found a wedge
« on: April 15, 2004, 04:27:26 pm »
Gave a couple bucks for this thing. Anybody have any info on what uses it might have served? Looks to me like it might have been used by someone who tops or climbs due to the place for a lanyard.

What's the scale of the artifact Jeff B? Looks like it was hammered on the left edge with all the metal beading up. What's the notch in the upper left?

Was it a wedge for a grub-hoe or pick-axe? You can make a wedge out of about any flat piece of metal and sharpen one end.

Its 6 inches long 3 inches wide across the blade and 3/4 inches thick at the butt. Mushroomed over from use. I feel it may be and old wedge used in tree topping to keep the saw (handsaw) from pinching. The hole was to tie it to you, the slots for the cord to go in when the wedge was in da tree

Steel felling wedges have a gentle taper usually long with a gradual taper where as splitting wedges have a steep taper and are shorter.

This has a very gradual taper. Definitely not for spitting.

I hear from some Sages that it might be a felling wedge used with handsaws in topping trees, Jeff.    Look for some Hand-saw marks on it.   ;D

They could be shim marks too.
Some of the felling wedges had shims with them.
They never let the heads mushroom on the felling wedges as a rule.

I have an old B/W picture someplace (can't find it) of my grandfather at a logging camp at Parker's Spur,  with the rest of the guys in front of a pulp pile holding their bucksaws and looking mean.  At least two out of the 12-15 guys in the picture have a wedge hanging from what looks like baling twine from their belts.  I think they did that just to not lose their wedges.  There's a couple feet of snow on the ground in the picture.............
Where the heck is my axe???

I'd be willing to bet the mushrooming happened later in this wedges life. After it quit being a felling tool.

They tried to keep the head clean in order to stack the wedges.
With smaller tops a shorter wedge could be used.
