I'm sorry for all of this
« on: November 23, 2011, 10:20:20 am »
I owe several people and the forum as a whole an apology.  I've become short and ornery with almost every post. This change over has not went well for me. I know it needed to be done, and I had to really build the courage to dive into it.  At times the last two days I have felt completely defeated. I'm up here at the cabin without the pat on the back from Tammy saying don't worry, you'll get it, and it just makes me feel terribly alone in this mess.  I know I am not, you are all here, and that is why I need to say I am sorry for my attitude and for the problems this has caused all of you while trying to enjoy the forum.

The more I see what is going on the more respect I have for you and how you are handeling it.  I would have lost it long ago. From what I see the fourm is working well enough for most users. Take thursday off and try to relax a bit.

If you had spent this time deer hunting, you would have had to dress it.  OK, well maybe that would have been easier and a lot less bloodier.

Anyway, your dedicated efforts have not gone unnoticed.  How 'bout a pat on the back and assurance from all of us that you have our complete admiration and support.   :)

Dont worry ! I am pretty sure most of us like what is in the works.

Enough for now. Go get yourself a deer or what ever it is you have tags for.

Jeff, first off, no apology needed.  I think the majority of us can understand.  Second off, next time it gets bad, call me.  I can help!  Third off, you've actually done a great job.  These sorts of changes are a big deal and you've done very well.

Jeff I think we can all say that we understand. We have all dealt with things in our own lives and sometimes get short. I want to let you know that the way you run this site is amazing. The way you have this site put togather and the way you run it is far better than any other site or forum I have been on. I really appreciate all you have done with this site and the people who are members here. You are very talented with great values.

I really appreciate all you do for this site.

I certainly understand and I know from experience of the frustrations. That's why you won't hear from me until the smoke clears.  You already know the big stuff and the little stuff can always wait.  As long as the Forum is up and running, take some time for yourself.

Jeff,

Anytime you do a major update it can be stressful. I don't know of one time if that I did not feel stressed about doing changes and upgrades on a server.  Hang in there. Please feel to ask for help if you need it. I would be happy to help also.

No need for apologies, Jeff.  I spent 13 years as an applications programmer in a mainframe environment.  I went through some major upheavels with equipment upgrades, database changes, etc. I always had the assistance of least one other experienced programmer.  I think you've done a remarkable job as a "one man band", so to speak.

Thanks again for all of your hard work making the forum the great place it is.

In my honest opinion you're the last person here that should be apologizing, you do a great job that benefits a VERY large number of people.  I would never even pretend that I understand the work and time that is put into something like this so here's a pat on the back from me  smiley_clapping.  Now get out there and go hunting, once I take the time to upload Java I want to see who got the biggest deer (I'm kinda proud of this one  ;)).

I think you should not be worried over improving the site they way you think is correct.

I can be a lot of help sending emails and searching on Google.  Other than that I call the neighbor girl to help me out of the other problems.

Sometimes you have to just walk away and take some time for yourself and then regroup and attack the issues the next day or three. You have a outstanding forum with thousands of members that surely understand. Everything is working for me. I like the changes it is alot fster. You have done a great job on the change over.  First off...  You need to apoligise to anyone for doing what you are doing , some need to cut you some slack, if they have issues with the looks or things not quite up to pare well its there little issue. Ya can't fix every thing all at once, it will take a few tries to get it all going as it was or better.  ( I know you are wanting to please all , some just ain't pleasable  ::)  )
It's all good Jeff, take time to smell the roses or look at the turkeys  ;) :)

Jeff,

No apology required.

You're doing it the hard way, using a smartphone and in public so everyone can see the warts and all. I had a lot worse time upgrading our Exchange server recently and I did it by building a new box while the old one was still serving and then switching them out. And I still had some real problems and I've worked in IT for twenty years...

Take a break, enjoy Thanksgiving, go hunting, go stand in a quiet place and let the spirit talk softly to your soul. Nothing happening here that's worth beating yourself up.

aw well my advice is ....
Take them to the woodshed!
Give them complainers their comeupins.
Delete their posts.
Give them a new name so they cant find their page!
Put their usernames in a big bowl and pull out a new one each day to beat up on.
 ;D ;D ;D :D :D :D :o :o ::) :) :) :)

Second thought, do what I do. Take it all in stride. The only people that cause much trouble usually only need something to complain about. They like to pick on folks that are too busy working to do anything about their petty complaints.
Don't let it get you down. Those who are dealing you greif have probably never had their candle burning at both ends with someone trying to light it in the middle.
I appreciate your efforts and I think the changes look great. PC

Jeff,

I would like to echo everything that everyone here has already said, everything is working fine, so go take a break Jeff and find your center again. I stressed out over the build of my Belsaw this spring, summer, and fall and this forum helped relieve the stress and problems I had with that. I am sure that I am one of many members that are very grateful for this forum and everything you do. If it is down for a few hours or days, our lives will still go on and we will learn the new layout and methods in the coming weeks as you progress.

P.S. -And to those that are giving you a hard time, just PM their addresses to neighboring members and us that understand what you are going thru, and we will take care of them for ya(In a forestry forum approved fashion of course)   ;)

From this turkey to you, enjoy your hunting.

reride82, food takes one's mind off one's troubles. And tomorrow is food day which we should give thanks for.  If we are eating, we can't be complaining.
Making some people eat grits would be some kind of punishment, but for others having them just out of reach would be torture.  I guess you're right, too severe.

For me the forum is a place I can talk the same talk other loggers/sawmill owners talk and I enjoy it very much. So I understand when you have to put a stop on a thread because it's getting out of hand. So you don't have to apologize to me, just go to your deer stand and relax and enjoy the early winter days. Jeff,

Most of us regulars to the forum, who appreciate what the forum is really about, could probably go a few days without it, and still be able to get out of bed with some sort of alternate reason to go on living.  It's those who don't understand that are quick to complain.

Here is a similar situation that we all might get a kick out of.

Thanks Jeff,

I've been involved in system upgrades before, in a large organization with plenty of full-time programmers. I've done the planning and testing and helped schedule implementation. I've seen what can go wrong, and how badly it can go wrong. So from that perspective ...

 I can read new posts.
 I can make new posts.
 It works.

You're doing good, Jeff  ;D.

I have to echo what everyone else has said there is no need for you to apologize for anything.

Keep up the great work we all understand the changes don't come easy.  Now put down the phone and go hunting.

Thanks Jeff for all of your work, especially during the Hollidays!  It is interesting how the human mind works.  We are programmed to notice things that are different..... so came the shock and oohs and auhs regarding the new format.  But our ability to adapt and allow our minds to be conditioned made most of us feel right back at home after a few uses of the new format.   No big deal.   Have a great Thanksgiving.   I usually do the prayer at our gatherings so Im going to lead volunteers to mention what they are thankfull for this year.   Im thankfull for the Form and your efforts!    :) :) 8)

NAR, No Apology Required.   :)  And shame on you for thinking there was need in the first place.  Super job, well done, big pat on the back.  I can not begin to understand everything it took from energy, time, nerve, knowledge and skill.  I've never not enjoyed opening this website to see what folks are doing.  You provide the link(s) allowing us like thinkers to share.  Thank you!

Jeff,

Like several others above, I make a living managing large scale software upgrades and installations.  Even with a huge cast of "supporting characters", they are never perfect.  Get a cup of coffee.  Take a walk in the woods.  Go out for a meal.  Take a nap.  Relax.  It will all come together.

We appreciate the work that you do to keep the forum up and running.  And, we appreciate you.

Thank you,

Warren

Jeff I think we can all say that we understand. We have all dealt with things in our own lives and sometimes get short. I want to let you know that the way you run this site is amazing. The way you have this site put togather and the way you run it is far better than any other site or forum I have been on. I really appreciate all you have done with this site and the people who are members here. You are very talented with great values.

I really appreciate all you do for this site.

Well stated and I couldn't agree more.

Jeff, we don't take enough time to thank you and Tammy for the wonderful gift that y'all have given us.  It truly has been a life changing event for many of us, and in a very positive way.

Scott

Jeff, you have no room to feel sorry about anything.. I've been involved in major softwre upgrades that had all the resources of major corporations behind them, and didn't go nearly as smoothly as this one has. Add to that, you have done it with nothing more to work with than a smart phone. Absolutely AWSOME ..

Jeff,
You hold yourself to a very high standard.  We all get the benefit.  You're not exprcted to be perfect 'til you can walk on water.  That gives you til at least spring as ice doesn't count
