That's a fine picture and two absolutely beautiful work horses. What kind are they? Belgiums or Percherons?  Their color is beautiful and they look like the best of buddies. 8)

Geeez, now I've got to do some studying. I don't know what Suffolk Punches are.  At the horse pulling contests around here, it's just Belgium and Percherons. :P

Curious as to how much food a day those working horses go through?  What do they eat?

Very nice looking team you've got there Horselogger, I took em out and showed Becky and she was impressed.

How big do Suffolks' get? I sure like the color. I think drafts have the best proportions of any breed out there, of course I may be biased.

Your horses are beautiful!  Especially the Belgiun Mare Patty. ;D  Over on the other thread you referred to the mare Patty and here I thought you were talking about me, and I thought isn't he cute, trying to be funny, talking about me as a mare.  Golly, I feel pretty stupid now.  ;D
I've never heard of a Suffold Punch, I'll have to go to Google and check them out.
Great photos, by the way.

See there??? We all knew you could do it :D :D

Very nice looking team. Brings back some fond memories of Grandaddy's team and the time he taught me to skid with 1 mare. THAT was comical.

Don'T ever stop posting pics. That helps to make this place even better. ;D ;) :D :D

Well thanks everybody, for the kind words! Suffolks are listed as serious or critical or watch or something like that by the breed conservatory, as I guess that as near as can be figured there are only about 2500 of them left worldwide :o Here in the midwest, we have a good scattering of small breeders, so they are not super rare. They are an average of 15-16hh, but very stout. My 2 bigger boys are 16&16.1hh and 1700# each. General rule of thumb feeding practices on these type horses will make them overweight. They were bred for centuries to be easy keepers and very docile. They are a genuine "farmers" horse from Suffolk county England, they have the oldest recorded breed history, tracing back to the 1600s. They were not used as a war horse like the Shires, as they were too small. One word that best describes these horses for most of their owners is honest. They are always willing to give me all they can. And thats all I can ask! They will eat a small square bale each and about 10 pounds of grain when working everyday, less hay when idle and grain a couple times a week just to keep it in their system. Here is another interesting horse I once owned. She is a imported Belgian Brabant mare, and yes she really is as big as she looks in the pic. She is 18hh and this is her second time in the harness ( that will get your heart pumpin, any thrill seekers out there) She was just too big to fit in to my set up, and a guy offered me double the already ridiculus amount of money I had tyed up in her anyway, so she was sold. The new owner used the same stud as I used on my Belgian mare and got a fine stout foal.

Very nice looking team and brood mare.   It almost makes me want to get into horse logging. :)   But, alas, I do not like the haying part any more.  I have had my time as a cowboy and horse wrangler.   However, Horselogger, I do envy you being able to work with such wonderful critters.    8)

Horselogger, thanks for the pictures and the education. That Belgium is a big horse, but so are the Suffolks. I got hooked on going to Horse Pulling Contest when I first moved to Minnesota in the early '70s.  If some of you people have never been to one, I highly recommend it.  It's a low key and quiet day watching some huge beautiful horses pull heavy weighted sleds for distance.  It takes teamwork to win and the two horses in the team have to start pulling at the same time or they can't pull the sled.  I've been told that a good pulling Belgian can cost over $20,000.  I don't know if that is a fact but I can believe it.  I've seen two unmatched horses (one smaller black horse with a bigger brown horse beat a beautiful and huge pair of dapple gray matched horses.  It ain't all in the looks, it's in the heart and desire of the horses and in the teamwork.
