Grease Job
« on: May 01, 2004, 07:08:51 pm »
Western Farm has this listed on their web site.
It's a 90o fitting for a grease gun and I'm wondering if the top of this unit in the picture fits over the fitting?
Anyone seen one like it?
I have a couple of grease fittings that are tucked in behind chain sprockets and I only have about an inch to get in there with a grease gun.
It's major surgery to get the sprockets and chains off in order to grease the fittings.

Kevin,
Try a grease needle.  I have to use one on the baker.  It has 4 bearings that can only be reached by a needle.  It is a pain in the neck but gets the job done. NAPA or it's equivilant, has them.

Tom;
I need something at 90o and not much more than an inch long.
There wouldn't be enough space to get a needle in there.
The red thing in this picture is the grease fitting.

Kevin-
Rather than looking for a special grease gun nipple, why not just change out the zerk fitting for a 90* zerk?

Me being the ignorant sort, leaves me with a few questions.

Why would a manufacturer place a grease fitting where a grease gun cannot get to?  Is that plain stupidity on their part? Wouldn't you think that if they had a bearing that needed grease, they would design it so their customer could grease it with a standard grease gun?

Kevin, why don't you call the manufacturer and ask them to send you the grease gun fitting that will fit on that grease fitting that they crammed in there.  When they tell you they don't have one, then....just for kicks....ask them how they grease that fitting.  Should be interesting.   If they tell you that you have to disassemble the unit, ask them if that was a smart design.  I really think manufacturers should be notified on stuff like this or else they'll assume everyone is happy with their design.

Charlie, I'm afraid the one they would send would be over a thousand dollars if they even have one!

Rocky;
It's a pressed in fitting, if I got it out I'm not sure how I would get in there to replace it.
If I ever tear it apart I will certainly replace it, maybe sooner than later if I can't get any grease in there.

I had a piece of equipment a work that had a very similar setup. Because of the shape of the hub, even with a 90 degree zerk you still could not get to it. I drilled access holes through the sprockets to get to the fittings. I notice now that is the way the factory is sending them out.  ::)

These are a standard bearing flange that they use throughout the entire machine so I assume it's cheaper for them just to use the same one regardless of location.
I don't have room to get a drill in there to drill the sprocket.  :D

DanG Chet! You should've patented that idea. You'd be worth millions today. :D

Kevin, would it be possible to find a small nipple that has the same threads as that zerk fitting.  Take the zerk out and replace with the nipple. Then clamp a small rubber hose to the nipple that would run out to where you could get to it. Then clamp a zerk on the end of the hose. Would that work? :P

Charlie, it's a pressed in fitting.
The problem I might run into if I start fooling with it is not being able to replace it if I do get it out.
A small tube over the fitting with a hose clamp might work, I have never tried it.

Growing up in my father's gas station back in the 70's, they had a rack with dozens of boxes of nuts, bolts, washers and zerk fittings. Some of the zerk fiottings were standard thread but most were self-tapping. I watched the mechanic drill many items and simply screw the zerk fitting in the hole. I later did it myself on lawnmower and wheelbarrow wheels, etc.
The technology exists to fix your problem easily. If you took it into an old fashioned service station the mechanic could probably fix it up in less than 5 minutes. Your observation about a pressed in fitting is irrelevent.

Does the threaded fitting not require a threaded hole?

That might work Danny, thanks.
Brian, is that a pressed fitting, it looks like it.
I might be able to press one in using a flat bar and prying (gently) off the sprocket.

Kevin Harbor freight has a slide on right angle coupler that might just do the trick. Got to order one myself. Only problem with HF you never know how good the product is, but at 3.99 it may be worth a shot.

There is a special adaptor I have seen at my local parts store.  This fittings looks almost like a regualr grease gun end except it has a notch cut out on the side so it can slide on a grease zert at a 90 degree angle. I can get the part number or pick one up for you if you can't find one in your area.

I bought one like the harbor freight job but it didn't fit the fitting and they only had one size .
I'll try and get it to fit but I don't have high hopes of it working.

I have one of those adapters, I got it at NAPA. Just snaps on the end of your gun and then you snap it onto the fitting. Works well for drag links and balljoints.Stands about 1.5 inches high so I doubt you could get it into a 1" space.

What you need is an adapter they use for Chrysler FWD cars. It was a cut out on a straight piece of tube and you just slide it right over the zerk from the side. The adapter is only about 1/2 an inch tall. Only draw back is on a clogged up zerk you can not get enough pressue through it to open it up.

The tip I bought has a slot in the side where it fits over the fitting.
It has a nylon surface that slides over the top of the fitting but the one I bought didn't fit so I had to grind out the nylon, fabricate a new surface with plastic and even then the only way it would work is with a rigid tube from the gun.
What made matters worse is I had to stand on my head, hold a flashlight and grease the fitting all at the same time.
