You are going to have some premium quartersawn red oak :). But like everyone else, I am more impressed with Jake's chainsaw ninja skills :D. I need a saw sharpening lesson, too.

Dodgy I would have given you one if you weren't so rude when you rode all the way over to see Danny but couldn't ask me over. :D Now the lesson will have a much steeper learning curve in that I will not teach you all you need to know but just enough to get you in trouble. ;D
As I told Danny I would bet he can cruise some timber better than I. When you do something enough you get a little bit better at it. I enjoy working with Danny as he is very easy to impress until we step into his shop and he shows what he is working on. I then feel like I don't have a clue what I am doing as that man knows the difference between a hammer and a saw. The wood work that he produces from the lumber he has is just amazing. :o I might know how to run a chain saw but the number of tools he can work with is mind blowing.

If we were all good at the same thing, then we would just fight all the time  :D

I have sawn tens of thousands of BF of lumber while Jake has sawn tens of millions of BF, probably more than that.  I have learned more about how to be efficient when sawing lumber from Jake than how to use a chainsaw.

I have some crappy red oak logs to saw first before I can give this tree a shot.  I hope that the doty heart rot is no worse than it looks.  I anchorsealed the quarters today, and one had the tell tell dark black stain that foretells metal, so I suspect that at least one of the quarters will have fence wire.  If so, I will have to send my metal detector off the Wood-Mizer re-sharp to get it re-sharpened  :).

Steve, they can grow pretty fast around here.  It was 45" at DBH.  Divide 45 by 112 years and you get .4 inches of diameter growth per year.  Half of that is .2 inches which would be the radial growth on each side of the tree, so the average ring width would be .2" wide which is a little better than 3/16ths of an inch per year.  This tree had underwent serious decline in the last 10 years.

No.  This tree is on the property line and on an old land lot line (metes and bounds system in GA versus township and range).  There was a fence here separating two fields on either side, and this "hedgerow" between the fields has been here for 150 years I bet.

You can see in the photos that the two "fields" are now pine plantations.  The leftmost plantation is mine, the rightmost one is my neighbors.  That is my driveway and I keep the old "hedgerow" cleaned and mowed, even on my neighbor's side since I am the one that cleaned up the hedgerow initially before this neighbor even owned the property.

My wife likes it clean and mowed.  She does not like snakey (infested with snakes) :)

Danny, I sure wish that you could find some sizeable trees to cut instead of these little twigs you keep taking pictures of for us look at....Thank heaven you have a friend with a big chainsaw to keep you organized. This oak is far better than your earlier pecan project.  Thanks for sharing......

I don't know why but Danny and I seem to have a magnet for the big ones. I do know that we always have a great time working on these logs.

Someone needs a Swingblade mill then  ;D  We smile when we get logs like that cos we are in our natural element.

Nice work with the chainsaw though, and a lot of good boards to be had in a log like that for sure.  :)

I would love to have a swing mill but sometimes you have to make do with what you have. I have now done this chain saw type work so much that I don't worry about it to much. I have 5 more logs about that size waiting on me in Hazelhurst. ;D

For sure  :)

Like I said, nice work with the saw

Get R Done  ;D Those wide clear boards make it worth the hassle.

He prolly threatened to stick it in a Sweetgum if it didn't saw straight.   ;D

Well, it certainly seems to have worked.   :D  Hmmmmm....Jake, you sleep with that saw?    ;)

I see, Danny.  We have the same metal detector!   :D

Maybe Jake will buy us a swing mill :D.

I have two boxes of those metal detectors 8).

Jake said this oak was not as bad as that big pecan.  Pecan will test your resolve.

I get in enough trouble as it is. Maybe next time I make it back to central GA I can drop by and get the full sharpening lesson IF I promise to never ever bring you a 40" pecan log to saw??   :D

Good luck sawing that southern red!  Pace yourself so you don't destroy your back flipping it after every cut.  :o

Actually I know you will do just fine and sojmeday that beautiful wood will end up in an exqusite piece of furniture.  :)

I am not sure that flipping after every cut makes the most sense, either.  I am still thinking about what to saw out of it and how to saw it out.
