Roof coating
« on: February 10, 2004, 05:39:07 am »
I have a shed that I put used roofing on, so now there ar 10,000 (give or take) nail holes. I coated it with alluminum roof coating last year, but it only helped a little. Anyone have any thoughts on another product that will fill the holes. I suppose I could take the caulk gun and fill each hole as I cling on for dear life.

sawyerkirk,

I also used --- used alluminum roofing on my mill building and it also had a bunch of holes.  I got some alluminum chaulking and it works just fine.  I was able to caulk from inside where you could really see the holes.  The mill has a 12 / 12 pitch anyway, I had a few holes I missed and they would leak only when it rained like hell and even then it was only minor. I added a 5 / 12 pitch shed roof off the back side of the mill and used the same stuff (roofing and caulking) and it works just fine. 8)

There are a number of rubberized roof coatings available which are designed to stick to asphalt shingles... you sort of paint on this glop to make shingles last longer and stay cooler.... I don't know how well it would work for you, but it may be easier to roll something like that on than trying to fill holes individually with some kind of roof cement.

We use roofing tar on a hot day. It'll setup firm.

You've probably got more holes than this would be practical for but we've used a neoprene washer on a sheetmetal screw to stop a leak.  Works especially well if you're installing a new metal roof and miss a purlin.
