Practice, practice, practice. It takes filing away 100s of chains to really get really good at it, after a while you feel what you are doing more than you see it. I could sharpen a chain blindfolded as well as not and basically I do because I can't see up close without my glasses which fog up horribly when I try to put them on while working.  :D

I can tell by the slide of the file on the cutter when its sharp, oldaxman thats taken many yrs of filing.
I've told guys this, they'd look at me like O-ya,  ::)  so I'm glad you posted it.
Third generation logger, owner operator, 30 yrs felling experience with pole skidder. I got my neck broke back in 89, left me a quad. The wife kept the job going up to 96.
