The new Grinder finally arrived today! Big investment to eliminate most bottle necks.  Ran two loads through it today along with lots of training, tomorrow more grinding and training.

The bark disintegrates into very small particles or fuzz that disappears.  The needles do the same magical disappearing act.  It is a very dusty operation.
Oklahoma State University just finished a 3 year study of different mulches and cedar is as good as any, longer lasting and more insect repellant than other mulches.

We have been selling cedar mulch now for several years. We sell about 450 or so yards a year. Its a better seller than hardwood by about 2-1, even though cedar brings twice as much (this is retail). Cedar mulch makes a wonderful product put through a machine like that. We don't get ours from Aaron due to distance, we get ours from Pratt Ks from a very similar machine, done the same way. People just love it. The smell, the color, the texture. Just wish they would decide to move a couple of hundred miles north for a short while. I would load up.

Amazingly, we have been selling it lately with the good weather. Not a lot; maybe half dozen yards a week. This time last year they wouldn't have been able to dig down in the snow deep enough to find a place to put it. Mulch seems to be recession resistant on the retail side. People can't afford to travel or take vacations, or don't want to spend the money on that, they stay home and tend their yards and gardens.

Bibbyman, we will not be using matts. Most ground out here is clay so it packs pretty hard. There is some ground we will have to really watch, but that was one of the biggest problems was moving the old grinder when it was wet. The dual wheels on the old one would cut through the ground like knives.

Sandhills, with those smaller trees in the picture I see I would have a hard time keeping up with this new grinder, we would have to put 7 or 8 trees at a time in there and your field would be cleared fast.

Kansas, you are correct about the weather. We have an order next week for a semi load to go to a retailer in OKC. Usually we do not start moving material to those types until late Feb. early March.

Those machines are impressive to say the least. The man that comes and grinds my slabs at the big mill comes in with the Mobark 6600. I takes him about 12 hours to grind all I can make in a year. I think it has a V12 Cat engine and burns about 75 gallons of fuel an hour. He feeds it with a Volvo 120 front end loader. It will grind as fast as he can load it. I think your machine is in the same class as this one and it will run your tail off trying to feed it with that skid steer.  I think I know what you are going to want for next Christmas.  ;)

If that beast hasn't a fire extinguisher or two, I'd be inventing in them around that dusty cedar. Those machines can get mighty hot. I've seen chippers overheat and go poof.

 The machine looks great.

Would you mind posting a pic of the mulch that it produces from the cedar? Some spread out so particle size distribution can be seen, like on a white board or something.
Wondering if it chips first then hammer mills, or what the inside progression is to break the trees down to mulch.

I wish that this grinder was only 250k!!

SwampDonkey, the grinder has fire extinguishers mounted on it and an air compressor with hose reel to blow off the dust every day after use. We learned to always no matter what clean the grinder and blow dust off religiously everyday before we leave. We also wait around for at least a half hour to let the engine cool down after cleaning.

Beenthere, we use what is called a bear claw tooth. It is three carbide tips soldered in a row. They basically bite the wood off in chunks and certain size screens size it to what you want the product to be. The tree goes in one end and the grinder then sizes it through the screens and the finish product comes out the other end.
We do not have to regrind the mulch it comes out just how the customer wants it. I will have to look and see if I have some pics of mulch up close.

Cedarman do you have a link to that study from OSU?  I have been arguing with some of my landscaper customers that cedar mulch is better than pine and could use some more ammunition.

Those are some really tough machines and they have to take a lot of abuse. I would be shocked if it didn't cost at least $500,000.00.

There are a few really large Peterson Pacific's up this way and they are knocking the door on a cool million bucks. One local chipping contractor had 2 of them burn this past summer .... OUCH !!!

nas, I saw the preliminary presentation of the mulch study at a meeting last Oct.   They said it wasn't officially released at that time but should be out soon.  I need to check with OSU and see if they have it published for public consumption yet.

Jamie, what caused the fires on the Petersons?
I know the fellow in Ks had his burn up, but it was arson by ex employee. Kansas knows about bad ex employees I think.
I am in the pink when sawing cedar.

During the early years of developing chippers for woods operations many burnt because of the engine overheating. Add to that all that waste that falls out and dust around the yard to ignite. Sometimes that waste on the yard can self-combust in the summer sun as many were/are parked and stuff brought to it. Leaky hydraulic hoses don't help. Now-a-days on crown the forest company foremen are real sticky on leaky stuff, they will shut you down. And everyone has to take WHIMIS.

Pre-commercial thinning pays off. :)

From what i was told it was debris buildup around the engine. They were chipping in a wood yard and probably got a little slack as they were used to running them in the woods.
