Ready to buy a Peterson?
« on: February 09, 2004, 08:09:40 am »
Since there is currently no U.S. distributor for the Peterson sawmill, you have to buy direct from Peterson. Not a bad thing it just that shipping on a single mill adds unnecessary cost to the mill. SInce the exchange rate for New Zealand dollars to U.S. dollars is in the dumper, the cost is already artificially high. If multiple buyers can get together and consolidate shipping a substantial savings is available. I'm ready to buy and would like know if anyone else out there would be interested in consolidating shipping? If so just click on my member name at the top left corner, go to the bottom of the page that pops up and click on send this member a private message. Thanks.

Thanks mobilesawyer,
Buying from Canada may be an option but no matter how you slice it, buying from anyone other than the manufacturer will be paying someone else to do work that I'm willing to do to keep the cost of this already expensive mill down.

Im waiting on some info from kiwi and may be looking to buy AROUND April...I like your idea of keeping the cost down and MAYBE we can swing a deal with the Peterson folks to be demo sources for them here in the states...

Seems to me that Peterson sent over a whole container load of their mills, either last year or the year before.  They had some pretty good deals since the shipping costs were a whole lot lower.

I don't see anything you can do about the exchange rate.  Go to Canada, and pay their rate.  I don't see that changing anytime soon, and even may get a little worse.

I was the host for the Maryland container load in December 2002.  The best part of buying in a container load is the training that comes with it.  Vermonter came down and trained us, got our mills put together and sawing safely.  Mrs. RevCant provided lunch both days, and folks could even hang around a second day for additional instruction.  I cut down some nice tulip poplar for the training.  Easy to saw and learn on.  By the end of the day, everyone was cutting nice lumber.  I even made some friends, Captain and Vermonter among them.

Yeah the exchange rate is, well you know ::).  But the bright side is your mill will actually appreciate in value once you get it.  And then, you can depreciate up to the full value the first year thanks to the 9/11 tax breaks.  So, don't hesitate, send those orders in ;D.

Ron,
Thanks for the info. I can't seem to locate any of the mills that came in the last container. I don't mind doing a little work to save a couple of bucks. I'm not sure about Canada. You still have to pay duty twice (once for Canada and once US.) and then ship it. Plus there is no training or help with the mill as you get with a container shipment.

All in all I'd prefer to round up some buyers and do our own deal.

There has been in the past. My Peterson was purchased through Baker, who used to be a distributor. Andy Myrick (Vermonter) started and apparently stopped. Be nice to hear from him, doesn't seem like he's posted here in a while. Hope he's alright?

Petersons mills increased in price 15% in Dec because of the currency exchange rate.  I purchased my mill a few weeks before the increase, guess I lucked out.

Ready to buy a Peterson?  Maybe I can help.
Time to come clean and let you folks know that I will be representing Peterson sawmills at 5 shows in the Eastern United States this year, for a schedule check here:

http://www.forestryforum.com/cgi-bin/board/YaBB.pl?board=events;action=display;num=1065702856

When and if there is more to add as far as news on this development, I'll be sure to let you know.  For now, I would suggest if you are looking for a potential shipping discount on a mill, talk to Rick in New Zealand and look into getting into a shipment with some demonstrator mills coming to the states soon.

Andy Myrick is doing well and weathering the cold Vermont winter with style.  I am hoping that his skills will be with us at some of the Eastern shows this year. ;D

Lou Brown is no longer a Peterson agent in Canada, unless something has changed that I am not aware of.

Thanks for listening and hope to meet many of you in the coming months.

Captain

Scott, yes I bought a  82 chevy one ton with a 454 in it.  Don't know much about chevys but we'll see what happens.  Get it Friday.

Thanks for looking for me, I appreciate it.

When I get the mill going I'll invite you up for a look, maybe you can saw a log or two.

That'd be great!  Glad you found a truck...  If I had to have a chevy, I'd want the 454.  One of the more troublefree motors GM ever made in my opinion...

Captain,
I called and asked about catching a ride with the load of demo mills that are coming over for the shows. I was told that they are shipping one ASM. That will be an individual shipment, no room for a hitchhiker. I still haven't given up on hosting a container. Buyers are few and far between. Good luck with your upcoming position with Peterson.
