That reminds me of the story about Will Rogers wanting o get involved in politics. He went to the head kahuna instead of through the chain of command. When told he couldn't do that he replied " I was too ignorant to know it couldn't be done so I went ahead and did it".
My fingers still hurt when I think about throwing bales. :D To the op, all this goes to show if you show up with a positive attitude and a lick of common sense you will get what you want. You will need to knock on a number of doors, you will get some no's but with persistence it will come by. Don't say I need a job I'll do anything. An employer is not interested in what you want. Let him know you are a reliable hand and are willing to work for the long term, you have something to offer that he needs. Good luck.

I would add two things from my experience for you. The answers about what to bring, wear and how to act are all excellent advise. I would modify the be on time answer to read be early. Foremen really like a worker to be on site before they are supposed to be doing their job. This is also a good time to receive early instructions, show interest in your work and it also is the time that the foreman might give you that better job for the day because someone called in sick and you are early enough to get a few pointers before shift start. The other advice comes directly from the mouth of a mill manager who hires, fires and manages about twenty men at a circular mill. I have heard him say more than once that so and so is slow at their job but he doesn't mind because they are steady. Speed is not the most important skill to have, steadiness is.

"The early bird gets the worm" is not talking about worms.  Thanks r.man for bringing up that very valid point.  Workers are either "part of the problem" or "part of the solution".  The key word is workers.

Another item, leave your cellphone in your truck.  Check it at noon during your lunch break, not during work time.

That's a big item Lynn.

Two years ago I was on a mobile sawjob and the customer said he would provide an off-bearer and that he was a good worker too!

Well the job was to saw around 7,000 board feet.

About every 10-15 minutes (or less) this helper was on his phone either talking or texting.

He had to be told (by me) that I was waiting for another log, or whatever else was needed.

About 3 hours into the job and I counted, he was on his cell phone a total of 18 times.

When the customer drove in, I shut down and went over to have a conversation with him, and he took the helpers phone and turned it off.

During lunch break I explained to the helper, just how he was hindering production.

So, yes, leave the cell phone in the truck!
