I'm up to my 6'th YouTube video upload.  I think I'm getting the hang of it and my videos are better.  At least I think so.. 

Since a number of other members are making YouTube videos, I'zz just wondering if there was a way, or would be a way to link a YouTube account to your profile?   

Also, or instead, maybe make a new section on the Forum for videos - each member can start a topic under their user name and post links to their videos?  They and others can post comments, questions, etc.

Seems to me YouTube already groups them together by username, as well at the end of a vid the others under that username show up.
A search on YouTube of the username will bring up a list of the video's they've posted.
Maybe that feature would take care of our needs just fine. IMO

Here's a few tips on making good videos from a former video business owner ;-) Bibbyman asked me to chime in, since there's about as much to know about making good videos as there is to sawing good lumber!

Here's some tips/ideas for beginners:
   -Use a tripod if you can. Steady video is good video!
   -Zoom and pan (move) slower than you think you should. Your audience will thank you ;-)
   -If you do do handheld video, hold the camera steady, relax your body, and only slowly move the camera. Edit out shaky/jerky stuff with your editing software. Bibbyman does a good job of keeping handheld watchable!
   -Upload your video at the highest quality your camera/computer/internet connection can manage. A high quality video is much more enjoyable to watch than a fuzzy one.
   -You can insert photos, narration, music with most free video editors (movie maker, imovie, etc).
   -Go easy on the fancy transitions ;-) A simple cut from shot to shot is the best way to go. A crossfade can be a nice touch. Page turn transitions are sooo '90s... ;-)
   -There are tools that you can turn down the volume of a video, and use music or narration as the principle sound you hear. If your video calls for it, do it! If you use copyprotected music, YouTube can disable the music altogether, or remove your video, so watch out for that.
   -When uploading your video to YouTube, give it a descriptive name, a full description, and put in as many tags as you can think of (tags are words associated with your video, that help people find it when they're searching). Here's some sample tags to help people find your video: custom sawyer sawing logs lumber Warden sawmill Wood-Mizer LT40 Sacramento Amador county, etc (Yes, I just made up a bunch...;-).

There's a few things important to remember when just starting out. If you have any questions, technical or basic, send me a message! I enjoy adding many of your videos to our Sawyer playlist section on our YouTube channel, and good quality videos are always good to add!

Then I get a message from YouTube advising me that I could advertize.  I never thought of that and don't know if I want to.

If you go to youtube, My Account, and then to Settings, you can tell YouTube what notifications to actually send to you (if at all). I like to be notified about new comments, and that's about it.

Yesterday I pulled some video into the Movie Maker editor and played around with fade in, fade out,  added still pictures and music.  I may have learned a few other things I’ve already forgotten.   

About the music,  I found three music files that were samples on the PC.   I’m reluctant to go searching for music to download.  Where is a safe place to start looking?  I see some of the downloads cost money – something I’m opposed to, or maybe not clear if its public domain or not.

I'm still researching this whole video creation thing, but I did do some searching on non-copyrighted music.  Here's one site I found pretty quickly: http://www.danosongs.com.  He's got a bunch of clips in different styles you can use and all he asks in return is a credit in your video. 

I'm sure there's a lot more available out there.  This was the first I found that looked promising.

Putting music on a video is risky unless you use youtube's audio match selections once you uploaded, but that doesn't give you the ability to fade in and out where you want. I've found out the hard way on some of mine, where I thought it was safe to use a tune it was not. If it isn't youtube removes the entire sound track.

About the advertizing.  I'm not doing it but i have a relative that made millions with google ads.  I don't think it is as lucrative anymore but he got in on the ground floor and his website gets billions of page views a month and that is the key. traffic is the key. My son makes websites for fun so he got a google ads account and put some ads on his website.  to try it out i went to the site and clicked on three of his ads.  for those three clicks he got 45 cents. If I was making videos i would try the ads thing.  It is really easy to set up.  The ads will show up on your videos and will be relavent to the words you use in your descriptions and and tag words.  Dont get too excited about making money at it because you won't until you get hundreds of thousands of views. as for music like jeff says don't use it unless you own rights to it.  If you use the itunes music they will place ads on your video.  Your narration is good i would say.  If you get a fiddle and play turkey in the straw i believe you could use it on your video.  I'm not sure but i don't think any one owns the rights to some of those old country songs.  If you get the ads on your videos ( hope you try for the fun of it) don't click on them yourself  THYE WILL GET MAD AND TAKE YOUR ACCOUNT AWAY.  anyway that is all i know about the whole deal.  Jeff must know all bout this stuff too.

Ooops, sorry, I misread this before I wrote that last essay up there.  I thought you meant youtube was asking if you wanted ads placed on your videos.  Well it just so happens you could place ads on other peoples videos with the same program but you have to pay of course.  I'm not sure how helpful it would be for you to advertize on youtube because im not too sure if they can target your ads to just people in your area.  Wouldnt be much good to you paying for advertizing in New Zealand.

Since I have never done the adsense thing I thought I would try and I was succsessful in getting an account today.  I wasnt able to get ads on youtube yet as they decide if your videos are good enough to place ads on.  I got a blog account with google to start my new adventure.  I have photos and videos and ads there if you guys want to see. No.  You were right the first time.  They wanted to know if I wanted to allow ads on my videos.  I never thought about placing our ads on our videos or anyone else's.

My videos have had 2100 views since I put the first one up in early June.  I don’t know if that’s a little or a lot.  Mary ask, “How many of them where you?”.  Well some.  We can get YouTube on the TV through our Roku converter box so I fire new ones up to show her.

Also, I've had some subscribers that look to me like spam so I've knocked them off.  What's up with that?

I added fade to the latest video.  Also had one long sequence of the back of a man talking to the crowd so I just found a good spot and made a snapshot and put a caption. You couldn’t hear what he was saying anyway.

2000+ views isn't bad but if you had ads showing on your videos it wouldn't generate much money.  What seems to generate lots of traffic is the kids getting their girlfriend running around on the beach in her bikini.  they tend to get hundreds of thousands of views in a very short time.  I believe some of those kids make a living from the ads.  Too bad we are so old Bibby, we could have some fun with this.  I don't know any women that should be wearing bikinis any more that could help me cut lumber or Firewood on camera.  Oh well, maybe in my next life

It wasn't my motive in any case to make money off of this.

I do see if I'm going to shot event videos like this I need something like a monopod.   The shots of the people fishing were about a 1/4 mile across the lake.  I cut out a lot of the wobble parts. I shot about 40 minutes and edited it down to something like 7.   I wanted to get a little of each machine and each man talking.  I'll post more on the content of the event in a post I started in the "alternative" section.

Is there a way in the free version of Movie Maker software to keep the audio part of a video but replace the video picture with other video or a picture?  What I'd like to do is shot a video of me telling a whole story and maybe demoing some things but then cutting to video or photos as needed.

Might depend on your version of Movie Maker, but you should be able to drag your video file into the second audio track, which will give you an independent audio version to work with. Then also drag your video into the video track.

If that works, you'll have your video, and then a duplicate of the audio in the second track. Now you can cut up your video file and insert photos and other videos as you please. You will want to mute (right click) the video track that you're cutting up, before you begin editing it, that way all you hear is the secondary, uncut audio track.

Hopefully that works for you?!

I looked on B&N for Movie Maker for Dummies.  I think they wanted something like $220.00 for a copy.  Used ones they want something like $40.00.  Do you know of any other reasonable priced documentation for people starting out?

I’ve been thinking about making some more video’s.  The camera I like to use is a old Fuji FinePix.  It has all the features of a new one along with big buttons.  I also know how to operate it.  The handicap is the small XD memory card.  Figured I could correct that...stopped by Office Max and the salesman told me XD cards are obsolete and discontinued.  I would have to order one...but I looked down and there was one left on the hangar.  In business now with a 2 GB card...I can make a feature length movie.

We do have two newer camera’s with big SD cards but the buttons don’t fit my fingers at all.  They must be making the new camera’s for midgets.

And thanks for the link Mooney...I was wondering how to dub over audio.  I’m not even sure if that is the right term.

Two more YouTube questions:

1)  How do you replace a video that you've uploaded?   

I had one I wanted to make a small change to and did in my Movie Maker project.  I filled over the old project and then generated a new WMV file of the same name I had already uploaded to YouTube.  When I went to upload it,  it just started uploading like it was a new video.  I expected it to ask if I wanted to replace the old one.  I really don't want to delete the old one and upload a new one because I've already put the link here on the Forum.  If I delete the old one, then the link would be no good.

2) I'm having a struggle getting a link from YouTube that will post on the Forum and display.  I go to the "share" option and it puts a link string of text in the text box but there is something odd about that string.   Like this...



I go to "show options" and then check "long link" to get the one that previews on the Forum.

The forum is not coded to use the share link, you need to use the regular page url for the video to embed.

You can not replace a video on youtube. You can only upload a new one and delete the old one. That becomes a problem if you posted the link somewhere because the new video gets a new URL.

Well,  I've spent some time reading and watching the tutorial videos, etc.  And I got back on to Movie maker and tried to do some of the things I saw.  But...  I think my free version of Movie Maker does not have those features.  I can't get to show a separate audio track, for example.  I can't get it to do some of the edit stuff I saw in the instruction videos.  So…   I guess they want me to buy the full feature version of be happy with the simple version.  I think for now I’ll be happy with the free version.

There looks to be two different Windows Movie Makers.  I have one downloaded to a Windows Vista (OS) PC that is “Movie Maker”.  But I can't get it to display the video.  This PC has some screwy things going on.  I think some of the video drivers are missing or not installed right.  

So I downloaded what I thought was Movie Maker on Mary's new PC with Windows 7.  It works and is what I've used to edit the videos that I've uploaded.  The Icon looks the same but the screen format is much different than what's on the Windows Vista PC.   It's Windows "Live" Movie Maker.  It does not have nearly the features as "Movie Maker".   I can't get it to display a timeline or a audio track like I can on the Vista PC (that is not working).

Maybe I need to see if I can get a copy of Windows “Movie Maker” (without the “live” part) on Mary’s PC.

Thanks...  I looked at it.  But I'm real leery about downloading free software from some place not Microsoft.   I did that once with some free CAD software and got plagued with popups and SPAM until I was able to kill it off.  Free always has a price.

I’ll look on the Microsoft download site and see if I can get the non-“live” version.

I saw some movie editing software at Wal-Mart for $49.00.  I can't remember the name.  Are there any other products out there for the home user that someone can recommend?

I've found it to be beneficial several times. It sort of depends on what program you need to get rid of. It's free and won't hurt anything, so use it.

Looks like everywhere I go, nothing is straight forward or simple.   I’ve got the wimpy version “Live” Movie Marker on one PC that works but nearly featureless.   I’ve got a more powerful version “Movie Maker” with more features on a PC that does not work correctly. 

I did some looking and searches and found like DoughinUtah said, how to load Movie Maker for Vista on a PC with Windows 7.  Seems there is a whole bunch of people out there that have some hook or crook way of getting the old Vista version to work on Windows 7.

I don’t know if I want to put old Movie Maker on the Windows 7 PC or not.  Likely it would work or you could get it to work but then what happens when things are updated?  I’ve been down this road before.  Each new system update assumes it knows what software is on the PC.

Maybe I can figure out how come the Movie Maker on Vista does not display the video.  It displays the thumbnail but when you “Play” the movie, the screen stays black.  The time-line indicator is moving so its reading and running – just nothing is showing up in the display window. 

The ACER PC box with Windows Vista has a DVD RW drive.  But DVDs will not play (or at least display).  Other video that come in over the internet;  Netflix, YouTube, etc., display fine.

 I can understand your frustration, Bibby. I played around with the program today and don't know/can't tell which version I have. I download it from www.windows-movie-maker.org. It does have a timeline button and is called version 2.1.4026.0. It is running on Windows 7.

Apparently Movie Maker 6.0 for Vista is the best version.

Why would MS make a dumb down version?  And not have a legitimate and supported way to run the more powerful version?

I have been beating my head against the Window wall for the past couple of days trying to get Movie Maker 6.0 to work on the Windows Vista machine.  I tried a lot of things and none worked.  With all my efforts to avoid it,  I managed to get Driver Detective and Notion Utilities installed while trying to install video monitors drivers from the KDS website.   I had to work to get them uninstalled. 

I even went up to the PC store where we bought the ACER in 2006.  We bought it from a computer store so we would have a chance to get support.  So far every time we’ve asked them for help, they were of no help and made very little effort at being no help.

This evening I was messing around with Movie Maker and by chance pulled in a sample video that came on the PC.  Ah-ha!  It displayed in the display window!  And it played!  What was different from the video I uploaded from my camera?  Turns out the video I shot and uploaded was in MPG format.  The sample video was in WMV format.  So I went back to the Sony software on the PC and there was a convert function.  I converted the MPG to WMV and now Movie Maker work – at least so far in this test.

I made the above video for the Wood-Mizer blades contest.  It was just to be a practice video to fiddle around with Movie Maker 6.0.  I was just in my old work bibs. But after I got it edited and added some titles and such,  I thought it not too bad.  It has a “rough hewn” look to it.  So I may just submit it rather than make another.

But here is my problem..  It was shot in wide screen format,  edited in Movie Maker as wide screen, and published into a video in wide screen.  But the first time I uploaded it to YouTube,  it was not wide screen.  The screen was wide but the picture was “squozed” in with back filler on each side.  While it made me look thin,  I didn’t like it and it looked distorted.  So I deleted that version and went back to Movie Maker and generated another in some other video format.  That too looked good on the PC, but again was “smushed” on YouTube.  So…  Third time is a charm.  I deleted the second try and went back and publish it in HD wide screen.  This time it looks like what I recorded.  But the file is pretty big.

If some of you guys can stand to look and hear me for 4-5 minutes, please watch it and tell me if it loads OK (not too slow) and displays right on whatever you’re watching it on.

It loads and looks fine, Bibby.  In fact, it looks really good.  I like the dog wandering into the picture and laying down. 

When watching it, folks have the choice of quality they want to watch it in.  360p, 480p, or the 720p HD.  Obviously, the higher definition you choose, the longer the vid will take to load.

Also, if you click the link and watch the video non-embedded, you can choose 240p and then it loads really fast.

Yea,  I do my worst job at the end..  I had it looking good in the edit and then in the first couple of uploads it only flashed past.  So when I went back to the project,  I stretched it out some.  I guess too much.  If I redo it,  I'll shorten that up a bunch.  Or maybe put in a few more pictures?

I’m tempted to load the raw video up on Mary’s Windows 7 PC with “Live” Movie Maker.  That is what I used on the first bunch of videos and they uploaded widescreen and small file size just fine.  I’ve got Movie Maker 6.0 up and working on the Vista PC but this video didn’t really need any of the features.

I am a big fan of your vids.  They keep getting better.  I only have a 2 megabit connection and it loaded faster than it played in 720P.  Usually it doesnt load that fast in that high resolution but probably did for this video because the cam was stationary and there wasnt too much fast motion happening

Now that I have a new Fujifilm video/photo camera I have to find something to do.  Well, of course it has to rain now for 2 days. I like the camera so far though, took some video of some dairy cows about 3/4 mile away at 168x zoom.

Then I was starting into the woodlot and the rain drops started, so that means the woods are wet now. 

I've had a Youtube account for some time. I guess I have some shop videos to work on this winter to.

I have version 2.1 of Movie Maker here for XP. I have used it a small amount. It has several lines on a story board type screen: one for video, transitions, audio, and back ground music. All you do is drag and drop. You can mask out sections of video or music by using the clipping tool. It does not alter the original source files. Pretty easy stuff, maybe a bit frustrating at times. I think I prefer Nero Vision, which is not free, but has more options. I also have a free video converter called Clone2Go that converts files to about any format you want. I'm not much of a software tutorialist, plus dial-up pretty much puts the crimp on that idea. Any Youtubes I've uploaded were an "overnight upload as you sleep" deal.
