Adding URL to search engines
« on: February 13, 2004, 02:08:41 pm »
Well I finally got around to starting my webpage. You can click on the house to see the start of it.  :)
I tried the search engine submission program that Jeff has on here but less than half of them worked the rest failed. I've also gone to a couple of other free submission sites.

Question is; do most of you use these free ones or do you pay some of the well known search engines like MSN. I've seen some prices over $200 for submitting and some less than that but are they worth it? Is there a way around besides just trying to track down the free ones?

I realize I need to spend money to advertise but at this point in the game, I don't have many options.  ::)

You only need to worry about a couple anymore. Most of them get thier info from google now. Remember, when you submit, there is a lot more to it then just submitting to get listed. It also can take months before you start to appear. what one did you use? the one on the page builder? Thats so obsolete its a wonder any of them went through.

Really the best way to do it is to go to each one find thier submit page and do it by hand.

I should add, and I dont mean to dis your site, cause it looks very good, but frames sites are very difficult to get listed correctly. I never build them for that reason. Only did one and it was my only search engine failure

;)  :D I fgured it a good idea to add that for some reason, now I know why.

Thanks for the tips Jeff. The frame page is actually the main page that comes up I think so I put my keywords and what not in that as well as the intro page. Will see how it works out, can always change format later.
Great site stump! Its fun playing around with this stuff once you get the hang of it.
I'm using Microsoft Word to build it and then a free program (shareware) to download to the server (Sympatico).

Lookin good Neil,  8) when you get a chance after getting the feel of it you'll want to change to just plain pages instead of frames.

I don't believe in paying for site submission, it's usually a rip off. Google will find your site soon enough on it's own. Bunch of other tricks to get it towards the top but not worth the money imo.

thanks Norm,
I think once I get a good grasp of this stuff I probably will change it. It would certainly be a lot less files to upload without the frame.

The main reason I wanted the frame index is so when someone clicks on a favorite site, say, the Forestry Forum  ;), my index is still there to the left and they dont'
forget about me  :'(.

Actually, having someones elses site open up within your frames has been deemed a violation of copyright in actual extreme court cases. It don't bother me, but you should know that and it is an irriatant to some people. The best way to not be forgotten and the savest is to have your links open in a new browser window. That way you are still there. All you do is add target="_blank" within your anchor tag.

Neil:

Don't be taken in by sites that ask you to pay for your site submission, its just a money scam. If you list your site at places like I'm listing below they'll be in the major search engines in no time. That's what I did. And you'll also get hits from the forum.

http://www.onsearch.ca/

http://www.listingsontario.com/
goto bottom of page and add/modify listing

oops thought you were in BC untill I checked your profile ;)

Like SwampDonkey says. Dont waste money on paid subscriptions. Do the home work, learn hot to optimize your pages for searching, learn about meta tags and you will get listed. I have been VERY successful with listing webs for my clients. I never make promises to them about how we will do, but we always, (except that frams page :o) do pretty well and I have never paid a dime to get listed, just spent a lot of hours.

Thanks for the links SD

Thanks Jeff, just submitting manually to any I find along the way. Amazing how many search engines there are. Also started on my new pages without frames today. Quit smoking so I gotta keep my hands busy now.  :)

Cheers Neil

Happy web building.

To add my personal preferences here:

I love Macromedia's Dreamweaver MX 2004 for web building, and you can download a 30 day free trial from their website. They have excellent support and user forums. Might be slow retrieving with dialup. You can view your code and page view  in split view if you like. It has alot of extensions, and a ftp client for updating your site. You can d/l extensions from other site for free as well as from Macromedia's site. I also use their Fireworks and Freehand software for images and vector based drawings, respectively. I tried Golive from Adobe, that was a nightware to say the least. :)
