I really need to hug Bill Gates,   All of the revisions in
operating system versions has created an unending job
for me keeping applications up and running every time
a new OS comes along.    I only need to have this continue
for another 6 or 7 years and then I can retire and
buy that new hydraulic mill and devote full time
to sawmilling.   8)

I went to buy a computer, ended up buying only something small like a cable, on the way back I saw my current 1971 F-100 4x4 looking sad and abandoned by the side of the road with a For Sale sign on it. Left a $100, came back in a week with another $750, and it was all mine! 8)

Of course since I had to flat bed it home, I knew it needed a lot of parts to get going ... about $3000 worth :-D

MY puter's a 75mhz, NOT 750, 75! It had windows 3.1 and worked ok, but someone tried to upgrade and put windows 95 on it. Not good! I have to use a barrowed puter to visit here.  ;) ;) It's a 750mhz!  ;D

I still have 2 other older computers I tinker on sometimes. One is 18 years old and the other is 11 years old. Both boot way faster than Windows and the OS doesn't crash.

I've had the pleasure (and displeasure) to work with most OS's. When windows XP came out we switched to it. If you have enough RAM it works great, a lot more stable than 98. I'm hoping they get the compatability issues worked out for Linux, works well for a web server but doesn't like most windows based programs.

The only way windows programs will work on Linux is to be ported to them. Linux certainly isn't intended to be a windows clone, its an alternative/replacement. ;)

Man Pentium 133 and 233 them things are basically extinct now. I have a rather nice 1 or 2 gig. CPU on my pc plus around 80 GB of hard drive space, a cd read write drive, and an auxillary hard drive thats about to go out the door if it dont start working right soon. I upgraded to this system recently after my laptop was ruined by someone who was too stupid to pick it up right.

I just built a new PC for a friend of mine.

P4 3.2GHz, 800 Mhz frontside bus, 512Mb DDR400 memory, Asus P4P800 deluxe motherboard, SATA 80Gb hard drive w/8Mb cashe, ATI Radion 9600 SE video card. The best thing is the 18" flat panel LCD. Pretty much all the latest and greatest for just under $1600. $600 was just for the 18" LCD.

Heck them old plentiums still have life as MP3 servers and whatnot.

I have one up and running, but not on line. Transferring info to it. The udder one is still in the box.  I think I will redo my office area before I put them in service. Gotta think on that for a while on how I want to do it. Its gotta be for next to nothin cause Tammy's kitchen ate all my tool man funds for the next couple years.

Yes, I been debating that. Not sure if my plans have changed or not yet. THe place looks completely differnt now with the kitchen, so I am contemplating the design as its all under the same ceiling.

Jeff:

Here, I'll decide fer ya. Just build that role top desk and give it to me when you change your mind whether it corresponds with your decore. And Corley if you go over to his place and team him a little bit, I may have it before next winter.

Aren't I a wise at-oh?
