I was covered in pink yesterday...  holy moly!  Almost need a mask sawing on this machine.  So far that is one of the only con's I found with the EZ boardwalk JR -  all the controls and handle are same side that the dust comes out (cough cough)...  Makes it hard to breath.

This will help, but not cure the red dust problem. Automotive 12 volt radiator fan fastened to a 1X4 bolted to the mill head. It blows downward...

No, you do not "almost" need a dust mask.  You absolutely need a dust mask.  Do yourself and your family a favor and do not saw without one.  Dust Mask Link Other safety items include: Steel toe boots, gloves, eye and ear protection.

Hah Ozarkian, busted by the safety police! MM is right about the dust masks, most sawdust is a carcinogen. I'm bad at not wearing the eye protection and steel toe boots when I should, but ear protection- that has been beaten into me over the last 15 yrs. operating a commercial printing press. If you want to hear LOUD, those things will make your ears ring for a week!

Operating a commercial printing press is what I do for my real job. And they are loud. What kind did you run eastberkshirecustoms?

Hey, a fellow printer! Good to meet you. My primary presses were Heidelberg M-130's, 8 unit double web, 40" wide. I also have experience on the Harris M-110 (mini-web) and the old Hantscho Mark IV and Mark V (dinosaur) presses. I was 'put out to paster' due to the economy.  As you know, printing is a very competitive and cut-throat (and dying) industry. I could get another First Pressman job tomorrow, if I wanted to relocate. I have been offered a job in Vegas, and down south at one of the RR Donnelly plants, but really don't want to up root and start again at this point in my life. The way I see it, is that I made money 'hand over fist' for many years, now it's time to slow down, go back to my roots, and do the stuff I really want to do... but is your plant hiring? Never know when I'll need a real job again.

Not hiring, just laid off 20 people. Definately a dying trade. I run gobel, and hamilton(dinosaurs) presses. The one I've been on lately is three stories tall and 150' long. Guess we should quit hijacking ozarkys thread. Wanna know more just pm me.

Magic, that's good advise, but I have to say those disposable masks are crap. A canister mask fits much better and actually keeps the dust out. I have never had any luck with disposables and learned that haying with my 2 full pages of known allergens.

I'll second or third Magic's exhortation, especially cutting cedar.  The oils in the wood when ingested in the form of small particulates are a bad irritant, and overexposure will leave you allergic to cedar :o  Now I KNOW you don't want that to happen.  Proper PPE is cheap when compared to chronic health conditions!

Hey "OZ" definitely sorry about the hijack. You know how it is when the guys 'get together'. In some ways we're worse than women, but of course we talk about the important man stuff. BTW, nice photos, keep them coming. I'm really impressed that you have gone from 'dreaming' about a mill  to cutting lumber in a few short weeks! Have you finalized any plans on your building? Bet you can't wait to get started on that.

I cut a fair amount of red cedar, so getting a mill that I didn't have to walk along with was a big reason for getting the TK 2000. But I still get some dust and have a mask just in case the wind is blowing the wrong way. I hate wearing the mask or ear protection, I like to hear what going on clearer. But not wearing the protection I know is wrong. I'm going to get electric down to the mill soon and put a fan behind me to blow on my back. I hope this helps also. Ricky

Ozarkian, notice that the mask that I wear has an exhalation valve.  Without it, the moisture from your breath will wet and render a common mask unusable.  Don't even bother with one without a valve.  This same mask is available at Walmart and other vendors for about $6.00 each.

Magicman, I liked the parbuckling/cross hauling trailer loading info.  How do you unload the trailer?
