Major changes coming
« on: November 07, 2011, 06:07:35 pm »
In the very near future the Forestry Forum is going to have to go through spme very extensive software upgrades. This includes both the Forum and the gallery. Many things you have grown accustomed to will have to be changed in order for us to keep up with advancing technologies. We will loose some things I have custom coded in, and those things may take time to replace as I learn the ins and outs of the new software.  Some of our cool things like the members map will have to start from square one. We will get a new one, but we will have to add ourselves again.

I'll give you more updates when I get closer to the time this will happen. Right now, time is a factor with things I have on the table the next couple of weeks, but testing is going well. Well enough to at least announce the impending changes.  Thanks again to Norm and Patty for the test server in my closet. It's in full test mode once again after sitting ready since the spring of 2010 when we changed over to the new servers.

I think some of the things people will like. Photo uploading for one. There will be no more Java. If you can't upload a photo with this, there is no hope for you. :)  I may try to incorporate the java uploader back as an alternative, as it resizes the photos befor the upload, saving time for dial up users. The New flash version will resize after it gets to the server. There will still be the issue of teaching people how to get the photo into the post however.  :D

I must admit, the automatic resizing of the Java uploader is one of my favorite features.

The problem with Java, is the problems people have with Java. I hope to still include it as an option like I mentioned.  The flash uploader works really nice, as long as you have a decent connection to the internet. It also does all the resizing for you, but on the other end.

Several procedures I have to tweak yet before I attempt this. The first one is I have to split the database. Originally, the gallery install required it's data tables to be in the same database at the forum's in order to bridge. That is no longer necessary, in fact in order to upgrade the forum software, it is mandatory that the gallery has a separate database, or the forum upgrade will corrupt it. So far I've been successful in the test environment.

These are not software updates, but full upgrades of the software, so compatibility has to be tested and retested.   Bibbyman should be happy that my original thoughts on changing the Gallery software completely, and archiving the old photos is now a mute point. That's not the way we are going to go. Galleries will remain intact, but you will have to learn how to move around in it again. :)  The Biggest reason for the upgrades is the fact that the rewrites are so much more resource friendly, and should make the server run much better and allow for other functions I've tested that had to be sidelined due to performance issues.

 It's all good.

Good news for those that care. Just tested the new Java uploader. No problems with it, so it will remain an option.  :)

Always improving and getting better. I will have questions. I would much rather be in the woods than trying to learn something new on this thing. But I know it needs to be done and help will be available. Tom helped me out some last time along with DanG too.

Phase one is completed. The Gallery Database has been separated from the Forum Database, and are now running independently from each other. This sets the stage to upgrade each independently from one another.

:D :D  Yes they have, and they is going to be a bit daring as well. They is going into the next phase of the upgrade via my laptop while up here hunting, probably within the hour. First the gallery will be disconnected/disabled from the forum and then the forum will go into maintenance mode while I back up the database and begin the first upgrade steps.  So, for those of you that read this soon, you will not be surprised when there is no forum in a little bit. I have no idea how long it will be down. If we are lucky, less than an hour. If we are not, who knows... :)
