It started snowing here at about 1:00 pm and we have almost 4 inches now. They are forecasting 10 to 14 inches by tomorrow morning - not good. Most of the trees still have their leaves. :(

For those that don't think it is funny, the leaves are still on the trees!

Snowed a bunch here too, over 10 inches when I came in at 6PM and it hasn't stopped yet.  Only 3 times in recorded history has it ever snowed a measurable amount in the month of October and the most ever was less than 3 inches.  It is really incredible.

We were without power for 9 hours.  The leaves are still on most of the trees and the snow is heavy and wet, a really bad combination.  You could actually stand outside and wait and hear limbs or whole trees falling every couple of minutes.  It is crazy.

Just got in from plowing. I will call it a pain in the a-- snow ,wet ,heavy and I had to go out type of snow. way to early for our region. I am not a predictor of weather but it makes you think when it comes in like this, I was watching the radar all along and I would have not called this one, 30 + years doing this. I've seen lots of permanent snows in October before up here, but it's been a few years because the ground has to be frozen. But it seems if you get a lot of snow like that the weather turns cold and stays cold. Two or 3" and it will melt off and turn mild. I'd like to be able to cut brush for at least 2 more weeks.  ::)

I see some light snow now, but it's turning to water as it hits because it's above freezing.

Wow that's quite a dump of snow.  :o

It began here before daylight and has barely covered the ground and tree limbs with a light coating. It's coming down now as well but very light. Just making stuff wet.

I put my snow tires on yesterday, so it had to snow. ;)

I,m blaming SwampDonkey for leaving the door open! all the cold air came down to us and caused it to snow early. Was really pretty awesome at some points during the snow, was a heavy wet snow that stuck to everything, the landscape and trees where all covered and pretty as a picture. Tim

Our little dusting is long gone here and I see rain showers on the hills over in Maine to the west. It's suppose to clear tonight and be good weather this week.

Geesh, with all this talk of snow I figure I had better go and get my trucks jewlery ready, and loaded.   :D  Oh yeah, guess I need to unload and split the load of firewood that's on it first.   :D  As I said before I hope we get a few days of good cold weather before it snows.  We need the frost in the ground before it snows or I will have to down grade my skidder from the tractor to the snowmobile.   :o

North central Jersey is supposed to be a disaster, lots of trees down and breaking, power out and likely for a week or more. Friend says makes Hurricane earlier the fall/summer like a small "fart".  Saw several power crews heading East this afternoon on the Pa. Pike.

We have about 9".  Power lines down everywhere.  2/3 state without power say it will be 2 weeks before we get power.  This storm makes Irene a cakewalk!

Scariest part is the number of homeowners who are out cutting down limbs and trees who really have no business using a chainsaw.

I started this post at 9 this morning.  Battery died.  No power so first chance I had to post this.

As soon as I get electricity back I will make a lovely video so you can see how devastating this storm has been.  90% of my town without power.  Gas lines 1/2 mile long and fighting already.  What will it  be  by Wed?

I am so sorry that you are going through all that.  Wet, heavy snow and ice on trees with leaves is a very bad combination.

Our area still has some without power, but not nearly the damage we're seeing further north, in your area.

We got 22", Peru, MA got 32". :o A lot of damage, especially the Norway maples and the Bradford pears due to the leaves being on so many trees still. On the main street in town both sides are lined with large Bradfords. The entire street was littered with major leaders broken off.

They got more the further south you went from here. Our snow never stuck to the road here, but out at work it looks like they plowed, but there was only 2 inches there and mostly melted out today. The bare fields hold the snow a lot longer than vegetated ground. Got to about 46 F here today. Man, that sure is a lot of snow down there for October.  ;D

My white oak, Norway, lilacs and apples still have leaves.

I hate that everyone is having trouble in the North East, but I have a question...would it reduce the cost and loss of electricity if all the lines were underground. It seems to me that every time there is a snow storm in the east, it causes power to go out. I know it may be cheaper to run overhead lines, but in the long run the local areas could save some money.

Just as an FYI, overhead lines down here cost more than underground. When my neighbor ran power to his house, the overhead estimate was $11,000, he ran underground for $3,000.

The lines to my house are underground, but it's poles out on the main road.

Got called out this morning to a local gun club! 1 mile driveway was littered with 13 tree,s down blocking roadway and downed wires. we went loaded for bear and had them chipped, logs loaded and out the driveway as the power company pulled in at 12pm. the director was so happy he issued us all 1 year full memberships as we left 8). we have 4 more that I  have not seen yet. The biggest reason most power companies like over head instead of underground is when there is a problem it is a lot easier to find if it is overhead. Underground takes a lot more time to track down and repairs can be a lot harder to fix.

It would go a long way to plan the placing of the poles along a field instead of a forest edge. Years ago they removed all the cedar poles, well there were along the fields for the most part, where there were fields. The new poles where put into our yard trees and several areas up along the woods since. That is just plain "bonehead".

Pre-commercial thinning pays off. :)

Okay here is a link to my video on the storm damage.  (I know it took a long time)  It really is only a snap shot of the damage.
What I really wanted to show was the power trucks from all over the country that would drive down the roads in groups of 3 or 4.  It was like being in an old war movie when they would show the tanks rolling through the town that they just destroyed.  Those trucks left and were replaced by those tandem brush haulers in my video.  Every town has one or two of those dumping areas.  It is one month after the storm and the brush haulers are still around.
