They got me....
« on: November 02, 2011, 07:37:18 am »
Went to the shop yesterday evening and couldn't find my chainsaws. All three were gone. Local crackheads made a round while I was gone to the State Fair. Ms 440 Ms 441 and 029 all gone. All in one lick. Local sheriff says arrests have been made and lots of items recovered. Lots were allready traded for crack and were gone. But sir, bring your serial numbers and come claim your stuff if its there. Serial numbers? oh boy...

Your post reminded me to check... I have a spreadsheet with my chainsaws listed, along with the serial number. For some reason, I never got around to recording the serial number on one of them. time to update that list...

Buck you have my sympathys!! That is not cool....a working man works hard enough to make ends meet only to have some crack heads walk off with your gear? I surely hope you can track down your saws or if not that something works out for you...good luck and again my sympathy!!

They set you up Buck, i know the feeling,  its just about as bad if they stoled your woman.

9 out of 10 its somebody you know

Around here when they steel saws they have a tendency to sell them to other loggers, this way they'd never service on the street. The local deputy would come out on the job and ask if you had purchased any saws, they found a lot of that way.

This happed to me, i was at the local pup and they lifted a 266 on me , to make a long storie short. When they took it they went down to my uncles place, about to blocks from the pup and sold it to him, he was also a full time logger.
His boy worked for me once in a while so he new my saws. He was at work and he heard his dad bragging about this all most new 266 he picked up cheap. He went took a look , he figured right away it was my saw, he had run it when i bought it and he knew i had just lost one.
He came over that night and told me that he was pretty sure his dad had my saw. So i went right over there and asked him if i could see the Husky he'd bought. He drug his feet out to the pickup, sure enough there it was, i knew it was my saw and he knew it was my saw. I told him i wanted my saw back, he said do you have $200., i told him i wasn't going to pay him for my saw, are you crazy. Will he didn't give to me, i had to call the Sheriff department and tell them the story.
I went and got the numbers from the dealer for the deputy to go get the saw.
That afternoon the deputy pulls out on the job with my saw, he said he had a heck of a time getting the saw, he finely had to tell him if he didn't give him the saw he'd have to take him to jail, that worked.
He ended up with his name in the newspaper for buying stolen property, he blamed me for it and that i owned him $200., we were pretty close before this happed, it was sad it ended up that way he never did get over it.

Yeah Lumberjack, they didnt go far but the trail went cold at the crack dealer. I read between the lines when I was told I would have to have serial numbers to prove my ownership. Probably a few deputies needing to cut firewood this time of the year. You're right CFarm, the 575 is a serious saw. I put a new carb and fuel line on today and it'll scream now. I think it's a keeper with firewooding and two mills around.

Know how you feel mate. I lost a Stihl 076 Super and a Husky 36. Found the 076 in a pawn shop 20 miles away. Been sold to them by 18 year old druggie girl (Who probably couldnt even carry it, much less start it). After a lot of really bad words to locals boys in blue, I got it back 2 days later.....Never saw the Husky again........ :'(

Wifes cousin got me for a "MINT" very slightly used Husky 268XP w/28" Husky branded bar.  One of the few I don't have the SN recorded.  Don't know why I didn't record it I usually do.  By the time I missed it it was too late it was long gone to the "dealer".  Outdoor Power my local dealer records and sends in all warranty on new OPE bought  from them.  If I had bought it new from them I would have the SN for the Police.  RECORD THEM SN's.  Very sorry you were had that was a lot of money in those saws.

troublemaker, yes he did, the guy who stoled it was a Native American off Red Lake Indian reservation, which is a closed reservation, at that time the State could not cross the line to pick anybody up, all they could do is put a warrant out for him.
I don't know if they ever caught him.

You can get an electric etcher cheap and mark all your tools.

I have a set of number and letter punches. Fairly cheap also. Useful for other things.

I think your initials etched or stamped in your tools would be fairly good proof that the tools are yours.
