Information on old Koehrings
« on: May 29, 2011, 05:42:29 pm »
I was wondering if anyone can help me, I have been looking for some information on some dinosaurs. I know there were some out east and was wondering if anyone here had some info on Koehring Forestry equipment. I know that there were a number of adaptations to mount various  items on the large chassis delimbers, forwarding bunks, buncher and loader mounts and the like. the shortwood harvester actually had all of them!
I have been trying to find info online and have had little sucess. I have found little more than a few bad pics. I have compiled them all on my flikr page --Photos MUST be in the Forestry Forum gallery!!!!!--/photos/jr-transport/ I have found afew folks who are interested, but like me, have had little success researching.
Here are a few pics so you know what I'm talking about.

Have a search in old FERIC reports that may be available at the U of T. They have an online website, but I think it's by subscription. The woods around here used to be full of that iron in the 1970's-80's, one forwarder is sitting at the Lumberman's Museum in Boistown, NB. The feller forwarder used to be quite the thing to see fully loaded with whole tree hardwood. They used to debark it roadside and chip in all into vans.

Here's the name of one paper.

The Koehring Feller - Forwarder : 6 months of data collection from two softwood operations : supplement to FERIC technical report TR - 7 12 pages (1977).

Technical note / Forest Engineering Research Institute of Canada (ISSN 0381-7741 ; no. TN-15)

Do a site search on their site. http://www.feric.ca

cool seeing that shortwood harvester photo...brings back memories of when I first saw them working while on a field trip to Great Lakes camp 517 when i was in public school...I thought they were awesome!...also recall my dad not sharing my enthusiasm....something about having to fix one in a swarm of black flies after wading out to get to it in a lake....blah blah...something like that...

The shortwood harvester looks cool.. but it also has that look of "we have extra parts where can we stick them"

I'd love the FERIC reports, but it wont let me subscribe, something about not liking my free email account. prices seem a bit steep- 40 bucks for a report? rediculous!

those are some interesting machines.   was the shortwood thing a single operator, or double like some of the old hahn processors?    seems like a clumsy thing for one guy to run.

Yes, rediculous. That is why I suggest the library to. There probably is very little information anywhere else. This was a time when forwarders and processors were being developed. I remember at least one forest company investing heavily into their development here and they worked with FERIC and the university of NB. FERIC is a research group, so it's not going to let those reports go for cheap I suspect. ;)

Hello Everybody!

sorry for dragging up this old thread, If anybody is still interested in these machines, I have managed to find some more information and even a little bit of video on them.

A fella in the maritimes has posted some vids of his feller forwarder at work on youtube. really quite interesting stuff!do a search for koehring K3FF on youtube and you will find it.

Also, not to seem like i am spamming here, but I have added many photos and brochures to my personal koehring page; if anybody here is interested shoot me an email jr-transport@hotmail dot com

Also, I have not, for some reason, had any luck contacting FERIC (now FPInnovations) about this matter, and the local libraries have been similarly unhelpful.

According to their website you have to be a member or your out of luck. Call themselves a private company, but they would not exist without government $$.

Probably a delimber in its original config.
Also has a complete conversion to CAT3306T and CAT valve gear from a 235 excavator.

You Have that picture of the koehring 220 I took in Chester Maine. If I remember right the 220's always had a disk head instead of a tree shear and ran an 18'' to a 22'' head. If I look around on my computer i may be able to find a picture of that machine's 18 or 20'' head and more
