dr woodspliter and super split questions
« on: November 26, 2011, 07:27:09 pm »
DR company is making a version of the supersplit woodsplitter. IT has 2 flywheels and is mechanical (very fast) Anyone using one? I used one years ago and liked it.

I bought a used super split  with a 11/2 hp electric motor a month ago. It is great, I love it. I split about a half cord today in 30 minutes. It runs off my 3000 watt Honda generator or a 20 amp outlet. I read up on the DR and it seems like a good unit.  Holmes

Apparently. SuperSplit's patent ran out, and DR has cloned it almost exactly (though their advertising makes it sound like they invented the concept).

I bought a new supersplit about two weeks ago.  Awesome unit, nicely made, super fast splitting time, good power.  Great people to buy from, I love it so far.

You can also see videos of the SuperSplit in action in the "Logrite" section here on the Forestry Forum. They built a SupeSplit into their firewood processor. One of the videos shows them splitting some gnarly pieces.

Yep,

Those videos are probably why  I bought one.  Real world splitting, real world wood, and real world times.

They are both about 2500bucks so why would anyone buy the Dr unit that is new to the ballgame and claims to have invented  the technology?

The DR RapidFire was on sale: $2,594 w/ 6HP manual start Subaru & optional work table. (Reg price $3,099). The sale says "Order by Nov. 30", but the sale price is still showing up on there web site as of the morning Dec 1.  The SuperSplit similarly equipped goes for $2,924.

(I priced the units above with the optional work table. IMO, that's a necessity if you're splitting big enough wood to require resplitting, and want to avoid a lot of extra handling.)

If I were in the market for one, for $330 extra cost (roughly 10%), I'd still go for the proven SuperSplit (not to mention that I'd rather support the company that developed the technology). If the DR were not on sale, there's even less of a question in my mind.

I can see why some would take the gamble, however.  One thing DR does have going for it is they extended their normal 6 month "Hands-on Trial" period to 1 year. If dissatisfied for any reason, you can return it for a refund of the purchase price. They're very good about living up to their no-hassle return policy. (And besides, if one of you returns one, that's a chance for one of the locals around here to pick up a used return unit at a lower price).

It seemed to me that super split was $4000 years ago??? the $2200 seemed like a good price.

There is a 6k super split with a bigger engine and  flywheels but the one similar to the Dr unit is about the same money.  The super split has a road kit on out as well while the Dr is a yard only model.  It is a bunch of BS that they don't include the table with the purchase but it wouldn't be too hard to weld one up and save a few bucks

The SuperSplit prices I referenced in my Dec 1st post was for their 6 HP Subaru Robin engine (same as DR's). SuperSplit makes one with a smaller engine for a little less.

I purchased a Super Split 5 years ago on which I have split an average of 10 full cords a year.  Recently I noticed the DR brand in a magazine and the words "patent pending" on the ad.  I visited a DR store when I took my wife to the airport about a month ago to check them out.

Seems Super Split's patent ran out and DR jumped on the band wagon from what the sales person told me.  The one thing I didn't care for on the DR is you have to hold the handle that starts the splitting cycle until the cycle is over, when you let go of the handle the retract cycle starts.  I know they did that for safety reasons but it does slow down the process.

The last time I stopped at the Tractor Supply Company they were offering a flywheel powered splitter also.  The price was around the DR and Super Split range.

The TSC splitter (Speeco Speedpro) is not as well made. They've had problems with teeth breaking off the rack , and use a low-end Kohler engine, rather than the Subaru Robin. I can't find it on their web site today. I wonder if they sold out, or pulled it.

From what I've heard they stopped sales due to teeth shearing off the rack. They were priced at around $1700. I'd love to have a used supersplit, but I've never seen one for sale, people must just hold on to them.

You need to watch craigs list closely and react quickly to get a supersplit. It took me 11/2 years to get mine. It's electric and I'm very pleased with it. It is a beautiful area you live in. I had the pleasure of playing the U.of Virginia golf course a few years ago ,it was wonderful.  Holmes

I am in heavy logging country and they are scarce used (just not on the market) or as said very old and destroyed.
