Honest, I only wanted chalk
« on: February 15, 2004, 12:52:07 pm »
I'm making a small chalkboard for Tammys kitchen. I needed some chalkboard paint and some chalk so we headed for Houghton lake to the Walmart.  We were talking last week that I was going to need a new computer because my monitor is about history, and beleive it or not, everything I do, I am doing on a 233 processor.  Well, turns out wallyworld was having a clearence sale.  I went in for chalk and walked out with TWO computers. (Tammy said that they should match, since we are now working on the office area which is on the opposite side of the room from the kitchen, thats why two, plus her machine is 4 years ols, mine is 6)  They had 2.6 gig processors, 60 gig harddrive, 128mgs of ram, cd burners for $399.
So I ask, is that the opposite end of the scale or what? Go in for chalk and get a computer? :D (I still got the chalk)

Next time my blackboard needs chalk I'm going to the store with you.  Sounds like you got a super deal on those computers Jeff. I just bought a new hard drive on ebay and had to pay 75.00 for it alone.  Glad wallymart's treating someone good.

how in holy name did you do all this on that ol timer?
i think this is my seventh year for this pc
my monitor only has 2 colors, my keybord sticks the letters i,o,l,s,a,and r.  not to mention delete, spacebar, backspace and enter. (i retype many sentences) :D
have 2 cd burners, but can only use the floppy
went to  wallmart to get a cheapo keyboard(thought it      might speed up the day a little), turns out not a one would plug into my machine!
ill just keep pullin up the keys with my knife untill a less obselete keyboard or machine comes my way (hint hint) :D :D

Are you going to network them? The new, wireless systems are pretty slick. Garrett has Patti's computer in the house networked with my computer and his computer and Kelley's computer in the shop. Then on top of that, he made this thing out of a can called a cantennae. That links these computers with the computer in his house which is nearly a half a mile way. It's all one big ole computer.  :D

Jeff,

Next time you need chalk, just let me know. I have tons of it! Of course, then you wouldn't have gotten your new 'puters...

Congrats!

I bought a new PC couple of months ago for the same reason.  The monitor was dimming out and the box is 7 or 8 years old with Windows 95 on it.  When I got the new machine I ran a serial cable between the two to move stuff and the old monitor has been perfect.  Lot of frustration with the new machine whipping it into submission as it doesn’t want to run a lot of the old software.  Figured out some kind of work around for everything except the Colorado tape drive.  Really liked it as I had it set to back up the 95 machine every two weeks and I didn’t have to do any thinking. ;D

That is my worry. Incompatability of many of my programs not to mention my scanner and printer. Looks like the new machines have network cards installed. We have one set up on the checkerboard stump seeing what we can feed it right now.

Redpowerd,
They make an adapter to make one of those newer keyboards fit your computer.  Pretty expensive though.  Probably run you around $3-4. :D

Congrats on the computers!  That's a great deal.  Good luck on making all your stuff work on them.  Sometimes you can get updated drivers to make the older hardware work on the newer operating systems.  I've been thinking about a new computer has we've had this Dell a whole 4 years now.  It was fast when we got it with a 700 Pentium 3.  Maybe I'll keep it a while I hate to buy something that's obsolete as soon as it arrives ;).

I still have my 600 mhz Toshiba laptop after 3 years. I'de buy another in a heartbeat if this one ever dies. :)

I Prefer portability over desktop units because of database programming I do for others and good to take in the truck if I need to plot maps from my handheld GPS for folks in the field, or download GIS shapefiles onto the GPS . I use an invertor for power in the pickup and can take along a printer.

I really need to hug Bill Gates,   All of the revisions in
operating system versions has created an unending job
for me keeping applications up and running every time
a new OS comes along.    I only need to have this continue
for another 6 or 7 years and then I can retire and
buy that new hydraulic mill and devote full time
to sawmilling.   8)

I went to buy a computer, ended up buying only something small like a cable, on the way back I saw my current 1971 F-100 4x4 looking sad and abandoned by the side of the road with a For Sale sign on it. Left a $100, came back in a week with another $750, and it was all mine! 8)

Of course since I had to flat bed it home, I knew it needed a lot of parts to get going ... about $3000 worth :-D

MY puter's a 75mhz, NOT 750, 75! It had windows 3.1 and worked ok, but someone tried to upgrade and put windows 95 on it. Not good! I have to use a barrowed puter to visit here.  ;) ;) It's a 750mhz!  ;D

I still have 2 other older computers I tinker on sometimes. One is 18 years old and the other is 11 years old. Both boot way faster than Windows and the OS doesn't crash.

I've had the pleasure (and displeasure) to work with most OS's. When windows XP came out we switched to it. If you have enough RAM it works great, a lot more stable than 98. I'm hoping they get the compatability issues worked out for Linux, works well for a web server but doesn't like most windows based programs.

The only way windows programs will work on Linux is to be ported to them. Linux certainly isn't intended to be a windows clone, its an alternative/replacement. ;)

Man Pentium 133 and 233 them things are basically extinct now. I have a rather nice 1 or 2 gig. CPU on my pc plus around 80 GB of hard drive space, a cd read write drive, and an auxillary hard drive thats about to go out the door if it dont start working right soon. I upgraded to this system recently after my laptop was ruined by someone who was too stupid to pick it up right.

I just built a new PC for a friend of mine.

P4 3.2GHz, 800 Mhz frontside bus, 512Mb DDR400 memory, Asus P4P800 deluxe motherboard, SATA 80Gb hard drive w/8Mb cashe, ATI Radion 9600 SE video card. The best thing is the 18" flat panel LCD. Pretty much all the latest and greatest for just under $1600. $600 was just for the 18" LCD.

Heck them old plentiums still have life as MP3 servers and whatnot.

I have one up and running, but not on line. Transferring info to it. The udder one is still in the box.  I think I will redo my office area before I put them in service. Gotta think on that for a while on how I want to do it. Its gotta be for next to nothin cause Tammy's kitchen ate all my tool man funds for the next couple years.

Yes, I been debating that. Not sure if my plans have changed or not yet. THe place looks completely differnt now with the kitchen, so I am contemplating the design as its all under the same ceiling.
