Help-Need Antidote
« on: June 21, 2004, 08:08:53 pm »
Picked up my "new-to -me" MD fri, tinkered, lubed, repaired sharpened, studied til Sat PM then fired 'er up and watched the clamp, spring, washer and sleeve on the board return go into orbit- no problem- spare set in box of goodies that came with it, found clamp, got new spring, sleeve, wahser: install, start mill, lift lever  and watch parts go flying again. Found ALL parts-determine clamp has burr in threads so it ain't tightening on cable- throw clamp into orbit!  ::)Get new clamp , reassembled aand we is in business!  ;D ;D ;D
A few adjustments to speed and tracking/alignment 'n I'm having a ball!
Whacked up some free poplar, then some almost free cherry. This is more fun than I ever guessed! Screw that nailing wood together stuff- all I want to do is see whats in those logs now!
I don' even mind the tailing, the mill hands it to me! and NO edging! 8)
Went for a Sunday Creamie Cruise and kept looking at trees like a cat looking at the canary. ;)
I've always liked having lumber around- kinda like "money in the bank", but this is way more  8).
Hey thanks to all that encouraged and enlightened me on milling/MD mills.
Got to go - it's past my nap time; got to be rested to saw!

It is a wonderful feeling, ye Kasrl.  Sawdust is now running through your veins.  Each log is like a new book with the pasges being the boards.

 Suggestions:

develop a container for your smaller scrap separate from the larger pieces for firewoods.

develop a market for the smaller vs. the larger

consider purchasing a chipper for the smaller material rather than large burn piles for burning ( makrket the chips for ground cover etc.

Let me know if I can be of asistance in any way.

Thanks Frank! I could sure use money! ;) :D

A chipper eh? When we went to Springfield Loggers Show I looked at mills and wife (avid gardener) looked over chippers and grinders- shouldn't be too hard a sell.....

This is developing a life of it's own already- spent the day building racks for slabs for the outdoor boiler, bins for firewood  to go in kiln - all from stuff I sawed!!!
Started envisioning a roof over the mill, a bigger than plannned lumber shed- then started thinking about property taxes and decided on several small portable sheds....

Hey here's a question- how would you set up a log deck so that I don' have to jump over stuff to clamp my logs????Small hinged section like the old circle mills perhaps???

How 'bout sawdust - already fabricated a diverter for the main saw to keep some of the sawdust from blowing back to me and all over the engine- any ideas on easy handling/containment?

Gotta go - need to send out some bills to finance my new addiction.
Actually I have a 12 step program for this affliction- 4 steps to the loader, 4 steps to the slab pile, 4 steps to lumber pile. ;D ;D ;D

Karl;  next to not getting any money from Frank, sawdust is going to be your next biggest problem.  A super large vacumn will be a good investment.
