Your, you are, you're

I see this misuse getting pretty bad these days in our world.

The word you’re is a contraction for the words you are.

The word your is a word to describe something that belongs to you.

Your is not a substitute for you are and you're, or vise versa.

Words have meanings. Just saying...

Okay, the subject is wrong.

I know the differences but, I swear, sometimes I think my fingers aren't attached to my brain and I'm thinking way ahead of what I type. There's been a many a time when I used the modify button to go back and correct an embarrassing misspelling that I never should have let go through. Some of the problems are transposition. I'm on the verge of blaming the computer.

witch/which
pitcher/picture
latter/ladder

Alot may be in the dictionary, but it is slang, just like other slang words are in some dictionaries..

About 35 years ago I was driving through a major city in Ontario and found myself behind a delivery truck that was operated by the region's biggest appliance distributer. There was a sign written on the back of the truck in very, very large letters:

"Your following a leader."

Obviously I wasn't following a speller

After working in different areas and trying to speak and write various languages I don´t have the nerve to criticize any ones spelling or speaking ability. I have made a fool of myself many times and still prefer to have someone proof read my letters in other languages or for that matter English. When you drop into a new language area you understand how difficult life must be for people who have never been to school.

I have seen a barrel sawed diagonally and the half with the bottom end used as a wheelbarrow. I guess that was really a wheelbarrel.

Up here, it's a spicket or spigot, and wheelbarrel is what it's usually called, although I've seen it the other way, too.

i probably miss spell half the words i type on here. i went to college for 2 years and passed most of my classes but it may not have been as good of a college as you-uns went to.

Affect/effect

This is a difficult one for many.
Something affected you. You are affected.
Something had an effect. You feel the effect.

Oh, and orientated is not a word. It's oriented. I ran across this in the design world all the time.

Down here, almost everybody pronounces spigot as spicket, and I'm sure there are lots of places where wheelbarrow is pronounced wheelbarrel, but that doesn't change the fact that there is no such thing as a spicket or a wheelbarrel (well, except for maybe the wheelbarrel that Magicman describes

).

Another one that bugs me: Irregardless is not a word. Irrespective and regardless are.

A few years back the local paper ran an article on a new subdivision that was being developed. The article mentioned the equipment that was building the roads -- an excavator and a "grater". OK, thinks I, probably just a typo the proof-reader missed. Turn the page and there is a photo, complete with caption, of the "grater" at work.

When I was a Junior in high school, my favorite word seemed to be ifin...ex. Ifin we hurry we can go fishing. My english teacher signed my yearbook ....To Ifin....I have not used it much since, guess it was no fun with her not there to get on to me about it..Tim
