We got 22", Peru, MA got 32". :o A lot of damage, especially the Norway maples and the Bradford pears due to the leaves being on so many trees still. On the main street in town both sides are lined with large Bradfords. The entire street was littered with major leaders broken off.

Dave,

That is awful and almost beyond comprehension for this time of year.

They got more the further south you went from here. Our snow never stuck to the road here, but out at work it looks like they plowed, but there was only 2 inches there and mostly melted out today. The bare fields hold the snow a lot longer than vegetated ground. Got to about 46 F here today. Man, that sure is a lot of snow down there for October.  ;D

My white oak, Norway, lilacs and apples still have leaves.

Considering the amount of rain we've had, it is not looking like an easy winter. The forests have really taken a beating the last few years.

I hate that everyone is having trouble in the North East, but I have a question...would it reduce the cost and loss of electricity if all the lines were underground. It seems to me that every time there is a snow storm in the east, it causes power to go out. I know it may be cheaper to run overhead lines, but in the long run the local areas could save some money.

Just as an FYI, overhead lines down here cost more than underground. When my neighbor ran power to his house, the overhead estimate was $11,000, he ran underground for $3,000.

The lines to my house are underground, but it's poles out on the main road.

Got called out this morning to a local gun club! 1 mile driveway was littered with 13 tree,s down blocking roadway and downed wires. we went loaded for bear and had them chipped, logs loaded and out the driveway as the power company pulled in at 12pm. the director was so happy he issued us all 1 year full memberships as we left 8). we have 4 more that I  have not seen yet. The biggest reason most power companies like over head instead of underground is when there is a problem it is a lot easier to find if it is overhead. Underground takes a lot more time to track down and repairs can be a lot harder to fix.

It would go a long way to plan the placing of the poles along a field instead of a forest edge. Years ago they removed all the cedar poles, well there were along the fields for the most part, where there were fields. The new poles where put into our yard trees and several areas up along the woods since. That is just plain "bonehead".

Okay here is a link to my video on the storm damage.  (I know it took a long time)  It really is only a snap shot of the damage.
What I really wanted to show was the power trucks from all over the country that would drive down the roads in groups of 3 or 4.  It was like being in an old war movie when they would show the tanks rolling through the town that they just destroyed.  Those trucks left and were replaced by those tandem brush haulers in my video.  Every town has one or two of those dumping areas.  It is one month after the storm and the brush haulers are still around.
