« on: January 26, 2012, 05:37:01 pm »
Well what kind of wood is it? I hope the pics are clear enough  ::)

Ok the blade needed to be replaced, and it is red maple I was told the darker wood was from the minerals in the soil wich is heavy clay. it looks very cool the boards are 11 inches wide 8) 8)

Looks good, you didn't give a chance to guess, I was thinking maple or birch. What's  wrong with your blade, looks like it cuts straight and I sure wouldn't worry about those little tooth marks, they'll be gone the first pas through the planer.   Steve

How did you make the ID?  From the pictures I would have guessed hackberry.  Have any photos of the bark or the tree itself?

I'm thinking the grain looks a little to distinct for soft maple, and that heart is text put ash. but the saw would have had to be sharp for that to be ash, or there would be more stringy fiber on the edges of the boards.

Definitely maple...grain pattern is a dead giveaway. Although I leave mine laying around long enough that it gets these little black lines through the whole thing.  ;) Looks like your log had a little sweep? Did you have any trouble with tension?

The more I look at it, the more I agree with the maple. I've been out of the mill along time...

Its red maple.  The sugar streak and distinctive heartwood color are key identifiers.  If planed, the sap wood which is white will have a slight grey cast.

I believe that the white is sapwood.  Heartwood formation is more of a tree art than a science.  At some point, the tree needs a place to store its garbage, and the extractives and other tree junk gets shunted to the heart, giving it a distinctly different color in many species.  In general, heartwood is old sapwood that is no longer functional in transporting water to the crown.  Stuff gets dumped there as a result.

Yeah, you could easily confuse that (photograph) maple for ash, the rings are really pronounced. But that grey-brown heart would separate them in a photo. But ash tends to lean a little toward a light yellow and not bright white. Ash in my area has heart with yellow streaks into it, like inclusions. Ash is also one of them species where heart is not cut and dry. Heartwood in trees is actually separated into three different types.

Pre-commercial thinning pays off. :)

If I was standing there, I would have one hand on the board, the other scratching my head.  I'm no good at wood identification.  Definetly one  of my weaker points.
I've got a lot to learn

My red maple has a greenish brown heartwood.  It almost has a blue green tint to it.
