wood size

hi my first post here

    I have been sawing for my needs around the shop so if I need a 2x4 I saw a 1 1/2 x 3 i/2 to match what I am mateing to so if I was to saw some to put back that someone else would be interested in would I saw 8/4 x16/4 for a 2x4? I built a 36x40 shop (metal) and I'm boarding the walls up 6ft up so now I'm sawing 4/4 x whatever I can get out of a log.

Okay TJhammer, help us figure this out.  You say this is your first post, yet you have 84 posts. I thought, well, maybe first post on the sawmill board, so I looked and no, you have posts here too. When looking at those posts, I see the previous post you said you thought this site was "Dead".

Now, reading the first post in this topic, you certainly sound like someone that has the ability to "function" in normal conversation, so hey? What gives?

I think material size is what you are asking about.
In our area there is a planning and zoning department that controls how a to construct a building.  They allow the use of un-inspected lumber when it is cut to full dimension.  Even though our country  uses one construction standard the approach to what building material is allowed varies greatly.

So when I cut for other folks I ask them what their use is going to be and caution about the issue of building permits.  Cutting to nominal size does have advantages, as you found there is also advantages to the fitting of windows and doors, nail length, and metal tie sizes.

As to cutting siding, I prefer 7/8 for siding (if you are using a bandmill with a scale, just cut on the inch or let the kerf allowance be zero.  Thinner battens are better, 3/4" thick is good.

So if you want to cut ahead of time to sell lumber you will need to know if there is an issues with building permits otherwise most folks will want nominal size such as  1 1/2X4 3 1/2.   Farmers/ranchers may be the only exception, they like the thicker material it holds up better to animal stress.

I always question the customer whether the framing lumber will be used where; building permits are required, financing is required, and/or the building will be insured.

In those instances, the architectural drawings must specify "Graded and/or Rough Sawn lumber".  This removes any possibility of big time and sometimes insurmountable future roadblocks.  Almost 100% of the framing lumber that I saw is sized for 1 1/2 X 3 1/2, 1 1/2 X 5 1/2, etc. after shrinkage.

FHA will not allow any ungraded framing lumber.

You all should be ashamed at yourself's.   tj may not have the best writing skills but that's no reason to publicly bash him.   And to publicly tell a 70 year old man that your going to beat him with his walker?  Wheres your respect for your forum elders..   Your forum?... Maybe, but without the members experiences "your forum" wouldn't exist.  A few years of College doesn't make anyone smarter or superior to anyone.   Remember Einstein never went to collage.   Rules I understand but a pubic bashing is unacceptable.   I'd be a bit defensive too.
tj is only one of a handful of members to build a swingmill from scratch and all along he's shared the experience so that others members could benefit.   His post have been very polite and informative and never has he been even close to causing problems here.   Members like TJ is what makes the FF worth reading its not just another thread of "Which Mill To Buy?"

First, I'm not a fence-straddler, but I hate to see anyone talked down to. This is a great forum Jeff has built and deserves the respect due him, but so does each poster/responder. No, not all have skills as others but great ideas have been shared by most. This is one time to scratch this post from the forum and move on before other's feeling get hurt. I hate to see posters begin taking sides, it reminds me of politicians, and my belly is full of them.

I do hate to see this turn into a back and forth which never ends but I have never been one to hold back so I’ll put in my 2 cents.

Legally speaking this forum is jeffs property, and that is how I think of it, if we were in jeffs house talking about our new skidder and someone was being insulting or belittle to anyone in the room I would expect jeff as a good host to show them the door, but even more to the point if someone walked in and insulted jeff to his face I think we would all expect jeff to have a few harsh words for him before he shows him the door.

I don’t think the medium we use changes the way we should behave; just because we are on the internet typing and not looking someone in the face doesn’t change the fact that we should be generally nice and try not to insult anyone… that’s just common etiquette IMO….
