better than hearing a lot of cut-throat talk.

Look up the old tractors from last years show, fellows.   The same ones come every year.  There are some new ones now and again.  Two big John Deeres that could pull down the side of a building were there new this year.   There was a lot bigger showing of old engines too.  I sure hope that part of the show grows next year.  If so, it will be worth someone driving quite a distance to see.

I sure got taken care of at the Peterson tent real good.   Those young fellows wouldn't let me get into trouble and were always finding something for me sit on.  They hung around and kept me company too.  There was lots of good visiting and conversation. I felt like I was surrounded by my family.

DanG and I did some slow moseying around and sight-seeing too.  I know I was a drag but nobody let on like they minded.  What a great time I had.

The only thing I wished for was more Forestry Forum members.  You who didn't meke it sure missed a good visit and a good time. If you plan ahead for next year, it's worth a motel room for at least one night, if not two, just to be able to see the show and hang around the other members.  It's one of the few places to spend the day where you don't have to prove yourself to anyone.  Even the sittin' is fun. ;D :)

We missed Harold and Ed but understand and sure hate the tribulations they went through.  We all talked of them frequently and hope, know, that they will be with us next year.  I'm glad that there is a tomorrow because it gives us all an opportunity to see one another again.

Y'all sure make me happy. :D

The Plymouth tractor was built by the Fate-Root-Heath Corp.  Only 215 of these tractors built in 1934 were called Plymouths.  After losing the lawsuit filed by Chrysler they were renamed the Silver King :D  The Moultire Show has been moved towards the top of my list to attend.  Can't go wrong with antique iron and forest industry stuff all at the same place 8) 8)

Corley, I'd be plum tickled if you'd come down for the show, next year. All you other farmer types would get a kick out of it, too. The Forestry section is only a very small part of the Expo. In the spring, they have a mini-expo and demonstrate all the ground prep and planting stuff. Then at the big show, they harvest the several hundred acres of crops that they planted in the spring. They have tractor-drawn trams to take folks out to the fields to watch the harvest eqpt.
I think they must have every model of every brand of tractor made in the world today on display. Ever heard of a Johnson tractor? They gottem! ;)
We had a good representation of sawmills, too. There was Baker, Woodmizer, Peterson, Kasco, Hud-son, D&L Double Cut, Eco-saw, and Lucas, that I can remember. Usual participants that were absent this year were, T.A.Schmidd, Southern Saw, and Mobile Dimension.
Any of you that can possibly get down here next year, will be guaranteed a good time. :)

Yeah, TimberKing and Timber harvester and some others didn't show either.  I'd like to see that big band from Canada com back again. It was a two way cutting 6" band.  Wow!  Can't remember the name right off hand. Meadows was there last year too with a portable circle saw.

A couple of Toms. Tom_in_Mo on the left, and just a plain old, everyday, garden variety, regular Tom on the right.

Lindsay Flett of D&L Double Cut workin' the Eco-saw, with 2 Double Cuts in the background. The Bailey's/Lucas tent is that yeller and white thing. Looking back that way, there was sawmills about as far as ya could see. ;D

Lindsay helps Arthur sort out the Eco-Saw after it's long, long trip from Down Under.  This was a 15 year old mill that was in surprisingly good condition. Those space-frame beams are made of stainless steel. It looks like a good bet for use in remote areas, with it's simplicity of operation and durable construction.

Now that the show is over and everybody is back home. I would like to take a moment to thank Captain and DanG for their help, I would have loved to have gone but there was to much to do here. Captain told me that he sent a tool back with the Kiwi's if it made it there it will be our first tool to go to the southern hemisphere.
